Entre aquellos que reclaman ser coleccionistas de autos de juguete de Matchbox y parece ser que hay cientos de miles, incluso millones allá afuera, no ves a la vasta mayoría de ellos hablando acerca del corto periodo de tiempo cuando esta marca fue propiedad de Universal Toys Limited y Tyco Toys Incorporated...
Eso es "un poco" extraño si me lo preguntas, porque cualquier coleccionista adulto serio, cuyo foco esté en los productos de esta marca británica de coches de juguete en diecast, tiene al menos un conocimiento mínimo con respecto a su historia completa y eso incluye, desde luego, el periodo entre 1982 y 1997, cuando Universal y Tyco tomaron sus riendas...
Sin embargo, esto cesa de ser extraño una vez que te das cuenta que aquellos a quienes puedes contar en términos de cientos de miles, incluso millones, son en realidad simples compradores y ellos apenas tienen un conocimiento superficial sobre los artículos más recientes de esta marca, ni hablar de artículos más antiguos; pero en cuanto a los coleccionistas, los puedes contar solo en términos de miles, a lo sumo...
Ya que solo a los coleccionistas les importa la historia y no simplemente la historia alrededor de cierta marca de coleccionables, sino la historia mundial también, bueno, eso explica porque no escuchas o lees sobre la era Universal / Tyco tan a menudo.
Y debo decir que es una era interesante, aún teniendo en mente que la única y verdadera Era Dorada que Matchbox tuvo jamás (algo que expliqué aquí) terminó unos pocos años antes que esta marca fuera tomada por Universal, así que ya había perdido parte de su encanto y características originales, por las cuales era merecidamente admirada.
Con todo, en varios aspectos importantes, esta era Universal / Tyco es todavía mejor que lo que puedes ver en la era Mattel actual, excepto por modelos o Series específicas, y estas excepciones no ponen en cuestión la superioridad de la era Universal / Tyco de todas maneras, pero eso es algo que el conglomerado Mattel y su aparato de mercadeo no quieren que sepas.
Uno de esos aspectos críticos en los cuales la era Universal / Tyco es sustancialmente mejor que la era Mattel actual, tiene que ver con la cantidad de aleación de diecast usada en la construcción de estos carros de juguete, porque la construcción completa en diecast fue la norma en la mayoría del Rango 1-75 o Línea Principal de Matchbox.
Ahora, déjame poner esta aseveración en números, luego puedes notar más claramente la diferencia entre estas dos eras: mientras para 1982, el número de modelos con construcción completa en diecast (carrocería y chasis) fue 47, lo cual representa el 62,6% del Rango 1-75 o Línea Principal; para 2022, el número de modelos con construcción completa en diecast (carrocería y chasis) fue 0, lo cual representa el 0,0% del Rango 1-100 o Línea Principal.
Y aún en aquellos modelos con chasis plástico de la era Universal / Tyco, la dosis de diecast era mayor que en los modelos actuales; así que sí, algunas veces los números pueden ser bastante elocuentes con respecto a un asunto particular y sensible, como la dosis de diecast en, ya sabes, autos de juguete en diecast y ciertamente estas cifras son parte de la evidencia que desmiente la reclamación que Matchbox está mejorando con el tiempo.
No obstante, la superioridad de la era Universal / Tyco, comparada con la era Mattel de Matchbox, no es solo acerca de la dosis de diecast en sus productos, NO, hay otros aspectos a considerar, pero eso será abordado más en profundidad, si DIOS permite, en publicaciones futuras, junto con algo de la historia mundial de los 80s y 90s; después de todo, la industria no es ajena a lo que sucede a su alrededor, por el contrario...
Entonces, cambiémos el foco a mi invitada para publicación, basada o quizás más bien inspirada por: la Camioneta Pickup Ford F-100 (F-150) Ranger Flareside Cabina Regular 4x4 Platón Corto (6 1/2 ft.) de 1978 - 1979, una Camioneta Pickup de Tamaño Completo 1/2 Tonelada Clase 1 Todoterreno para Trabajo Liviano y abordaré sus rasgos en reseñas futuras.
La conseguí a través del mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador / vendedor privado, hace más o menos 6 años; debo confesar que realmente quería esta camioneta de juguete, desde la primera vez que vi una de ellas desgastada por el juego, pero digamos que un modelo lanzado hace 27 años no es fácil de conseguir, aún más en el mercado de mi ciudad natal (Bogotá, D.C., Colombia, Suramérica), donde es más bien difícil de encontrar en cualquiera de sus iteraciones.
Recuerdo que el día que la conseguí, estaba visitando la tienda de este amigo y colega coleccionista, coincidencialmente un lote nuevo de coleccionables había llegado y decidí echar un vistazo, a lo que él accedió y uno de los artículos que traje de vuelta fue esta fantástica Ford Flareside, de la cual él solo ordenó una.
Si hubiera llegado unos minutos después, alguien más la habría comprado sin duda alguna y habría tenido que esperar largo tiempo para obtener otra, eso es seguro; además, la conseguí por un precio razonable y esa ya era una obligación para mí como coleccionista.
Este modelo fue lanzado originalmente en 1982, precisamente por la misma época cuando Matchbox ya era parte de Universal Toys Limited y ha tenido al menos 57 iteraciones, incluyendo variaciones, todas para Líneas en la categoría Regular (Línea Principal o Rango 1-75); 30 de ellas fueron hechas como promocionales, con decoraciones de equipos de béisbol profesional diferentes e incluían una carga o cubierta de platón.
Ofrece carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico con acabado cromado, aunque la proporción de diecast es buena, la carencia de un chasis en diecast es un problema y es más liviana en la mano de lo que esperas, porque esta camioneta de juguete es más bien grande; un detalle curioso, es que para el ensamble de este producto, hay dos remaches traseros, en lugar de uno.
Por otro lado, el nivel de detalle general es muy bueno, me encanta la forma en que el bómper frontal, con protector de bómper y luces exploradoras, el bómper trasero y la barra antivuelco con luces exploradoras adicionales fueron trabajados, incluso hay un gancho de remolque; ¡estos detalles son mucho mejores que en las camionetas de juguete actuales!
El diseñador involucrado en el desarrollo de este modelo, sin embargo, incluyó el platón más corto con esta supuesta camioneta pickup F-150 4x4, pero esta opción solo estuvo disponible para el modelo F-100; supongo que fue una personalización intencional, factible en vehículos reales, luego realmente no me importa y un quemacocos diminuto fue moldeado en el techo; esta camioneta de juguete luce caricaturesca, incluso para un vehículo de carreras en dunas / tipo baja, en el cual se inspiró también, pero me encanta de esa manera.
El trabajo de pintura fue hecho en naranja fluorescente / neón, con acabado satinado, no demasiado grueso como es el caso hoy en día, así que los detalles de los moldes no son cubiertos; está complementado por una decoración simple pero agresiva, hecha con tampos, sobre el capó y los paneles laterales frontales, en negro satinado, con un diseño dentado: este trabajo grita 90s muy fuerte, con su estilo ostentoso, que de alguna manera se ajusta a este modelo como un guante.
Los interiores, trabajados en negro, tienen un nivel básico de detalle, pero el molde incluye los bonitos escapes laterales, parrilla frontal y barra antivuelco, que lucen muy realistas; insisto, mucho mejor que en los modelos similares actuales y las ventanas son transparentes.
Otra curiosidad de este modelo, es que tiene suspensión funcional, una característica descartada hace mucho tiempo en todos los coches de juguete de Matchbox, sin importar la Línea o Serie considerada, porque es "demasiado costosa de producir"; las ruedas plásticas presentan diseño de rimes Tipo Beadlock Off-Road, con labio cromado y un texto "Special Racing 620" en relieve, un diseño que no fue usado muy a menudo, a pesar de su encanto y este modelo fue hecho en China...

Among those who claim to be collectors of toy cars made by Matchbox and it seems there are hundreds of thousands, even millions out there, you don’t see the vast majority of them talking about the short period when this brand was owned by Universal Toys Limited and Tyco Toys Incorporated...
That’s "kind of" strange is you ask me, because any serious adult collector, whose focus is on the products of this British diecast toy cars brand, has at least a minimal knowledge regarding its complete history and that includes, of course, the period between 1982 and 1997, when Universal and Tyco took its reins...
However, it stops being strange once you realize that those you can count in terms of hundreds of thousands, even millions, are actually simple buyers and they barely have a shallow knowledge about the most recent items of this brand, let alone older items; but as for collectors, you can count them only in terms of thousands, at most...
Since only collectors do care about history and not just the history around a certain brand of collectibles, but the world history too, well, that explains why you don’t hear or read about the Universal / Tyco era so often.
And I must say that it’s an interesting era, even bearing in mind that the true and only Golden Era that Matchbox ever had (something I explained here) ended a few years before this brand was taken by Universal, so it had already lost part of its original charm and features, by which it was deservedly admired.
Yet, in several important aspects, this Universal / Tyco era is still better than what you can see in the current Mattel era, except by specific models or series, and these exceptions don’t call into question the superiority of the Universal / Tyco era anyway, but that’s something the Mattel conglomerate and its marketing apparatus don’t want you to know.
One of those critical aspects in which the Universal / Tyco era is substantially better than the current Mattel era, has to do with the amount of diecast alloy used in the construction of these toy cars, because the full diecast construction was the norm in most of the 1-75 Range or Mainline of Matchbox.
Now, let me put this assertion in numbers, so you can notice more clearly the difference between these two eras: while for 1982, the number of models with full diecast construction (body and chassis) was 47, which represent the 62.6% of the 1-75 Range or Mainline; for 2022, the number of models with full diecast construction (body and chassis) was 0, which represent the 0.0% of the 1-100 Range or Mainline.
And even in those models with plastic chassis of the Universal / Tyco era, the dose of diecast was greater than in the current models; so yeah, sometimes numbers can be quite eloquent regarding a particular and sensitive matter, like the dose of diecast in, you know, diecast toy cars and certainly these figures are part of the evidence denying the claim that Matchbox is getting better over time.
Nonetheless, the superiority of the Universal / Tyco era, compared with the Mattel era of Matchbox, is not only about the dose of diecast in its products, NO, there are other aspects to consider, but that will be addressed in more depth, if GOD allows, in future publications, along with some of the world history of the 80s and 90s; after all, the industry is not alien to what’s happening around it, conversely...
Then, let’s change the focus to my guest for this publication, based or perhaps rather inspired by: the 1978 - 1979 Ford F-100 (F-150) Ranger Flareside Regular Cab 4x4 Short Bed (6 1/2 ft.) Pickup Truck, a Full Size 1/2 Ton Class 1 Off-Road Light Duty Off-Road Pickup Truck and I will address its traits in future reviews.
I got it through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, pretty much 6 years ago; I must confess I really wanted this toy truck, since the first time I saw one of them playworn, but let’s say that a model released 27 years ago is not easy to find, even more in the market of my hometown (Bogotá, D.C., Colombia, South America), where it’s rather hard to come by in any of its iterations.
I remember that the day I got it, I was visiting the store of this friend and fellow collector, coincidentally a new batch of collectibles had arrived and I decided to sneak a peek, to which he agreed and one of the items I brought back was this fantastic Ford Flareside, of which he only ordered one.
If I had arrived some minutes later, someone else would have purchased it without a doubt and I would have to wait a long time to get another one, that’s for sure; besides, I got it for a reasonable price and that was already a must for me as collector.
This model was originally released in 1982, precisely by the same time when Matchbox was already part of Universal Toys Limited and it has had at least 57 iterations, including variations, all for Lines in the Regular category (Mainline or 1-75 Range); 30 of them were made as promotional, with decorations of different professional baseball teams and included a load or bed cover.
It offers diecast body and plastic chassis with chrome finishing, albeit the diecast proportion is good, the lack of a diecast chassis is an issue and it’s lighter in the hand than what you expect, because this toy truck is rather big; a curious detail, is that for the assembling of this product, there are two rear rivets, instead of one.
On the other hand, the overall level of detail is very good, I love the way the front bumper, with bumper guard and scout lights, rear bumper and anti rollbar with additional scout lights were worked, even there is a tow hook; these details are so much better than in current toy trucks!
The designer involved in the development of this model, however, included the shortest bed with this supposed F-150 4x4 pickup truck, but this option was only available for the F-100 model; I guess it was an intentional customization, feasible in actual vehicles, so I really don’t mind about it and a tiny sunroof was molded in the roof; this toy truck looks cartoonish, even for a dune / baja racing vehicle, in which it was inspired as well, but I love it that way.
The paint job was made in fluorescent / neon orange, with satin finishing, not too thick as is the case nowadays, so the details of the molds are not covered; it’s complemented by a simple but aggressive decoration, made with tampos, on the hood and front side panels, in satin black, with a jagged design: this work screams 90s very loud, with its flashy style, that somehow fits this model like a glove.
The interiors, worked in black, have basic level of detail, but the mold includes the nice side exhausts, front grille and anti rollbar, that look very realistic; I insist, much better than in similar current models and the windows are clear.
Another curiosity of this model, is that it has working suspension, a feature discarded long time ago in all the toy cars offered by Matchbox, regardless the Line or Series considered, because it’s "too expensive to produce"; the plastic wheels feature Beadlock Off-Road Type rims design, with chrome lip and a text "Special Racing 620" embossed, a design that was not used so often, despite its charm and this model was made in China...
