Esta gente reclama que de alguna forma los VDUs han estado invadiendo gradualmente el nicho de otras tipologías de vehículos, como sedanes, vagonetas familiares, vanes / minivanes e incluso hatchbacks 4 puertas, poniendo su continuidad en el mercado en riesgo...
De acuerdo con ellos también, en el proceso de "canibalizar" estos nichos de mercado ya mencionados, los VDUs han influenciado de una forma "negativa" el estilo general de estas tipologías de vehículos, distorsionando sus proporciones y diseño particulares, haciéndolos visualmente poco atractivos...
En otras palabras, estas personas están culpando a los VDUs de la extinción de los sedanes, vagonetas familiares, vanes y hatchbacks en el futuro cercano, un planteamiento que desconoce no solo las dinámicas del mercado automotor, sino también la contribución de los Vehículos Deportivo-Utilitarios a la industria automotriz en conjunto, algo que aparentemente permanece oculto para algunos "expertos"...
Ya que me cuido menos la opinión de "gurús automotrices" y más del mundo automotor en sí, encuentro que los VDUs son una especie de evolución "natural" de otras tipologías de vehículos que los precedieron y he mencionado precisamente dos de esas tipologías: sedanes y vagonetas familiares.
Pero los Vehículos Deportivo-Utilitarios son más que solo una mezcla de tipologías o un "Frankestein automotriz" y en realidad ofrecen varias características distintivas, innovadoras.
Hoy estoy introduciendo un vehículo de esta tipología pobremente entendida algunas veces, que está y estuvo adelantado a su tiempo, además fue revivido este mismo año, como modelo de 2022, mis invitados para esta publicación están basados en el mismo vehículo: la Jeep Wagoneer SJ 4WD de 1981, una Vagoneta de Tamaño Completo / Grande VDU 5 Puertas De Lujo, que para esta publicación es representada en dos niveles de acabados, algo similar al Custom y una reproducción precisa del Limited.
Cuando la Wagoneer fue lanzada a finales de 1962, como un modelo de 1963, no había nada parecido en el mercado, de hecho el Departamento de Mercadeo en Kaiser Jeep (los dueños de la marca en ese momento), tuvieron problemas tratando de clasificar este desarrollo, porque no era una vagoneta familiar, tampoco un camión utilitario con más ventanas, quiero decir, la Chevrolet Suburban, un vehículo "en la misma categoría", estaba lejos de ser similar a este modelo de Jeep.
Supongo que eso era lo que el diseñador industrial Brooks Stevens tenía en mente cuando desarrolló este concepto para una marca que necesitaba, diría desesperadamente, algo fresco para competir con los tres fabricantes más grandes en los EE.UU.A., y él lo hizo absolutamente, con un producto que creó un segmento completamente nuevo: los Vehículos Deportivo-Utilitarios 4x4 De Lujo, que precede al menos por 6 años cualquier otro intento de otras marcas para crear algo en la misma liga (te estoy mirando Range Rover)...
La Wagoneer ofrecía un diseño cincelado, que tuvo su origen en vehículos utilitarios, industriales, quizás un poco toscos y no obstante, luce elegante, atemporal, con proporciones más pequeñas que otras vagonetas de tamaño completo, pero complementada por toques lujosos dentro y fuera, la conveniencia de dirección asistida, frenos asistidos, transmisión automática y 4x4 total, para capacidades apropiadas dentro y fuera de la carretera.
Además, ofrecía muchas otras características por defecto, de acuerdo con el nivel de acabado, por supuesto, como: tapicería en cuero, asientos de cubo, paneles de fibra de madera simulada, molduras cromadas, rimes de aluminio forjado: la clase de cosas que esperas en un sedán de lujo norteamericano, puestas en una vagoneta...
El modelo que estoy presentando en esta reseña fue lanzado por la época cuando Johnny Lightning ya era parte de los activos de (Takara) Tomy y muestra claramente toda la calidad y potencial que este fabricante de diecast Premium tenía en ese momento, potencial que fue desperdiciado por un fabricante japonés de juguetes y coleccionables, que no tenía una idea sensata acerca de qué hacer con una marca que puede estar a la par con su línea de diecast Premium Tomica Limited Vintage / Neo...
Una de las ideas planteadas por la administración de (Takara) Tomy, que no fue precisamente una decisión acertada, fue la introducción de chasis plásticos y en algunos casos, también ruedas plásticas para una línea básica lanzada en 2012, incluyendo varias series, aparentemente en un esfuerzo para recortar costos y "popularizar" esta marca en diferentes nichos de mercado, ignorando el hecho que JL estaba ya bien posicionada como una marca Premium de modelos a escala en diecast.
El resultado de esta estrategia te hace pensar si hubo otra motivación, como, por ejemplo, sacar a un competidor del camino, simplemente porque 1 año más tarde, Johnny Lightning estaba por fuera del negocio...
Esta estrategia (la creación de una línea económica) ha sido implementada por otros fabricantes de coleccionables, como GreenLight, con su línea Motor World y Auto World con una línea básica ofreciendo chasis y ruedas plásticos; algunas personas dirían que la línea Auto-Drivers de M2 Machines es una iniciativa similar, pero con un perfil mejorado y dado que la única diferencia con sus líneas tope es la carencia de características de apertura, no está en la misma "liga" en realidad...
Lo que he observado es que esta clase de estrategia solo funciona en el corto plazo, porque una vez que una marca ha establecido una reputación sólida en el mercado, con un cierto perfil, estas líneas económicas obstaculizan más que ayudar dicha reputación y deben ser descartadas en algún punto, a menos que sean mejoradas...
Afortunadamente con el sublicenciamiento de Johnny Lightning a Thomas Lowe y Round 2, esta y otras malas decisiones fueron revertidas y la Jeep Wagoneer de 1981 recibió todo el amor que merecía; tuve la oportunidad de conseguir tanto el lanzamiento inicial de Tomy como el primer lanzamiento de Round 2, obviamente a través del mercado secundario, con ayuda de un par de amigos míos, colegas coleccionistas e importadores / vendedores privados, hace más o menos 9 y 5 años respectivamente.
Este par de VDUs de Tamaño Completo pertenecen a la Serie Johnny Lightning (Regular) de 2012 Lanzamiento 27 y a la Serie Classic Gold Collection de 2016 Lanzamiento 1 respectivamente; el modelo ha sido usado varias veces por Round 2, con diferentes esquemas de pintura y diseños de ruedas, con o sin remolque y eso es fabuloso, porque es un molde estupendo.
La primera tiene carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico negro, la segunda tiene construcción completa en diecast, las proporciones son acertadas y con Johnny Lightning esa no es una declaración falsa, además el nivel de detalle, así como el realismo y acabados están a la par con la mayoría de productos de marcas reputadas en el segmento Premium.
Los trabajos de pintura fueron hechos en beige claro / blanquecino y Vintage Red Metallic (un color de fábrica), con excelente calidad y están complementados por tampos y/o calcomanías completos, en el segundo ejemplo los paneles de fibra de madera laterales y de la portezuela de cola están reproducidos con precisión y lucen fantásticos.
Los interiores fueron trabajados en nuez moscada para ambas muestras, otra opción de fábrica en la Wagoneer real, mientras que las ventanas son transparentes.
Este modelo ofrece apertura de capó con bahía de motor detallada y pintada, pero también apertura de portezuela de cola, que incluye un inserto plástico, además un portaequipaje de techo, todas estas características realzan el realismo y la apariencia general bastante.
Ambas muestras ofrecen ruedas multiparte, pero la primera presenta diseño de rimes Steelies 4 Slots beige claro / blanquecino, tapacubos "platón de perro" y llantas en caucho sintético labradas, con un perfil todoterreno (una opción que no estaba disponible para el nivel de acabados Custom, pero trae de vuelta algo de la tosquedad del Jeep promedio y ¡me encanta!), mientras la segunda presenta diseño de rimes muy preciso y lujoso 12 Spokes, con acabado cromado y llantas en caucho sintético labradas, con franjas blancas; la última ofrece una linda tarjeta de colección, impresa a todo color y ambas fueron hechas en China...

I have seen, specially in certain circles of automotive journalists and alleged car enthusiasts, a sort of animosity against Sport-Utility Vehicles or SUVs, as they are known mainly in the North American market, a typology of vehicles that had its origin in the World War II...
These people claim that somehow SUVs have been gradually overrunning the niche of other typologies of vehicles, like sedans / saloons, station / state wagons, vans / minivans and even 4-door hatchbacks, putting their continuity in the market at risk...
According to them as well, in the proccess of "cannibalizing" these market niches already mentioned, SUVs have influenced in a "negative" way the overall styling of these typologies of vehicles, distorting their particular proportions and design, making them visually unappealing...
In other words, these people are blaming SUVs of the extinction of sedans, station wagons, vans and hatchbacks in the near future, an approach that ignores not only the dynamics of the automotive market, but also the contribution of Sport-Utility Vehicles to the automotive industry as a whole, something that seemingly remains unseen for some "experts"...
Since I care less about the opinion of "automotive gurus" and more about the automotive world itself, I find that SUVs are a sort of "natural" evolution of other vehicle typologies that preceded them and I have mentioned precisely two of these typologies: sedans / saloons and station / state wagons.
But Sport-Utility Vehicles are more than just a mix of typologies or an "automotive Frankestein" and they actually offer several distinctive, innovative features.
Today I’m introducing a vehicle of this sometimes poorly understood typology, that is and was ahead of its time, besides it was revived this very year, as a 2022 model, my guests for this publication are based on the same vehicle: the 1981 Jeep Wagoneer SJ 4WD, a Full Size / Large Luxury 5-Door SUV / Wagon, that for this publication is represented in two trim levels, something similar to the Custom and an accurate reproduction of the Limited.
When the Wagoneer was released in late 1962, as a 1963 model, there was nothing like it in the market, in fact the Marketing Department at Kaiser Jeep (the owners of the brand at that moment), had issues trying to classify this development, because it was not a station wagon, nor an utility truck with more windows, I mean, the Chevrolet Suburban, a vehicle "in the same category", was far from being similar to this Jeep model.
I guess that was what the industrial designer Brooks Stevens had in mind when he developed this concept for a brand that needed, I would say desperately, something fresh to compete with the three largest manufacturers in U.S.A., and he absolutely did it, with a product that created a brand new segment: the Luxury 4x4 Sport-Utility Vehicles, that precedes at least by 6 years any other attempt by other brands to create something in the same league (I’m looking at you Range Rover)...
The Wagonner offered a chiseled design, that had its origin in utility, industrial vehicles, perhaps a little rugged and it looks nevertheless stylish, timeless, with smaller proportions than other full-size wagons, but complemented by luxurious touches inside and out, the convenience of power steering, power brakes, automatic transmission and 4x4 full-time, for proper on and off-road capabilities.
Besides, it offered many other features by default, according to the trim level, of course, like: leather upholstery, bucket seats, simulated woodgrain panels, chrome moldings, forged aluminum wheels: the kind of things you expected in a Northamerican luxury sedan, put in a wagon...
The model I’m featuring in this review was released by the time when Johnny Lightning was already part of the assets of (Takara) Tomy and it clearly shows all the quality and potential that this Premium diecast manufacturer had at that moment, potential that was squadered by a Japanese toys and collectibles manufacturer, that didn’t have a sensible idea about what to do with a brand that can be at par with its Tomica Limited Vintage / Neo line of Premium diecast...
One of the ideas posed by the (Takara) Tomy administration, that was not precisely a sound decision, was the introduction of plastic chassis and in some cases, also plastic wheels for a basic line released in 2012, including several series, apparently in an effort to cut costs and "popularize" this brand in different market niches, ignoring the fact that JL was already well positioned as a brand of Premium diecast scale models.
The result of this strategy makes you wonder if there was another motivation, like, for instance, get a competitor out of the way, just because 1 year later, Johnny Lightning was out of business...
This strategy (the creation a budget line) has been implemented by other manufacturers of collectibles, like GreenLight, with its Motor World line and Auto World with a basic line offering plastic chassis and wheels; some people would say that the Auto-Drivers line by M2 Machines is a similar initiative, but with a more upscale profile and given that the only difference with its top lines is the lack of opening features, it’s not in the same "league" actually...
What I have observed is that this kind of strategy only works in the short term, because once a brand has established a solid reputation in the market, with a certain profile, these budget lines hinder rather than help such reputation and must be discarded at some point, unless they’re upscaled...
Fortunately with the sub-licensing of Johnny Lightning to Thomas Lowe and Round 2, this and other bad decisions were reversed and the 1981 Jeep Wagoneer received all the love it deserved; I had the chance to get both the initial Tomy release and the first Round 2 release, obviously through the secondary market, with the help of a pair of friends of mine, fellow collectors and importers / private sellers, pretty much 9 and 5 years ago respectively.
This pair of Full Size SUVs, belong to the 2012 Johnny Lightning (Regular) Series Release 27 and to the 2016 Classic Gold Collection Series Release 1 respectively; the model has been used several times by Round 2, with different paint schemes and wheel designs, with or without trailer and that’s great, because it’s a stupendous casting.
The first one has diecast body and black plastic chassis, the second one has full diecast construction, proportions are spot on and with Johnny Lightning that’s not a fake statement, besides the level of detail, as well as the realism and finishes are at par with most products by reputed brands in the Premium segment.
The paint jobs were made in light beige / off-white and Vintage Red Metallic (a factory color), with excellent quality and they are complemented by complete tampos and/or decals, in the second sample the side and tailgate woodgrain panels are accurately reproduced and look fantastic.
The interiors were worked in nutmeg for both samples, another factory option in the actual Wagoneer, while the windows are clear.
This model offers opening hood with detailed and painted engine bay, but also opening tailgate, which includes a plastic insert inside, besides a roof luggage rack , all these features enhance the realism and overall appearance quite a bit.
Both samples offer multipart wheels, but the first one features Steelies 4 Slots rims design in light beige / off-white, "dog dish" hubcaps and styled synthetic rubber tires, with off-road profile (an option that was not available for the Custom trim level, but that brings back some of the ruggedness of the average Jeep and I love it!), while the second one features very accurate and luxurious 12 Spokes rims design, with chrome finishing and styled synthetic rubber tires, with white stripes; the last one offers as bonus a nice trading card, printed in full color and both were made in China...
