ENGLISH It must be really hard to find a car which, with barely one year of existence in the market, could be easily recognized by any person with an infinitesimal knowledge about cars... Come on! It could be recognized even by Ray Charles, if you know what I mean =PPPPP...
Despite the huge universe of "one of a kind" cars created in Europe, the continent with the widest variety of automotive brands; the most relevant car of the twentieth century, selected through a global poll, was not European but American...
Then, you got it!...
I will talk about an american vehicle, not the most relevant perhaps, but one with an unmistakable shape.
No one would believe that a character from the cartoons, more precisely from Looney Tunes by Warner Brothers, would be the source of inspiration for a Muscle Car and much less for a stock racing car, highly modified and specifically designed for NASCAR.
The 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird is the "one of a kind" vehicle I will introduce today and nobody will mistake it with other car (not even with its cousin: the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona).
Doubtless, this was one of the most risky bets of Plymouth, a car ahead of its time and a sort of "dinosaur" at the same time, something for which the market was not ready.
On the one hand, the emission regulations in the United States were becoming more and more stringent and the old Muscle Cars / Stock Racing Cars seemingly were not so environmentally friendly.
Also, these vehicles never were fuel economizers (if you want great performance, the fuel consumption should not be an issue for you) and the effects of the "imminent" oil crisis were already in force.
On the other hand, the Superbird design was so revolutionary that many customers preferred the regular Road Runner and hence, most of the Superbirds produced remained unsold on the back lots of dealerships, even until 1972...
Could you believe it?... Such a waste!...
If that weren’t enough, some of them were converted again in Road Runners or used as source for conversion kits =/////...
My sincere congrats to the visionaries who bought one of these extraordinary vehicles...
And what if those cowards, who despised the Superbirds, knew that nowadays, the pricing for one of them, in mint condition, could go from US$ 100,000+ to US$ 200,000 depending on the engine, gearbox and other factory options, HUH?...
I guess that go against the grain, yields results, don’t you think so? =PPPPP...
In a future publication, I will talk more about the Superbirds, their technical specs, engine options and everything else.
By now, let’s have a look at the scale model I’m publishing.
The Playing Mantis era, I mean, when this company was the owner of Johnny Lightning, was a time of transitions.
This diecast brand was always aimed to adult collectors, unlike let’s say: Hot Wheels, and their models had more detail than similar brands in the same scale of prices, but the old castings lacked of something highly sought by serious collectors: faithfulness in the proportion.
The model reviewed in this publication, represents a vintage cast and you can notice it by the its odd proportion, it just looks too tight compared with the actual car.
Now, I’m a serious collector, but in spite of the fact that I already mentioned, I love this model because the lack of correct proportion is fairly compensated by an extremely good level of detail or an excellent paint job (in one of the official colors available in the actual car: Go Mango, a sort of terracotta or burnt orange).
The tampos are awesome as well, including the nosecone, the side panels, the hood pins, the door handles, the Plymouth logo in the tail, a pair of tiny Road Runner logos / graphics (in the nosecone and the rear spoiler) and in the rubber tires (with BF Goodrich Radial T/A logos).
It has black interiors which work perfect in combination with the Go Mango outside, and obviously, belonging to a high end line, it has diecast body and chassis (the latter is polished and looks sumptuous!).
The model comes in a big and thick card, printed in full color and a trading card with the respective High Performace MOPAR Magazine cover, where the model was featured, is part of the extras...
The cherry on top is the fact that, it was a gift indeed!...
Amo 1:18-22 "Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light. As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him. Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?"
Plymouth Superbird sure looks cool and high performance. Like you had mentioned it probably drink lotz of petrol... Anyway, JL cast and paint job really good thru the proportion can be sleeker for this. For serious collector and one who have deep knowledge of the car like yourself.
a model like this is highly sought by collectors, specially with the sudden boom of the Fast ’N Furious movie saga (where this Superbird appears more than once), but a vintage model by Johnny Lightning is something hard to find nowadays... i really appreciate this gift from a friend and fellow collector, like all the gifts i have received so far !!!... =)

From now, I will be publishing basically the same contents in both blogs, but for reviews before March 18, 2019, you must read my Blogger blog...
I’m a professional graphic designer and a restful collector, but above all: I’m someone who doesn’t take for granted anything, just because someone else says so. I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...
