Recientemente, mientras estaba aprovechando mi descanso de la tarde, caminando, visité una tienda minorista relativamente cerca de donde vivo, como hago ocasionalmente, pero entonces sucedió algo curioso... 

Me dirigí a la sección de juguetes (¿¡dejà vu!? =PPPPP); raramente esta sección está sola, algunas veces puedes ver padres buscando un regalo para sus hijos y algunas veces los mismos niños están buscando ansiosamente algo de su gusto, que tal vez sus padres estarían dispuestos a comprarles. 

Pero esta vez, había un tipo, mirando atentamente cada gancho en la estantería de Hot Wheels y Matchbox, como alguien que está buscando algo específico (a propósito, él estaba en el lado de Hot Wheels); estaba reorganizando ciertos modelos y no necesité nada más para saber que era un coleccionista. 

Difícilmente hablo con extraños, pero después de un rato, cuando pasé al lado de Hot Wheels, el tipo me preguntó si estaba buscando una serie específica, me mostró el Corvette Gas Monkey Garage del 68 en su mano y me dijo que vio otro, si quería tomarlo. 

Cortésmente, pero como alguien que toma distancia, le dije que no estaba interesado en dicho modelo o en una serie en particular, aunque el auto mismo era bonito y luego abandoné el lugar, porque solo estaba mirando, no comprando... 

Le pude decir que en realidad ya había pasado la etapa en la cual buscaba o compraba solo los modelos más populares de Hot Wheels o Matchbox, simplemente porque otros lo hacen, pero ya que odio la prepotencia de algunos "coleccionistas" que piensan estar por encima del bien y del mal, lo consideré bastante inapropiado y despectivo... 

Le pude decir también, que de hecho lo que llamó poderosamente mi atención no fue precisamente un modelo que sea considerado popular, uno de esos modelos que son puestos a un lado por seudo-expertos que abundan en esta afición, pero percibí que él no entendería fácilmente mi elección tampoco y no tenía tiempo para explicaciones largas... 

Podrías preguntar la razón y la respuesta es muy simple: porque era un modelo de diseñador / conceptual y esta categoría de diecast ha sido degradada sistemáticamente por la mayoría de coleccionistas que no pueden descubrir sus virtudes, entre otras cosas, porque es más fácil estar de acuerdo con la mayoría que defender un punto de vista diferente. 

Digamos que soy parte de la disidencia; soy uno de los más bien pocos coleccionistas que, junto con sus modelos basados en coches reales, colecciona en igualdad de términos modelos de diseñador/conceptuales y diría que ser diseñador profesional, me pone en una mejor posición para evaluar ambos lados del mundo del diecast... 

De todos modos, quién puede apreciar realmente el trabajo y esfuerzo que un diseñador de diecast pone en un modelo conceptual, que otro diseñador, ¿EH?... 

Pero todas estas palabras serían solo un ejercicio retórico si no muestro evidencia contundente de mi cariño por este tipo de modelos, una entre otras disponibles en mi blog, entonces permíteme introducir mis invitados para esta publicación... 

El primero es llamado Super Modified y fue diseñado por Mark Jones, quien ha creado varios modelos de esta clase; para personas por fuera de Norteamérica, este modelo sería considerado simplemente otro capricho loco de Hot Wheels, pero en realidad representa un tipo especial de carro de carreras para competiciones de ruedas descubiertas conocido precisamente como Super Modified, del cual puedes encontrar un ejemplo aquí e incluí un video, solo en caso que no me creas =PPPPP... 

Fue lanzado en 1998, para la Serie First Editions, con al menos 13 iteraciones, el mío pertenece a la Serie Race World - Speedway, parte de la línea principal; tiene carrocería y chasis en diecast, presentando un nivel de detalle raramente visto en esta marca; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en blanco perlado, complementado por lindos tampos y/o calcomanías en azul, rojo y plateado; hay insertos plásticos para los alerones frontal y trasero y la jaula de seguridad; las ruedas plásticas presentan el diseño de rimes Wire Spoke Lace Wheels en dorado y fue hecho en Malasia. 

El segundo es un trabajo de Fraser Campbell, cuyo portafolio tiene muy pocos modelos basados en autos reales, con todo, en este F-Racer puedes ver un buen nivel de factibilidad, quiero decir, parece algo que podrías ver en el futuro cercano y tiene sentido comparado con algunos coches de carreras F1 conceptuales disponibles en internet; me encantan los volúmenes agudos en este diseño, que me recuerdan un jet caza, es mucho más hermoso y pulcro que los carros de carreras F1 reales... 

Fue lanzado en 2004, para la Serie First Editions y ha estado 14 veces en las líneas regulares hasta 2014, el mío pertenece a la Serie Trail Racers - Raceway; tiene chasis en diecast mientras que la carrocería es casi 50% diecast y 50% plástico, una configuración inusual, pero esta vez estoy bien con eso; el chasis fue pintado en azul oscuro con acabado Metalflake, la parte superior de la carrocería recibió amarillo brillante, mientras el plástico en medio es blanco y ambos recibieron una buena dosis de tampos y/o calcomanías en amarillo, azul oscuro, verde manzana, blanco y negro; las ruedas plásticas presentan diseño de rimes Phil Riehlman 5 Spoke en blanco, fue hecho en Malasia y los dos primeros modelos introducidos fueron conseguidos con la ayuda de un amigo, colega coleccionista e importador. 

Los siguientes dos modelos fueron regalos fabulosos de un estimado amigo mío y colega coleccionista que vive en Singapur, ¡definitivamente estoy bendecido con estos gestos amables y aún hay publicaciones pendientes al respecto!...  

Uno de ellos fue llamado Open-Wheel Racer y es parte de la Cajita Feliz de McDonald’s para 2012, una exclusividad para Singapur (hasta donde sé, los juguetes de la Cajita Feliz son diferentes en cada país) y pertenece a la Serie Team Hot Wheels - Blue Team; algunos de estos coches de juguete son basados en modelos pertenecientes a las líneas regulares, pero ese no es el caso aquí, ya que este artículo fue creado exclusivamente para McDonald’s, el diseño es algo que yo llamaría retrofuturista... 

Justo como en el caso de otros vehículos de esta serie publicados anteriormente y presentados en esta sesión de fotos, la construcción es similar a lo que encontrarías en la línea principal de Hot Wheels, pero los materiales son más pesados y con una calidad mejor; tiene carrocería en diecast y chasis plástico, este último es en parte negro y en parte gris; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en amarillo brillante y la decoración es provista por autoadhesivos a todo color, que obviamente apliqué, de acuerdo con las instrucciones simples incluidas; las ruedas plásticas presentan un diseño exclusivo también, similar al Wire Spoke Lace Wheels, con un contorno azul metalizado y fue hecho en China. 

El otro es llamado Hypertruck, basado en el modelo Reverb lanzado originalmente para la línea Acceleracers y fue diseñado por Phil Riehlman, el diseño en conjunto luce un poquitín raro, pero no es feo para nada, el frente me recuerda lejanamente un Lamborghini Gallardo, al cual le añadiste un platón, con el fin de crear una especie de super coupé utilidad, para cargar tus mercancías más rápido que el promedio... 

Fue lanzado en 2012, como parte de la Serie New Models, hasta aquí ha tenido 6 iteraciones, el mío pertenece a la Serie HW Race - Night Storm, parte de la línea principal; tiene carrocería plástica en verde medio perlado y chasis en diecast pintado en verde lima; la carrocería recibió una agradable decoración con tampos y/o calcomanías en lima, verde manzana y blanco, presentando franjas y dos logos de Hot Wheels grandes sobre los paneles laterales; los interiores y la parte interna del platón fueron trabajados en color marfil, mientras las ventanas están tintadas en verde; los interiores así como las ruedas plásticas en color marfil (que presentan diseño de rimes Open Hole 5 Spoke, con contornos en azul claro perlado), brillan en la oscuridad y fue hecho en Malasia...

Recently, while I was harnessing my afternoon brake, taking a walk, I visited a retail store relatively close to where I live, just like I do occasionally, but then something curious happened... 

I headed to the toys section (dejà vu!? =PPPPP); rarely this section is alone, sometimes you can see parents looking for a gift for their children and sometimes the kids themselves are looking eagerly for something of their taste, that maybe their parents would be willing to buy them. 

But this time, there was a guy, looking carefully to each hook on the shelf of Hot Wheels and Matchbox, like someone who is looking for something specific (he was in the Hot Wheel side, by the way); he was rearranging certain models and I didn’t need anything else to know that he was a collector. 

I hardly speak with strangers, but after a while, when I passed to the Hot Wheels side, the guy asked me if I was looking for a specific series, he showed me the ’68 Corvette Gas Monkey Garage in his hand and told me that he saw another one, if I wanted to pick it up. 

Politely, but as one who takes distance, I told him that I wasn’t interested in such model or in a series in particular, albeit the car itself was nice and then I left the place, because I was just looking, not buying... 

I could tell him that actually I had already got over the stage in which I looked for or bought only the most popular models of Hot Wheels or Matchbox, just because others do so, but since I hate the prepotency of some "collectors" who think that they are above good and evil, I considered it quite inappropriate and derogatory... 

I could tell him as well, that in fact what caught my attention powerfully was not precisely a model that’s considered popular, one of those models which are put aside by pseudo-experts who abound in this hobby, but I perceived that he wouldn’t understand my choice easily either and I had no time for long explanations... 

You may ask the reason and the answer is very simple: because it was a designer / concept model and this category of diecast has been sistematically degraded by most collectors who cannot discover their virtues, among other things, because it’s easier to agree with most than to defend a different point of view. 

Let’s say that I’m part of the disidence; I’m one of the rather few collectors who, along with their models based on actual cars, collects in equal terms designer/concept models and I would say that being a professional designer, puts me in a better position to assess both sides of the diecast world... 

Anyway, who can really appreciate the work and endeavour that a diecast designer puts in a concept model, than other designer, HUH?... 

But all these words would be just a rethoric exercise if I don’t show hard evidence of my affection for this kind of models, one among others available in my blog, then let me introduce my guests for this publication... 

The first one is called Super Modified and it was designed by Mark Jones, who has created several models of this kind; for people outside Northamerica, this model would be considered just another crazy whim of Hot Wheels, but it actually represents a special type of racing car for open wheel competitions known precisely as Super Modified, of which you can find an example here and I included a video, just in case you don’t believe me =PPPPP... 

It was released in 1998, for the First Editions Series, with at least 13 iterations, mine belongs to the Race World - Speedway Series, part of the mainline; it has diecast body and chassis, featuring a level of detail rarely seen in this brand; the paint job was made in pearled white, complemented by nice tampos and/or decals in blue, red and silver; there are plastic inserts for the front, rear wings and the roll cage; the plastic wheels feature Wire Spoke Lace Wheels rims design in golden and it was made in Malaysia. 

The second one is a work by Fraser Campbell, whose portfolio has very few models based on actual cars, yet, in this F-Racer you can feel a good level of feasibility, I mean, it seems like something you could see in the near future and it makes sense compared with some F1 concept racing cars available on the internet; I love the sharp volumes in this design, that remind me a jet fighter, it’s much more beautiful and neat that the actual F1 racing cars... 

It was released in 2004, for the First Editions Series and it has been 14 times in the regular lines until 2014, mine belongs to the Trail Racers - Raceway Series; it has diecast chassis while the body is almost 50% diecast and 50% plastic, an unusual configuration, but this time I’m fine with that; the chassis was painted in dark blue with Metalflake finishing, the top of the body received glossy yellow, while the plastic in the middle is white and both received a good dose of tampos and/or decals in yellow, dark blue, apple green, white and black; the plastic wheels feature Phil Riehlman 5 Spoke rims design in white, it was made in Malaysia and the first two models introduced were gotten with the help of a friend, fellow collector and importer. 

The following two models were fabulous gifts from a dear friend of mine and fellow collector who lives in Singapore, definitely I’m blessed with these kind gestures and there are still publications pending in this respect!... 

One of them is called Open-Wheel Racer and it’s part of the 2012 McDonald’s Happy Meal, an exclusivity made for Singapore (as far as I know, the Happy Meal’s toys are different in each country) and it belongs to the Team Hot Wheels - Blue Team Series; sometimes these toy cars are based on models belonging to the regular lines, but that’s not the case here, since this item was created exclusively for McDonald’s, the design is something I would call retrofuturistic... 

Just like in the case of other vehicles of this Series published previously and featured in this photoshoot, the construction is similar to what you would find in the mainline of Hot Wheels, but the materials are heavier and with a better quality; it has diecast body and plastic chassis, the latter is part black and part gray; the paint job was made in glossy yellow and the decoration is provided by full color stickers, that obviously I applied, according to the simple instructions included; the plastic wheels feature a exclusive design too, similar to the Wire Spoke Lace Wheels, with a metallic blue contour and it was made in China. 

The other one is called Hypertruck, based in the model Reverb released originally for the Acceleracers line and it was designed by Phil Riehlman, the design as a whole looks a bit weird, but it’s not ugly at all, the front reminds me distantly a Lamborghini Gallardo, to which you added a bed, in order to create a sort of super coupe utility, to carry your goods faster than average... 

It was released in 2012, as part of the New Models Series, so far it has had 6 iterations, mine belongs to the HW Race - Night Storm Series, part of the mainline; it has plastic body in pearled medium green and diecast chassis painted in lime green; the body received a nice decoration with tampos and/or decals in lime, apple green and white, featuring stripes and two big Hot Wheels logos on the side panels; the interiors and the inner part of the bed were worked in ivory color, while the windows are tinted in green; the interiors as well as the plastic wheels in ivory color (that feature Open Hole 5 Spoke rims design, with pearled light blue contours), glow in the dark and it was made in Malaysia...
