En la mayoría de casos, el entusiasta promedio de los autos no se sentirá eufórico cuando alguien menciona su simpatía por un Vehículo Compacto Multi-Propósito (C-MPV, por sus siglas en inglés); por el contrario, el primero preguntará estupefacto: ¿estás mal de la cabeza, amigo?... 

Los MPVs, no han sido objeto de la admiración del público en general y tal vez esto tiene que ver con esos rasgos de vehículo utilitario que los caracterizan; algunas personas piensan que tales rasgos les quitan cierto "estatus", justo como sucede con los modelos convertidos en taxis... 

No sé exactamente cómo funcionara en otros países, pero en mi patria Colombia, un modelo pierde entre 10% y 20% de su valor comercial de venta o reventa, una vez que una versión taxi es lanzada. 

Por otra parte, los MPVs, Minivanes, Vehículos de Actividad Recreativa (LAVs, por sus siglas en inglés) o como quieras llamarlos, han sido diseñados más o menos como cajas sobre ruedas, lo cual difícilmente podría ser considerado irresistible o arrebatador por la mayoría de gente y esto ha sido así desde su apogeo en los 80s. 

Ahora, hubo un tiempo cuando pensaba que los vehículos encajados eran más bien horribles, sin gusto; pero dicha percepción cambió cuando conocí más sobre la historia de fondo y la época en que fueron concebidos; tú sabes, eso es lo que el conocimiento hace usualmente, cambia mentalidades. 

Hay un principio simple detrás de la silueta encajada: permite el máximo aprovechamiento posible del espacio, ya sea para carga o pasajeros, aunque representa un reto en términos de aerodinámica. 

Esta silueta encajada, no obstante, ha estado evolucionando; como en otros segmentos, de vez en cuando una marca de coches viene con una idea revolucionaria sobre una tipología de carros trillada, recientemente fue el turno de Ford para cambiar las reglas de juego. 

Cuando se trata de pensar "por fuera de la caja", literalmente, Ford es capaz de sorprendernos con vehículos que establecen una nueva pauta y eso es precisamente lo que sientes con la Vagoneta de Carga - Vehículo Multi-Propósito Compacto Ford Transit Connect XL -LWB- (Distancia Entre Ejes Larga, por sus siglas en inglés) de 2013. 

Este modelo ha estado en el mercado por un tiempo considerable (desde 1965, cuando fue introducido oficialmente en Europa, más específicamente en Reino Unido) y comprende un grupo de vehículos utilitarios que ofrece varias configuraciones de carrocería para carga, pasajeros o una combinación de ambos. 

La Connect es una variante más pequeña de la Transit, creada con los emprendimientos o microempresas en mente y para 2013, recibió mucho más que un facelift. 

En realidad destaca entre las otras ofertas en este segmento; en mi opinión como diseñador, incluso la líder de este mercado, la Mercedes-Benz Metris, no luce tan impactante como la Connect, que resulta un ejemplo grandioso de la Filosofía de Diseño Cinético, impulsada por Martin Smith, el Director Ejecutivo de Diseño para Ford de Europa. 

Fue creada por la subsidiaria de Ford anteriormente mencionada y construida sobre la plataforma del Focus; la Transit Connect fue un paso en la dirección correcta para Ford, después de un desempeño en ventas no tan bueno de la generación previa de Minivanes / MPVs, creadas hasta 2008. 

El modelo de fábrica luce realmente innovador, con estilo y personalidad diría yo, pero estoy presentando un vehículo custom que fue desarrollado para el SEMA de 2013 (Asociación del Mercado para Equipamiento Especializado, por sus siglas en inglés) y obviamente, fue una poderosa herramienta de mercadeo... 

En esta Transit Connect Custom, tomaron parte Ford Motors Company, Hot Wheels y Ice 9 Group (este último de Michigan), fue altamente modificada por dentro y por fuera. 

Entre las numerosas alteraciones, podría mencionar un kit completo de carrocería ancha look-euro, que le da una pinta aún más agresiva, definitivamente el frente (inspirado en el Focus RS) y los guardafangos abombados ayudan en ese sentido; rimes de 20" Rotiform ROC, almacenamiento de herramientas, cajones deslizables (¡obviamente para tu colección de Hot Wheels!); puertas laterales alas de gaviota en vez de las puertas deslizantes de fábrica; asientos Recaro (de un Focus ST), un TV de 55", un par de tabletas de 18" y si eso no fuera suficiente, estaba remolcando otro fabuloso Concepto Hot Wheels: el Rip Rod... 

Qué más podrías pedir, ¿EH? =PPPPP... 

A veces, mi "fe" en Mattel y un par de sus productos, a saber: Hot Wheels y Matchbox, regresa y me siento feliz de nuevo, como un niño, lo que es inusual, ya que Mattel piensa más en su lucro que en la felicidad de los coleccionistas, para ser honesto. 

No estoy hablando esta vez sobre los problemas de disponibilidad de modelos, que permanece sin resolver, aunque esporádicamente ves alguna mejora. 

NO, estoy hablando de los lanzamientos recientes de Hot Wheels, que son ya sea un completo éxito o un completo fracaso, raramente algo en el medio; está claro que mi publicación hoy, introduce uno de esos éxitos completos. 

La Ford Transit Connect de HW es un modelo con increíble potencial y leí en algún lado, que algunas personas estaban esperando una versión exclusiva de SEMA, disponible para la venta sólo en el evento de lanzamiento (parece que la envidia y la codicia abundan, ¿no crees?); pero Hot Wheels decidió poner esta deliciosa réplica a escala en las manos de muchas más personas (¡un gesto tan generoso de Mattel, que es casi inverosímil!)...

Este modelo fue diseñado por Fraser Campbell, parte de la nueva escuela y hasta ahora, solo 3 iteraciones han sido hechas (incluyendo variaciones); es un molde realmente genial, bastante detallado, realista y de buena proporción. 

El mío es el modelo debút, perteneciente a la Serie HW Workshop - HW Garage y es por lejos la mejor de todas las tres iteraciones (tan tremenda, que conseguí dos de la mismísima Serie); fue en efecto un proceso de selección árduo, buscándolas en varias tiendas minoristas, entre muchas con errores, tampos mal colocados o incompletos y casi me rendí. 

Tienen carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico plateado; el trabajo de pintura es una reproducción muy precisa de la decoración en el auto real (¡que es extremadamente raro para los estándares de Hot Wheels!), pero hice algunos retoques aquí y allá, ligeramente diferentes en ambas, que las hizo incluso más encantadoras para mí. 

Los interiores son negros, con un nivel de detalle decente, solo para la cabina, las ventanas son ahumadas, las ruedas plásticas presentan diseño de rimes Open Hole 5 Spoke (OH5S) con contorno en naranja cromado y fueron hechas en Malasia...

In most cases, the average car enthusiast will not feel euphoric when someone mentions his sympathy for a Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle (C-MPV); on the contrary, the first one will ask dumbfounded: are you wrong in the head, pal?... 

The MPVs, have not been subject of the admiration from the general public and maybe it has to do with those traits of utilitarian vehicle that characterize them; some people think that such traits take away certain "status", just like it happens with the models converted into taxi cabs... 

I don’t know exactly how it works in other countries, but in my homeland Colombia, a model loses between 10% and 20% of its commercial value for sale or resale, once a taxi version is released. 

On the other hand, the MPVs, Minivans, Leisure Activity Vehicles (LAVs) or whatever you wanna call them, have been designed pretty much like boxes on wheels, which hardly could be considered compelling or ravishing by most people and it has been this way since their heyday in the 80s. 

Now, there was a time when I thought that boxy vehicles were rather awful, tasteless; but such perception changed when I knew more about the backstory and the time when they were conceived; you know, that’s what knowledge usually does, changes mindsets. 

There is a simple principle behind the boxy shape: it allows the maximum use of space possible, either for cargo or for passengers, although it represents a challenge in terms of aerodynamics. 

This boxy shape, nonetheless, has been evolving; as in other segments, every now and then a car brand comes with a revolutionary idea about a hackneyed typology of vehicles, recently it was the turn of Ford to change the game rules. 

When it comes to "think out of the box", literally, Ford is able to amaze us with vehicles that set a new standard and that’s precisely what you feel with the 2013 Ford Transit Connect XL -LWB- (Long Wheel Base) Cargo Van - Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle. 

This model has been in the market for a considerable time (since 1965, when it was officially introduced in Europe, more specifically in United Kingdom) and comprises a group of utilitarian vehicles that offers several body configurations for cargo, passengers or a combination of both. 

The Connect is a smaller variant of the Transit, created with the startups and microenterprises in mind and for 2013, received much more than a facelift. 

It actually stands out among the other offers in this segment; in my opinion as designer, even the leader of this market, the Mercedes-Benz Metris, doesn’t look as impactful as the Connect, which results a great sample of the Kinetic Design Philosophy, driven by Martin Smith, the Executive Design Director for Ford of Europe. 

It was created by the previously mentioned Ford subsidiary and built on the platform of the Focus; the Transit Connect was a step in the right way for Ford, after a not so good sales performance of the previous generation of Minivans / MPVs, created until 2008. 

The factory model looks really cutting edge, with style and personality I would say, but I’m featuring a custom vehicle that was developed for the 2013 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) and obviously, it was a powerful marketing tool... 

In this Custom Transit Connect, took part Ford Motors Company, Hot Wheels and Ice 9 Group (the latter from Michigan), it was heavily modified inside and out. 

Among the numerous alterations, I could mention a full euro-look wide body kit, that gives it an even more aggressive look, definitely the front (inspired in the Focus RS) and the flared fenders help in that sense; 20" Rotiform ROC Wheels, tool storage, slide-out drawers (obviously for your Hot Wheels collection!); gullwing side doors instead of the factory sliding doors; Recaro seats (from a Focus ST), a 55" TV, a pair of 18" tablets and if that weren’t enough, it was hauling another fabulous Hot Wheels Concept: the Rip Rod... 

What else you may ask, HUH? =PPPPP... 

At times, my "faith" in Mattel and a pair of its products, namely: Hot Wheels and Matchbox, returns and I feel happy again, like a kid, which is unusual, since Mattel thinks more on its profit than in the collectors’ happiness, to be honest. 

I’m not talking this time about the issues in the availability of models, that remain without resolving, albeit sporadically you see some improvement. 

NO, I’m talking about the recent releases by Hot Wheels, which are either a complete success or a complete failure, rarely something in the middle; it’s clear that my publication today, introduces one of those complete hits. 

The HW Ford Transit Connect is a model with incredible potential and I read somewhere, that some people were expecting a SEMA exclusive version, available for sale only at the launch event (it looks like envy and greed pullulate, don’t you think so?); but Hot Wheels decided to put this delicious scale replica in the hands of much more people (such a generous gesture from Mattel, that it’s almost unbelievable!)...

This model was designed by Fraser Campbell, part of the new school and until now, only 3 iterations have been made (including variations); it’s a really cool cast, fairly detailed, realistic and shapely. 

Mine is the debut model, belonging to the HW Workshop - HW Garage Series and it’s by far the best of all the three iterations (so great, that I got two of the very same Series); it was indeed an arduous selection process, looking for them in several retail stores, among many with errors, misplaced or incomplete tampos and I almost gave up. 

They have diecast body and silver plastic chassis; the paint job is a very accurate reproduction of the decoration in the actual car (that’s extremely rare for the Hot Wheels standards!), but I made some touch ups here and there, slightly different in both, that made them even more lovely for me. 

The interiors are black, with decent level of detail, only for the cabin, the windows are smoked, the plastic wheels feature the Open Hole 5 Spoke (OH5S) rims design, with orange chrome contour and they were made in Malaysia...
