2004 - 2009 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 5 (Volkswagen GTI) - Compact Sport 3-Door Hatchback Coupe American Specs 2017 MBX Explorers Series 118/125 MB684 Diecast Scale 1:60 by Matchbox

En la historia de un modelo con casi 48 años en el mercado automotriz, es casi inevitable ver altibajos, ya sea por causa de las decisiones tomadas por los diferentes departamentos involucrados en el desarrollo de un producto dado o por causa de la fluctuación de las condiciones dentro y fuera de esta industria... 

A pesar de su estatus de ícono y referente de su propia tipología de vehículos, el Golf no ha sido ajeno a esta situación y si bien el modelo es todavía admirado por muchos, hay numerosos clubs de fanáticos alrededor del mundo cuyo foco es este auto, bueno, no todas las diferentes interpretaciones o generaciones de este producto de Volkswagen han ganado el mismo favor entre el público... 

Después de un enorme éxito con el Golf Mk 1, suficiente para hacerlo el rey de los HotHatches, principalmente en Europa y luego a nivel mundial, la segunda generación o Mk 2 continuó más o menos con el mismo nivel de reconocimiento, aunque creció ligeramente en tamaño y su diseño fue "germanizado", con líneas más redondas, más atenuado y formal con respecto a su predecesor (el cual fue diseñado por Giorgetto Giugiaro, un diseñador automotriz italiano). 

No obstante, no se puede decir lo mismo de la tercera y cuarta generaciones de la "versión cuadrada y deportiva del Escarabajo", por así decirlo, porque estas interpretaciones del Golf recibieron una avalancha de críticas. 

Este embate a la imagen del Golf vino no solo a causa de su diseño exterior, que era muy soso, carente de carácter, casi "genérico", sino porque era ligeramente más grande y complementado por los trenes de potencia exiguos disponibles: esta combinación desafortunada transformó un coche que fue conocido por su hazañas en desempeño, en un perro perezoso y regordete. 

Aparentemente, Volkswagen estuvo muy atenta a la retroalimentación de los clientes, incluso de la prensa automovilística y el resultado del esfuerzo de esta empresa fue mi invitado para esta publicación: el Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 5 de 2004 - 2009, un Coupé Deportivo Compacto 3 Puertas Hatchback con especificaciones americanas (Volante a la Derecha - RHD, por sus siglas en inglés). 

Para la quinta generación, el Golf fue objeto de una profunda revisión en todos los aspectos y eso es una obligación en un modelo de semejante calibre, el estilo fue mejorado bastante, tomando algunos elementos del lujoso Volkswagen Phaeton para la fascia frontal y hubo un uso más cohesivo, equilibrado y atractivo de las curvas a todo alrededor de la carrocería: el modelo ganó un montón de personalidad. 

Pero la reingeniería fue más allá del diseño exterior, esta revisión también incluyó la oferta de motores, la mecánica y estructura generales del vehículo, las cuales fueron responsables de una mejora notable en el rendimiento y gran parte de la reputación del Golf GTI original retornó: eso es esencial para un modelo que es tan importante en términos de ventas para Volkswagen, representó un renacimiento muy necesario... 

He tenido la idea que en conjunto, Matchbox ha ofrecido mejores carros de juguete que su contraparte, Hot Wheels, incluso después que la primera fue adquirida por Mattel en 1997 y no es una idea basada en lo que otros dicen sobre estas marcas, alguna suerte de preconcepción común, sino basado en lo que veo con mis propios ojos... 

Sin embargo, estoy abierto a reconsiderar mi percepción, como cualquier coleccionista experimentado debería, si encuentro evidencia de primera mano de lo contrario, porque estoy completamente consciente que la comparación es el mejor recurso para saber si algo es tan bueno como reclama ser o si algo es lo mejor de su clase, lo cual es incluso más cierto hoy en día cuando el mercadeo engañoso y la propaganda son usados de manera regular... 

Debo confesar que este es uno de los pocos casos donde Hot Wheels logra un mejor producto que su hermana naranja y eso es tanto sorprendente como refrescante; probablemente tiene que ver, al menos en parte, con el hecho que este artículo en particular fue lanzado cuando MBX ya era parte de Mattel... 

Conseguí este Golf GTI a través del mercado primario, en una tienda minorista local, en una época cuando la distribución era problemática; ha tenido al menos 15 iteraciones para la Línea Principal (categoría Regular), con la excepción de una versión hecha para la Serie Superfast de la categoría Adulta; el GTI es un auto interesante con perfil deportivo y por eso es que añadí este artículo a mi colección. 

Tomó algún tiempo darme cuenta que Hot Wheels fabricó un coche de juguete basado en prácticamente el mismo modelo, de la misma generación, pero una vez que mire mi colección, pude comparar las dos interpretaciones y tengo que decir que el balance favorece a HW, incluí ambos modelos en la sesión de fotos para esta reseña y el de MBX pertenece a la Serie MBX Explorers de 2017, parte de la categoría Regular, del otro puedes leer aquí. 

Ambos artículos ofrecen carrocería en diecast y chasis plásticos, en el caso del MBX, es plateado oscuro, pero la proporción entre diecast y plástico es mejor en la versión HW (punto para HW); las propociones en ambos fueron alteradas y eso es de esperarse, porque estos son coches de juguete, no réplicas a escala, pero el resultado es más realista en la versión MBX (punto para MBX). 

El nivel de detalle general es mejor en la versión HW (punto para HW) y lo puedes ver en los moldes, pero el trabajo de pintura tambien contribuye en ese sentido: la pintura gris en el MBX es muy gruesa y oculta varios detalles (punto para HW). 

Con respecto a la decoración con tampos y/o calcomanías, es más prolija en la versión MBX (punto para MBX), pero aplicada más precisa y pulcramente en la versión HW (punto para HW). 

Los interiores para ambos artículos fueron trabajados en negro, con nivel de detalle similar (básico) y ambos presentan ventanas ahumadas; la selección de ruedas plásticas para este modelo fue bastante atípica, diseño de rimes 5 Slot Muscle, con acentos y labio en rojo cromado, como su nombre señala, fue diseñado con Muscle Cars y coches deportivos norteamericanos en mente, así que luce algo raro en un auto deportivo europeo, pero estas ruedas carnudas están bien para mí y añaden algo de extra rudeza al Golf; finalmente fue hecho en Tailandia...

In the history of a model with almost 48 years in the automotive market, it’s nearly unavoidable to see ups and downs, either because of decisions made by the different departments involved in the development of a given product or because of the fluctuation in conditions inside and outside this industry... 

Despite its status of icon and referent of its own typology of vehicles, the Golf has not been alien to this situation and while the model is still admired by many, there are numerous clubs of fans around the world whose focus is this car, well, not all the different renditions or generations of this product by Volkswagen have earned the same favor among the public... 

After a huge success with the Golf Mk 1, enough to make it the king of HotHatches, mainly in Europe and later worldwide, the second generation or Mk 2 continued pretty much with the same level of recognition, albeit it grew slightly in size and its design was "germanized", with more rounded lines, more toned down and formal regarding its predecessor (which was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, an Italian automotive designer). 

Nonetheless, the same cannot be said about the third and fourth generations of the "squared and sporty version of the Beetle", so to say, because these renditions of the Golf received an avalanche of criticism. 

This onslaugh to the image of the Golf came not only because of its exterior design, that was very bland, lacking of character, almost "generic", but because it was slightly larger and complemented by the meager powertrains available: this unfortunate combination transformed a car that was known by its performance feats, in a lazy and chubby dog. 

Seemingly, Volkswagen was very attentive to the feedback of customers, even from the motoring press and the result of the effort of this company was my guest for this publication: the 2004 - 2009 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 5, a Compact 3-Door Hatchback Sport Coupe with American Specs (Right Hand Drive - RHD). 

For the fifth generation, the Golf underwent a thorough revision in all aspects and that’s a must in a model of such caliber, the styling was fairly improved, taking some elements from the luxurious Volkswagen Phaeton for the front fascia and there was a more cohesive, balanced and attractive use of curves all around the body: the model gained a lot of personality. 

But the re-engineering went beyond the exterior design, this revision also included the offer of engines, the overall mechanics and structure of the vehicle, which were responsible for a remarkable improvement in performance and much of the reputation of the original Golf GTI returned: that’s essential for a model that is so important in terms of sales for Volkswagen, it represented a much needed revival... 

I have had the idea that as a whole, Matchbox has offered better toy cars than its counterpart, Hot Wheels, even after the first one was acquired by Mattel in 1997 and it’s not an idea based on what others say about these brands, some sort of common preconception, but based on what I see with my own eyes... 

However, I’m open to reconsider my perception, as any experienced collector should do, if I find first hand evidence to the contrary, because I’m fully aware that comparison is the best resource to know is something is as good as it claims to be or if something is the best of its kind, which is even truer nowadays when deceiving marketing and propaganda are used in a regular basis... 

I must confess that this is one of few the cases where Hot Wheels achieves a better product than its orange sister and that’s both surprising and refreshing; probably it has to do, at least in part, with the fact that this particular item was released when MBX was already part of Mattel... 

I got this Golf GTI through the primary market, in a local retail store, at a time when distribution was problematic; it has had at least 15 iterations for the Mainline (Regular category), with the exception of a version made por the Superfast Series of the Adult category; the GTI is an interesting car with sporty profile and that’s why I added this item to my collection. 

It took some time for me to realize that Hot Wheels manufactured a toy car based on virtually the same model, from the same generation, but once I looked at my collection, I could compare the two renditions and I have to say that the balance favors HW, I included both models in the photoshoot for this review and the one by MBX belongs to the 2017 MBX Explorers Series, part of the Regular category, of the other one you can read here. 

Both items offer diecast body and plastic chassis, in the case of the MBX, it’s dark silver, but the proportion between diecast and plastic is better in the HW version (point for HW); the proportions in both were altered and that’s to be expected, because these are toy cars, not scale replicas, but the result is more realistic in the MBX version (point for MBX). 

The overall level of detail is better in the HW version (point for HW) and you can see it in the molds, but the paint job also contributes in that sense: the gray paint in the MBX is very thick and hide several details (point for HW). 

Regarding the decoration with tampos and/or decals, it’s more prolix in the MBX version (point for MBX), but more accurately and neatly applied in the HW version (point for HW). 

The interiors for both items were worked in black, with similar level of detail (basic) and both feature smoked windows; the plastic wheels selection for this model was quite atypical, 5 Slot Muscle rims design, with accents and lip in red chrome, as its name points, it was designed with American Muscle Cars and sports cars in mind, so it looks kind of weird in an European sports car, but these meaty wheels are fine for me and add some extra badassery to the Golf; finally, it was made in Thailand...
