Cada vez que revisito la era dorada de los Muscle Cars, encuentro más y más consistente compararla con la fauna salvaje... 

Créeme, no fue fortuito que al menos un fabricante de autos, el cual creó un par de los más representativos exponentes de este segmento, usó los nombres Mustang y Cougar, con el fin de dar identidad a su línea de coches deportivos para la clase media norteamericana... 

El Mustang es oficialmente conocido como la semilla que dió origen a un segmento de los Muscle Cars, los Pony Cars, pero lo que mucha gente no sabe es que en realidad, hubo un modelo que fue lanzado dos semanas antes y recibió mucha menos atención y crédito por su hazaña. 

No todas las leyendas de este segmento automotriz, fueron dotadas con nombres sorprendentes durante su desarrollo, algunos de ellos fueron en verdad menos que afortunados y el modelo que estoy mencionando estaba destinado a ser llamado Panda... 

No me tomen a mal, el nombre Panda fue usado después por Fiat para uno de los city cars más reconocidos y longevos hecho jamás y eso estuvo muy bien. 

Pero yo no relacionaría el nombre Panda con un auto americano de alto rendimiento, de la estirpe de los Muscle Cars, a menos que tuviera un gusto retorcido para el sarcasmo o si fuera un visitante regular (como paciente) de un manicomio... 

No conozco la lista completa de nombres considerada para este modelo, pero afortunadamente la decisión final fue más que apropiada y los entusiastas de los coches, lo recordarán como uno de los vehículos más impactantes y exclusivos jamás concebidos por Plymouth... 

Bueno, un Muscle Car merece un nombre feroz y eso es precisamente lo que consiguió; fue tomado prestado de un depredador natural, un pez de agua salada del género Sphyraena, que se encuentra en los océanos tropicales y subtropicales de todo el mundo. 

Su rasgo más prominente son los dientes afilados, como colmillos, similares a los que puedes encontrar en las pirañas y convenientemente acomodados en cuencas de sus grandes mandíbulas. 

Este pez intimidante, tiene una mala reputación como depredador voraz y oportunista, caracterizado por ataques sorpresa (incluso en humanos), una especie muy competitiva que puede ser vista luchando por su presa con peces más grandes como la caballa, pez espada y aún el delfín... 

Intimidante, voraz, competitivo son atributos que esperaría de un Muscle Car americano original y eso es lo que el Plymouth HEMI Cuda Coupé 2 Puertas Notchback de 1971 inspira, justo como las barracudas...

Hace más de 2 años, en una decisión más bien no planeada, conseguí este par de bellezas de un colega coleccionista, que resulta ser un fanático de los videojuegos y tiene / tenía una colección enfocada principalmente en modelos de Hot Wheels... 

En ese punto, HW estaba lejos de mi radar de coleccionista y apenas estaba desarrollando mi gusto por dicha marca, parte del conglomerado Mattel; irónicamente, un diecast hecho por Hot Wheels fue la excusa para contactarlo. 

Nosotros, los coleccionistas, como cualquier otro gremio o grupo de personas con intereses afines, somos complicados, reservados, desconfiados y tenemos razones para eso... 

No obstante, este colega coleccionista es un tipo agradable, compartimos conocimientos interesantes sobre nuestra afición y debo admitir que, mientras él aprendió a apreciar otras marcas por mí, yo aprendí a apreciar a Hot Wheels por él, ¡es fabuloso conocer gente como esa!... 

Él importó estos diecast, no muy convencido que encontraría un comprador para ellos, pero tenían un dueño secreto que se presentaría a su debido tiempo... 

Yo, ¡HA!... 

Ya que estaba obsesionado con HW, noté que no fue un gran problema para él "deshacerse" de estos modelos y estaba complacido pues pude rescatarlos por un precio bastante decente... 

¡Viejo, mis habilidades de negociación son maquiavélicas =PPPPP!... 

Pertenecen a una línea de "nivel de entrada" de M2 Machines, que logró una gran reputación entre los coleccionistas, gracias a su excelente calidad por un costo razonable (a propósito, sus precios han crecido de forma sostenida, especialmente para los artículos de los primeros lanzamientos, como estos publicados aquí). 

Esta serie usa tarjetas grandes y gruesas, a todo color, en vez de los clamshell usuales como empaque, también incluye una base de exhibición agradable aunque más simple, con el nombre del modelo impreso; los modelos tienen carrocería en diecast, el chasis es plástico pero el detalle es bueno; tienen tornillos en vez de remaches, no tienen apertura de puertas o capó y la aparencia general no es de concesionario sino más bien personalizada. 

El primero tiene un trabajo de pintura fantástico en rojo con decoración en blanco y plateado, extrañamente representa la del 440-Sixpack; los tampos incluyen las luces delanteras, luces direccionales, luces de cola, colectores de aire del capó, molduras alrededor de las ventanas y logos / insignias; tiene insertos plásticos en negro para la parrilla frontal y la cola que incluyen los respectivos bómperes, los interiores son plateados con un acabado "escarchado" y agradablemente detallado; las ruedas son multiparte con rimes deportivos negros y llantas en caucho labradas con franjas rojas. 

El segundo tiene características similares, pero el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en rosa policromado con negro mate para el capó, la parrilla frontal fue pintada en plateado, el bómper frontal y los insertos de cola son cromados; tiene un deflector trasero negro, el diseño del capó es diferente, la decoración es la correcta para la versión HEMI en negro sobre la carrocería y blanco sobre el capó, los interiores son negros; finalmente, las ruedas son multiparte con rimes cromados deportivos y llantas labradas de caucho con diseño idéntico al anterior...

Each time I revisit the golden age Muscle Cars, I find more and more consistent to compare it with the wildlife... 

Believe me, it was not a fortuity that at least one carmaker, which created a pair of the most representative exponents of this segment, used the names Mustang and Cougar, in order to give identity to its sport cars line for the american middle class... 

The Mustang is officially acknowledged as the seed that gave rise to a segment of Muscle Cars, the Pony Cars, but what many people don’t know is that actually, there was a model that was released two weeks earlier and received much less attention and credit for its feat. 

Not all the legends of this automotive segment were gifted with striking names during their development, some of them were indeed less than fortunate and the model I’m mentioning was meant to be called Panda... 

Don’t get me wrong, the name Panda was later used by Fiat for one of the most recognizable and long-lived city cars ever made and that was pretty fine. 

But I would not relate the name Panda with an american high performance car of the lineage of the Muscle Cars, unless I had a twisted taste for sarcasm or I were a regular visitor (as patient) of a madhouse... 

I don’t know the complete list of names considered for this model, but fortunately the final decision was more than appropriate and the car enthusiasts will remember it as one of the most shocking and exclusive vehicles ever conceived by Plymouth... 

Well, a Muscle Car deserves a fierce name and that’s precisely what it got; it was borrowed from a natural predator, a saltwater fish of the genus Sphyraena, found in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. 

Its most prominent trait is the sharp-edged, fang-like teeth, similar to what you can find in the piranhas and conveniently set in sockets of its large jaws. 

This intimidating fish has a bad reputation as a voracious and opportunistic predator, characterized by surprise attacks (even on humans), a very competitive species that can be seen fighting for its prey with larger fishes like the mackerel, needle fish and even the dolphin... 

Intimidating, voracious, competitive are attributes I would expect from an original american Muscle Car and that’s what the 1971 Plymouth HEMI Cuda 2-Door Notchback Coupe inspires, just like the barracudas... 

A more extensive description of its aesthetic and mechanical qualities will be shared in a future publication... 

More than 2 years ago in a rather unplanned decision, I got this pair of beauties from a fellow collector who happens to be a videogames fanatic and has/had a collection mainly focused on Hot Wheels models... 

At that point, HW was far from my collector’s radar and I was barely developing my taste for such brand, part of the Mattel conglomerate; ironically, a diecast made by Hot Wheels was the excuse to contact him. 

We, the collectors, as any other guild or group of people with related interests, are complicated, reserved, kinda distrustful and we have reasons for that... 

Nonetheless, this fellow collector is a nice guy, we shared interesting knowledge about our hobby and I must admit that, while he learned to appreciate other diecast brands from me, I learned to appreciate Hot Wheels from him, is great to meet people like that!... 

He imported these diecast, not so convinced that he would find a buyer for them, but they had a secret owner who would show himself in due time... 

Me, LOL!... 

Since he was kinda obsessed with HW, I noticed it was not a big deal for him to "get rid" of these models and I was glad that I could rescue them for a pretty decent price... 

Man, my negotiation skills are machiavellian =PPPPP!... 

They belong to an "entry-level" line by M2 Machines that has achieved a great reputation among collectors, thanks to their excellent quality for a reasonable cost (by the way, their prices have grown steadily, specially for items from the first releases, like these published here). 

This series uses big and thick full color cards instead of the usual clamshell as packaging, also includes a nice but simpler display base with the name of the model printed; the models have diecast body, the chassis is plastic but the detail is good; they have screws instead of rivets, don’t have openable doors or hood and the overall appearance is not stock but rather custom. 

The first one has a fantastic paint job in red with decoration in white and silver, oddly represents that of the 440-Sixpack; the tampos include the headlights, directional lights, tail lights, hood scoops, moldings around the windows and logos / badges; it has plastic inserts in black for the front grille and the tail that include the respective bumpers, the interiors are silver with a "frosty" finishing and nicely detailed; the wheels are multipart with sporty black rims and styled rubber tires with red stripes. 

The second one has similar features, but the paint job was made in polychrome pink with flat black for the hood, the front grille was painted in silver, the front bumper and the tail inserts are chrome; it has a black rear spoiler, the hood design is different, the decoration is the right one for the HEMI version in black on the body and white on the hood, the interiors are black; finally, the wheels are multipart with chrome sporty rims and styled rubber tires with identical design to that of the previous one...
