2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Z71 4x4 Stepside Short Bed Extended Cab (2+1 Doors) - Full Size Pickup Truck - Cool Collection Series Diecast Scale 1:72 by Welly

Me gusta pensar que siempre hay alguna clase de historia detrás de la selección de nombres para un producto dado, simplemente porque esto es mucho más que etiquetar cosas, un nombre es el vínculo primordial entre productos y personas (o entre cosas y personas, en un sentido profundo); aunque ese no es siempre el caso y hay gente inconsciente de la importancia de este asunto... 

En el costado sur-occidental de los Estados Unidos, más precisamente en el borde oriental de Condado de Orange, California, circunscrito en las montañas de Santa Ana, en los límites del Bosque Nacional Cleveland, hay una región escabrosa que incluye un cañón y una pequeña ciudad compartiendo un nombre particular... 

Silverado es un lugar lleno de historia, literalmente, las paredes de este cañón preservan un montón de fósiles de almejas, caracoles y criaturas de caparazón pequeño como calamares, porque hubo un tiempo cuando esta región fue cubierta por el mar. 

Los primeros habitantes de estas tierras fueron Nativos Americanos y hubo varias tribus alrededor, quienes encontraron densos bosques donde los robles, sicomoros, serbales y pinos eran los árboles más prominentes. 

Más tarde, en esta área hubo tierras en concesión para gente española y mexicana, en efecto la presencia española en la región fue importante, con varias colonias y ellos fueron responsables en gran parte por la extinción de la población indígena, ya que trajeron consigo varias enfermedades; sin mencionar que California fue una vez parte de México, hasta la invasión norteamericana, facilitada por un gobierno mexicano inestable y débil. 

Además de diferentes conflictos, la región de Silverado sufrió también los efectos de dos fiebres mineras sucesivas, la primera relacionada con plata y la otra con carbón, y las historias continuan, pero me pregunto si estos elementos fueron tenidos en cuenta al momento de seleccionar el nombre para una línea de camionetas pickup hecha por Chevrolet desde 1999... 

¿Has pensado alguna vez en esta clase de cosas mirando a la invitada para esta publicación: la Camioneta Pickup de Tamaño Completo Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Z71 4x4 Stepside Platón Corto Cabina Extendida (2+1 Puertas) de 2000?... 

Porque sí, debe su nombre a este lugar, un punto de referencia histórico de California y, de hecho, Silverado es una palabra compuesta, parte Inglés, parte Español, ¡imagínate!... 

Vivir amarrado a una sola marca de coleccionables no es mi idea de disfrutar o sacar el máximo provecho de esta afición, por eso es que estoy usualmente explorando otros fabricantes, fuera de las abrumadoras marcas populares, que algunas veces son decepcionantes, aburridas o ambas y permitirme ser sorprendido; siempre y cuando estos otros modelos cumplan ciertos estándares de calidad, de otra forma serán rechazados... 

Una de estas marcas es Welly, registrada como Welly Die Casting Factory Limited, una compañía con sede en Hong Kong, pero sus fábricas están localizadas en la Provincia de Guandong en China Continental. 

Debo admitir que cuando supe qué tanto ha estado Welly en el mercado del diecast, quedé impactado: la compañía empezó operaciones oficialmente en 1980 (algunos reclaman que fue en 1979); honestamente, pensé que esta marca era mucho más reciente, ¡pero tiene más de 30 años fabricando modelos en diecast!

Fue algo desconcertante saber esto, simplemente porque otras marcas han logrado mayor visibilidad y representatividad entre coleccionistas y la industria misma en un espacio de tiempo más corto, pero quizás la popularidad o las inversiones extravagantes en campañas de mercadeo para incrementar la presencia de marca no son el negocio de Welly. 

Puedo ver que esta marca maneja un perfil más bien bajo y probablemente, hubo un tiempo cuando fue externalizada por otras marcas de diecast bien conocidas como satélite para fabricación, una práctica extendida en este segmento; en estos acuerdos de externalización, fabricantes como Welly y otros no pueden poner su nombre en los productos externalizados luego, es muy difícil saber acerca de su existencia. 

Esa es una etapa normal para cualquier fabricante de diecast, especialmente aquellos ubicados en China, Hong Kong, Tailandia o Malasia, pero hoy en día Welly ofrece sus propios productos, en varias escalas como 1:18, 1:24, 1:32, 1:38, 1:43, 1:60 y 1:87, aunque la externalización todavía debe estar en vigor; su dinero es bien invertido en licencias de diferentes fabricantes de autos y por eso es que esta compañía tiene una amplia variedad de modelos. 

En mi patria Colombia, solo están disponibles modelos en escalas 1:24 y 1:60 de Welly; en el primer caso, a través de los canales regulares de distribución, principalmente tiendas por departamentos y minoristas, pero modelos en escala 1:60 son más difíciles de encontrar y debes recurrir a papelerías, tiendas especializadas en diecast y el mercado secundario. 

Fui afortunado de encontrar este modelo hace más de 2 años en un supermercado, un lugar muy improbable, junto con el otro modelo de Welly en mi colección, presentado en la sesión de fotos y puedes encontrar su reseña respectiva aquí. 

Pertenece a la Serie Cool Collection también y tiene la misma presentación del modelo anteriomente reseñado, un clamshell muy básico y pequeño con una tarjeta delgada, impresa a todo color; vale la pena mencionar que el precio para estos modelos ha ido aumentando a través del tiempo y hoy en día fácilmente duplica aquel de un Hot Wheels / Matchbox regular, pero ya que ofrece la calidad de un diecast de la categoría Adulta, es justificable y está todavía por debajo de lo que debes pagar por un modelo equivalente de líneas Adultas hecho por las marcas de Mattel... 

El modelo tiene carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico negro, con un nivel de detalle y acabados muy satisfactorio; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en azul eléctrico con acabado de escarcha metálica, complementado por tampos y/o calcomanías precisos para las luces delanteras, parrilla frontal, logo de corbatín Chevrolet al frente, los emblemas 1500 y Z71 sobre los paneles laterales, así como los emblemas Chevrolet y Silverado sobre la portezuela trasera. 

Las ventanas son transparentes y recibieron un tampo negro al frente, con limpiabrisas moldeados (algo que difícilmente vez en modelos de Hot Wheels o Matchbox); los interiores en blanco son mejores que aquellos hechos por marcas más populares en este segmento y eso es loable; las ruedas son multiparte con diseño de rimes deportivos 5 Spoke en plateado, llantas en caucho labradas y fue hecho en China...

I like to think that there is always some kind of story behind the selection of names for a given product, just because it’s much more than just labeling things, a name is the primal link between products and people (or between things and people, in a deep sense); albeit that’s not always the case and there are people unaware of the importance of this matter... 

In the south-western side of the United States, more precisely in the eastern edge of Orange County, California, circumscribed in the Santa Ana Mountains, at the boundaries of Cleveland National Forest, there is a rugged region that includes a canyon and a small city sharing a particular name... 

Silverado is a place full of history, literally, the walls of this canyon preserve a lot of fossils of clams, snails and small-shelled, squid-like creatures, because there was a time when this region was covered by the sea. 

The first inhabitants of these lands were Native Americans and there were several different tribes around, who found dense forests, where oaks, sycamores, mountain ashes and pines were the most prominent trees. 

Later, in this area there were land grants for spanish and mexican people, indeed the spanish presence in the region was important, with several colonies and they were responsible largely for the decimation of the indigenous people, since they brought with them various diseases; not to mention that California was once part of Mexico, until the american invasion, facilitated by an unstable and weak mexican goverment. 

In addition to different conflicts, the region of Silverado underwent also the effects of two successive mining fevers, the first one related with silver and the other with coal, and the stories go on, but I wonder if these elements were taken into account at the time of selecting the name for a line of pickup trucks made by Chevrolet since 1999...

Because yeah, it was named after this place, a California historical landmark and, in fact, Silverado is a compound word, part English and part Spanish, go figure!... 

Living tied to a single brand of collectibles is not my idea of enjoying or get the most of this hobby, that’s why I’m usually exploring other manufacturers, out of the overwhelming popular brands, which sometimes are disappointing, boring or both and let myself being surprised; provided that those other models meet certain quality standards, otherwise they will be turned down... 

One of these brands is Welly, registered as Welly Die Casting Factory Limited, a company headquartered in Hong Kong, but its factories are located at the Guandong Province in Mainland China. 

I must admit that when I knew how long Welly has been in the diecast market, I was shocked: the company began operations officially in 1980 (some claim it was in 1979); honestly, I thought this brand was much more recent, but it has over 30 years manufacturing diecast models!

It was kind of baffling to know this, just because other brands have achieved more visibility and representativeness among collectors and the industry itself in a shorter time span, but perhaps popularity or outlandish investments in marketing campaigns to increase brand presence are not Welly’s business. 

I can see that this brand manage a rather low profile and probably, there was a time when it was outsourced by other well known diecast brands as a satellite for manufacturing, a widespread practice in this segment; in these outsourcing agreements, manufacturers like Welly and others cannot put their name in the outsourced products so, it’s very difficult to know about their existence. 

That’s a normal stage for any diecast manufacturer, specially those located in China, Hong Kong, Thailand or Malaysia, but nowadays Welly offers its own products, in several scales like 1:18, 1:24, 1:32, 1:38, 1:43, 1:60 and 1:87, albeit outsourcing must be still in force; its money is well invested in licenses from different carmakers and that’s why this company have a wide variety of models. 

In my homeland Colombia, only models in 1:24 and 1:60 scales by Welly are available; in the first case, through the regular channels of distribution, mainly retail or department stores, but models in 1:60 scale are more difficult to find and you must resort to stationery stores, specialized diecast stores or the secondary market. 

I was fortunate to find this model more than 2 years ago in a supermarket, a very unlikely place, along with the other model by Welly in my collection, featured in the photo shoot and you can find its respective review here. 

It belongs to the Cool Collection Series too and it has the same presentation of the model previously reviewed, a very basic and small clamshell with a thin card, printed in full color; it’s worth mentioning that the price for these models has been increasing over time and nowadays easily duplicate that of a regular Hot Wheels / Matchbox, but since it offers the quality of a diecast from the Adult category, it’s justifiable and it’s still below what you must pay for an equivalent model of the Adult lines made by the brands of Mattel... 

The model has diecast body and black plastic chassis, with a very satisfying level of detail and finishes; the paint job was made in electric blue with metal flake finishing, complemented by accurate tampos and/or decals for the head lights, front grille, Chevrolet bow tie logo in front, the 1500 and Z71 emblems on the side panels, as well as the Chevrolet and Silverado emblems on the tailgate. 

The windows are clear and received a black tampo in front, with molded wipers (something you hardly see in models by Hot Wheels or Matchbox); the interiors in white are better that those made by more popular brands in this segment and that’s laudable; the wheels are multipart with sporty 5 Spoke rims design in silver, styled rubber tires and it was made in China...
