1931 Ford Model A Woody Station Wagon - Full Size 4-Door Station / Estate Wagon Woody 2003 Surf Rods Series 5/12 Diecast Scale 1:63 by Johnny Lightning

Durante las primeras décadas del siglo pasado, cuando la línea de montaje de producción estaba comenzando a convertirse en el estándar de la industria automotriz a nivel mundial, pero mucho antes que la automatización y robotización reemplazara a la mayoría de la mano de obra humana en la producción masiva de estos bienes, los autos eran hechos de forma muy diferente... 

Esos fueron tiempos, previos a la II Guerra Mundial, cuando los fabricantes de coches de lujo superior estaban en auge alrededor del mundo, sus productos eran hechos sin escatimar en toda clase de artesanía y llevaron el concepto de vehículos a medida a los más altos niveles jamás alcanzados... 

Si bien los carros para la clase media creados en esa época no ofrecieron semejantes excentricidades en términos de lujo y confort, porque fueron medios de movilidad personal asequibles, sin pretensiones excesivas, estos vehículos relativamente modestos tenían una cantidad importante de mano de obra humana involucrada en su fabricación y este hecho les da un estatus especial... 

Eso es particularmente verdad con la tipología de vehículos representada por mi invitada para esta publicación: la Ford Modelo A Vagoneta Familiar Woody de 1931, una Vagoneta Familiar Woody de Tamaño Completo 4 Puertas, simplemente porque las vagonetas familiares y más específicamente las woodies requirían mucha artesanía. 

El Ford Modelo A fue el segundo desarrollo de la marca del óvalo azul y por lejos el más exitoso en ventas jamás construido por este fabricante, una hazaña que es incluso mayor cuando consideras que Ford logró estas ventas récord durante el comienzo de la Gran Depresión: la crisis económica más grande hasta ahora, maquinada con el fin de generar el escenario propicio para la II Guerra Mundial... 

Prácticamente 35 configuraciones / estilos de carrocería fueron ofrecidos para este modelo, lo cual habla acerca de su versatilidad sobresaliente, de esas 35 configuraciones / estilos de carrocería, la vagoneta familiar woody fue la segunda más cara y no es de extrañar, no solo porque la carpintería es compleja y costosa, aún teniendo en mente que Ford producía sus propias carrocerías de madera, sino también porque solo 12.000 unidades de esta tipología fueron construidas en alrededor de 3 años de producción. 

Las Vagonetas Famililares Woodies fueron raras entonces y son aún más raras hoy en día, porque obviamente las carrocerías de madera son mucho más vulnerables al deterioro en un poco más de 90 años desde su lanzamiento original y en consecuencia, es realmente difícil hallar cualquiera en buena condición, ni hablar de pristina, así que se volvieron coleccionables muy buscados. 

Pero más que eso, son vehículos hermosos que nos recuerdan el enorme encanto de los productos artesanales: me encantan esa clase de cosas, ¡tenlo por seguro!... 

Cuando visitas tiendas de juguetes / coleccionables buscando algo muy específico como coleccionista adulto, esto es más o menos como una visita guiada a un sitio turístico, siguiendo un itinerario o un libreto si quieres, usando una analogía del mundo cinematográfico, quiero decir, si bien esta experiencia no está desprovista de "emociones", algunas veces se siente como un "proceso mecánico"... 

Probablemente porque hay una especie de "presión" por conseguir ese artículo particular y "no tienes ojos" para nada más así que, si luego de tu jornada no lo encontraste, al principio piensas que fue solo un desperdicio de tiempo, pero ese no es necesariamente el caso y aprendes a lidiar con esto de una forma constructiva, desde luego, una vez que "maduras" como coleccionista... 

Algunas veces no obstante, te permites visitar una tienda de juguetes / coleccionables sin "itinerario o libreto", sin expectativas, te permites sorprenderte y pienso que es una experiencia muy recompensadora, muy a menudo incluso más que encontrar algo específico que estabas buscando, es un "proceso orgánico"... 

Y ese fue el caso con mi invitada para esta reseña, porque no la estaba buscando, quiero decir, ni siquiera sabía que Johnny Lightning tenía este precioso modelo a escala en su catálogo, ni hablar de con el tratamiento de "auto de surfear" que recibió y la calidad que esperas de una marca de la categoría Premium. 

La conseguí a través del mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador / vendedor privado, cuando estaba visitando su tienda, aquí en mi ciudad natal; simplemente la encontré, no fue planeado, la revisé cuidadosamente y decidí que era tiempo de traerla a mi mini-garaje. 

Esos son los privilegios de visitar una tienda de juguetes / coleccionables en persona, algo que se está volviendo más difícil en una era cuando participar en eventos presenciales está siendo vetado, por causa de un virus, sabes, como si los virus y bacterias, algunos de ellos muy letales, no fueran parte de nuestra realidad desde que la humanidad existe en esta tierra y ellos siempre estarán allí, no van a ir a ningún otro lado... 

Quiero decir, la enfermedad, los patógenos y la muerte han sido parte de nuestra vida desde tiempos inmemoriales, con todo hoy en día el miedo a la muerte, a los patógenos, a la enfermedad y en realidad el miedo a vivir, en un sentido amplio, ha sido implantado en la psique de las personas, forzándolas a pensar que siguiendo ciertos protocolos o dejando de vivir como lo habían hecho hasta ahora, con todos esos males a su alrededor, pudieran hacer que desaparecieran, ¿en serio?... 

Esa es una manera de pensar supersticiosa, un comportamiento irracional, con todo muchas personas optaron por creer que la situación actual a nivel mundial es acerca de una crisis sanitaria y no un ejercicio de propaganda, distracción y control a escala global, el más grande hasta ahora, lo cual me hace pensar en cuán fácilmente se puede manipular a un amplio sector de la población, ese no es un buen augurio... 

Mi invitada pertenece a la Serie Surf Rods de 2003, consistente en 12 modelos con una selección muy variada que incluye mayormente vanes y vagonetas, las cuales son  muy apropiadas para esta clase de vehículos temáticos; venía dentro de una tarjeta grande y gruesa, impresa a todo color (el estándar con Johnny Lightning, sin cargo extra, a diferencia del caso con Hot Wheels o Matchbox, que cobran más por ese tipo de cosas, a propósito) y es otro de los varios modelos que no han sido lanzados de nuevo, en la actual era Round 2... 

El modelo de JL ofrece construcción completa en diecast, incluyendo la sección de los guardafangos (Johnny Lightning no es mezquina en absoluto); el trabajo de pintura es muy prolijo, presentando naranja con acabado brillante para la carrocería, negro con acabado satinado para el techo y los guadafangos y marrón claro para simular los paneles de madera de la carrocería. 

Es complementado por una decoración hotrodesca con tampos y/o calcomanías, presentando llamas de pinza de cangrejo, en blanco con contorno verde claro y un texto "goleta cruisers" en la parte de atrás, el resultado es bastante delicado y realista, me encanta esa clase de detalles en un modelo como este, es un diseño de muy buen gusto. 

El motor expuesto así como la parrilla frontal y el radiador son insertos plásticos, presentando acabado cromado y acabado plateado para el supercargador con inductor de aire, hay otro inserto plástico para el parabrisas, el resto de la carrocería carece de las ventanas cubiertas, justo como el coche real. 

Los interiores muy bien detallados fueron trabajados en negro y hay un par de tablas de surf vintage con aletas fijadas en la parte de atrás, decoradas en la parte superior; las ruedas son multiparte presentando diseño de rimes Cragar 5 Spokes en negro y llantas de plástico lisas, más grandes atrás para realzar el estilo Hot Rod, una tarjeta de colección cuadrada pequeña impresa al frente fue incluida como bonus y fue hecha en China...

During the first decades of the last century, when the assembly line of production was starting to become the standard in the automotive industry worldwide, but way before the automation and robotization replaced most of the human labor in mass production of these goods, cars were made very differently... 

Those were the times, previous to the World War II, when manufacturers of top luxury were booming around the world, their products were made without skimping on all kind of craftmanship and took the concept of tailored vehicles to the highest levels ever achieved... 

While cars for the middle class created at that time didn’t offer such eccentricities in terms of luxury and comfort, because they were affordable means for personal mobility, without excessive pretentions, these relatively modest vehicles had an important amount of human labor involved in their manufacturing and this fact gives them a special status... 

That’s particularly true with the typology of vehicles represented by my guest for this publication: the 1931 Ford Model A Woody Station Wagon, a Full Size 4-Door Station / Estate Wagon Woody, just because station wagons and more specifically the woodies required a lot of craftmanship. 

The Ford Model A was the second development of the brand of the blue oval and by far the most successful in sales ever built by this manufacturer, a feat that is even greater when you consider that Ford achieved these record sales during the onset of the Great Depression: the biggest economic crisis until now, schemed in order to generate the auspicious scenario for the World War II... 

Virtually 35 body configurations / styles were offered for this model, which speaks about its outstanding versatility, of these 35 body configurations / styles, the station wagon woody was the second most expensive and it’s no wonder, not only because the woodwork is complex and costly, even bearing in mind that Ford produced its own wood bodies, but also because only 12,000 units of this typology were built in around 3 years of production. 

Station Wagon Woodies were rare then and they are even rarer nowadays, because obviously wood bodies are way more vulnerable to deterioration in a little more than 90 years since their original release and accordingly it’s really hard to find any in good condition, let alone pristine, so they became sought after collectibles. 

But more than that, they are beautiful vehicles that remind us the huge charm of handcrafted products: I love that kind of things, that’s for sure!... 

When you visit toys / collectibles stores looking for something very specific as adult collector, it’s pretty much like a guided tour to a touristic place, following an itinerary or a script if you will, using an analogy from the cinematic world, I mean, while this experience is not devoid of "thrills", sometimes it feels like a "mechanic process"... 

Probably because there is a sort of "pressure" to get that particular item and "you don’t have eyes" for anything else so, if after your journey you didn’t find it, at first you think that it was just a waste of time, but that’s not necessarily the case and you learn to deal with it in a constructive way, of course, once you "mature" as a collector... 

Sometimes nonetheless, you let yourself visiting a toys / collectibles store without "itinerary or script", without expectations, you allow yourself to be surprised and I think that’s a very rewarding experience, very often even more than finding something specific you were looking for, it’s an "organic process"... 

And that was the case with my guest for this review, because I was not looking for it, I mean, I didn’t even know that Johnny Lightning had this precious scale model in its catalog, let alone with the "surf ride" treatment it received and the quality you expect from a brand from the Premium category. 

I got it through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, when I was visiting his store, here in my hometown; I just found it, it was not planned, I checked it carefully and I decided it was time to bring it to my mini-garage. 

Those are the privileges of visiting a toys / collectibles store in person, something that is becoming more difficult in an era when participating in face-to-face events is being banned, because of a virus, you know, as if viruses and bacteria, some of them very lethal, were not part of our reality since humankind exists on this earth and they will always be there, they won’t go anywhere else. 

I mean, illness, pathogens and death have been part of our life since time immemorial, yet nowadays fear of death, of pathogens, of illness and actually fear of living, in a wide sense, has been implanted in the psyche of people, forcing them to think that following certain protocols or stopping to live as they have done until now, with all those evils around them, somehow they could make them disappear, really?... 

That’s a superstitious way of thinking, an irrational behavior, yet many people chose to believe that the current situation worldwide is about a health crisis and not an exercise of propaganda, distraction and control at a global scale, the largest until now, which makes me think about how easily can be manipulated a large sector of the population, that’s not a good omen... 

My guest belongs to the 2003 Surf Rods Series, consisting of 12 models with a very varied selection that includes mostly vans and wagons, which is very appropriate for this kind of themed vehicles; it came inside a big and thick card, printed in full color (the standard with Johnny Lightning, with no extra charge, unlike the case with Hot Wheels or Matchbox, which do charge more for that kind of things, by the way) and it’s another of the several models that have not been released again so far, in the current Round 2 era... 

The model by JL offers full diecast construction, including the fenders section (Johnny Lightning is not petty-minded at all); the paint job is very prolix, featuring orange with glossy finishing for the body, black with satin finishing for the roof and the fenders and light brown to simulate the wood panels of the body. 

It’s complemented by a hotrodesque decoration with tampos and/or decals, featuring crab claw flames, in white with light green outline and a "goleta cruisers" wording in the back, the result is quite delicate and realistic, I love this kind of details in a model like this, it’s a very tasteful design. 

The exposed engine as well as the front grille and radiator are plastic inserts, featuring chrome finishing and silver finishing for the supercharger with blower, there is another plastic insert for the windshield, the rest of the body lacks of covered windows, just like the actual vehicle. 

The very well detailed interiors were worked in black and there is a pair of vintage surf boards with fins fixed at the rear, decorated on top; the wheels are multipart featuring Cragar 5 Spokes rims design in black and slick plastic tires, bigger at the rear to enhance the Hot Rod style, a small square trading card printed in front was included as a bonus and it was made in China...
