Para su tercera generación, los productos hechos por Volkswagen experimentaron más que una evolución, una revolución en términos del diseño exterior principalmente, una revolución que se convirtió en tendencia principal para básicamente cualquier producto desarrollado durante la década de los 80s... 

No obstante, cuanto más revisito estas décadas del pasado reciente, más entiendo que no puedes trazar una división clara entre cada década, sin incurrir en una serie de inconsistencias con respecto a la transformación de la cultura popular en todos sus intrincados aspectos... 

Quiero decir, la mayoría de personas tienden en estar de acuerdo con que el rasgo principal de los 80s es la "silueta encajada" y yo tenía la misma idea hasta hace poco, este era un rasgo que podías ver en artefactos mundanos como una "boombox" (radiograbadora, un dispositivo muy popular de una "era pretérita") o un auto o una película de ciencia ficción. 

Pero esta "silueta encajada" no vino simplemente de la nada, fue en efecto la continuación "natural" o evolución si quieres, de la silueta de cuña desarrollada durante los 70s como uno de los rasgos más influyentes en el diseño de dicha época. 

Mi invitada para esta publicación es uno de los muchos ejemplos de la superposición en términos de diseño y tendencias culturales entre décadas: la Volkswagen Transporter (T3) T25 Doble Cabina (Doppelkabine) Pickup de 1980 - 1990, una Camioneta Pickup Compacta 4 Puertas para Trabajo Liviano Clase 1. 

La T3, la cual es la designación para la tercera generación de la Tipo 2 - Transporter fue lanzada en 1979, pero desarrollada probablemente durante el segundo lustro de los 70s y tiene la típica silueta encajada de los 80s, inspirada por el diseño del Golf, que fue un trabajo de Giorgetto Giugiaro. 

De alguna manera el estilismo de la T3, que fue ofrecida como van panel, van de pasajeros (también conocida como Caravelle, Microbus o Vanagon), camper / Westfalia, pickup cabina sencilla y cabina doble (doka), luce actual después de todos estos años y eso es lo que esperas de un buen diseño, algún sentido de atemporalidad. 

Me gustan estos vehículos de silueta encajada, ahora más aún que entiendo un poquitín más el trasfondo de este concepto, pero hubo un tiempo cuando las curvas fueron para mí la única expresión de buen diseño: supongo que evolucionamos a través del conocimiento... 

Es un modelo que difícilmente ves en mi país o en mi ciudad natal, de hecho, es relativamente más fácil encontrar unos pocos ejemplos de la Tipo de 2 de generaciones anteriores (T1 or T2), pero al menos tienes la opción de conseguir un carrito de juguete basado en la T3 y eso es lo que todavía encuentro interesante sobre Matchbox y Hot Wheels... 

Este en un vehículo de juguete bonito, eso no es algo que diga a menudo acerca de productos recientes de Matchbox o de Hot Wheels para ese caso (las diferencias entre estas dos marcas son tan aparentes hoy en día, que llega a ser inútil o sin sentido hacer una distinción entre ellas). 

Hay una buena cantidad de detalle y me gusta la idea, que fue propuesta probablemente por el diseñador a cargo (de cuya identidad no encontré información), de crear dos versiones para el platón: una "limpia" y otra con algunos accesorios, una característica extra que es ofrecida en algunas pickups. 

Conseguí este modelo en el mercado primario, a través de una tienda de cadena local, hace más o menos 4 años; este es el debút de la Volkswagen Transporter Cab, en la Serie MBX Explorers de 2016, parte de la Línea Principal (categoría Regular); ha tenido al menos 8 iteraciones (incluida 1 promocional con ruedas Real Riders, sí, un diseño usado también para Hot Wheels y el cual ni siquiera ofrecía chasis en diecast, solo en caso que todavia pienses que Matchbox se está poniendo "mejor" con el tiempo). 

Esta Transporter ofrece carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico plateado, que luce muy soso comparado con un acabado cromado apropiado, sin embargo, en 2017 el modelo fue modificado para ofrecer chasis en diecast y carrocería plástica: el producto fue arruinado efectivamente. 

El trabajo de pintura fue hecho en un gris azulado que es apropiado para un vehículo de esa era, complementado por tampos sobre los paneles laterales, en gris medio, azul, rojo y blanco, con un diseño muy pulcro, pero preferiría tampos para los faros, luces de cola y parrillas frontales en su lugar, así que decidí añadir detalles con pintura para esos puntos y el modelo luce mucho mejor; tiene ventanas ahumadas e interiores grises, las ruedas plásticas presentan diseño de rimes Small 6 Spoke Sport Utility con acabado cromado oscuro, una elección muy adecuada y fue hecha en Tailandia...

For their third generation, the products made by Volkswagen underwent more than evolution, a revolution in terms of exterior design mainly, a revolution that became mainstream for basically any product developed during the 80’s decade... 

Nonetheless, the more I revisit these decades from the recent past, the more I understand that you cannot trace a clear division line between each decade, without incurring in a series of inconsistencies regarding the transformation of popular culture in all its intricate aspects... 

I mean, most people tend to agree that the main trait of the 80s is the "boxy shape" and I had the same idea until not long ago, this was a trait you could see in mundane artifacts like a "boombox" (radiorecorder, a very popular device from a "bygone era") or a car or a science fiction movie. 

But this "boxy shape" just didn’t come out of nowhere, it was indeed the "natural" continuation or evolution if you will, of the wedge shape developed during the 70s as one of the most influential traits in design of such decade. 

My guest for this publication is one of the many examples of overlapping in terms of design and cultural trends between decades: the 1980 - 1990 Volkswagen Transporter (T3) T25 Double Cab (Doppelkabine) Pickup, a Compact 4-Door Light Duty Class 1 Pickup Truck. 

The T3, which is the designation for the third generation of the Type 2 - Transporter was released in 1979, but developed probably during the second half of the 70s and it has the typical boxy shape of the 80s, inspired by the design of the Golf, that was a work by Giorgetto Giugiaro. 

Somehow the styling of the T3, that was offered as panel van, passengers van (also known as Caravelle, Microbus or Vanagon), camper / Westfalia, single cab and double cab (doka) pickup, looks current after all these years and that’s what you expect from a good design, some sense of timelessness. 

I like these boxy shape vehicles, even more now that I understand a bit more the background of this concept, but there was a time when curves were for me the only expression of good design: I guess we evolve through knowledge... 

It’s a model you hardly see in my country or my hometown, in fact, it’s relatively easier to find a few examples of Type 2 from previous generations (T1 or T2), but at least you have the option to get a toy car based on the T3 and that’s what I still find interesting about Matchbox and Hot Wheels... 

This is a nice toy vehicle, that’s not something I say often about recent products by Matchbox or by Hot Wheels for that case (the differences between these two brands are so apparent nowadays, that it becomes useless or senseless to make a distinction between them). 

There is a good deal of detail and I like the idea, that was proposed probably by the designer in charge (of whose identity I found no information about), of creating two versions for the bed: one "clean" and one with some accessories, an extra feature that is offered in some pickups. 

I got this model in the primary market, through a local chain retail store, pretty much 4 years ago; this is the debut of the Volkswagen Transporter Cab, in the 2016 MBX Explorers Series, part of the Mainline (Regular category); it has had at least 8 iterations (including 1 promotional with Real Riders wheels, yeah, a design also used for Hot Wheels and which didn’t even offer diecast chassis, just in case you still think that Matchbox is getting "better" over time). 

This Transporter offers diecast body and silver plastic chassis, that looks very dull compared with a proper chrome finishing, however, in 2017 the model was modified to offer diecast chassis and plastic body: the product was effectively ruined. 

The paint job was made in a bluish gray that is proper for a vehicle of that era, complemented by tampos on the side panels, in medium gray, blue, red and white, with a very neat design, but I would prefer tampos for the head, tail lights and front grilles instead, so I decided to add details with paint for those points and the model looks way better; it has smoked windows and gray interiors, the plastic wheels feature Small 6 Spoke Sport Utility rims design with dark chrome finishing, a very suitable choice and it was made in Thailand...
