Los Mustangs y las Cobras no se la llevan demasiado bien en condiciones normales, quiero decir, las Cobras en realidad no se la llevan demasiado bien con nada más, simplemente porque la última cosa que quieres es una Cobra siseando cerca de ti, a menos que estemos hablando del mundo automotor... 

Solo imagina la fortaleza y agilidad de un caballo indómito, el Mustang, uno que una vez fue domesticado, pero ahora vaga libre, unido a la fiereza y letalidad de la Cobra: suena como una combinación grandiosa y una amenaza muy seria también... 

No sé si esta clase de ideas deambulaban por las cabezas de aquellos involucrados en este proyecto conjunto entre Ford y Shelby, quizás, quizás no, pero lo que si sé con certeza es que estas personas querían "estampar" un caractér mucho más fuerte (o más bien rudo) en un modelo que tenía espacio para desarrollos novedosos y mejoras. 

Puedes sentir que ellos querían crear una especie de auto "no dócil" y leyendo acerca de las experiencias de dueños, eso fue precisamente lo que consiguieron, particularmente durante los dos primeros años de esta fructífera relación, entre un caballo y una serpiente, por así decirlo... 

Mi invitado para esta publicación es la segunda interpretación de un coche que agita pasiones entre los aficionados y coleccionistas de carros por igual: el Ford Shelby (Mustang) GT350 de 1966, un Coupé 2 Puertas Fastback Compacto Pony Car / Muscle Car / Auto Deportivo, uno que siguió el éxito de su hermano del 65, con algunas modificaciones. 

Si estamos hablando sobre años clave para el Mustang, 1965 y 1966 definitivamente califican en ese sentido, porque la esencia Pony Car fue exhaustivamente respetada y el coche tenía una relación peso / potencia bastante favorable, probablemente aún mejor que en años posteriores. 

Si bien su motor de 289 pulgadas cúbicas no era ni de cerca tan poderoso como el mamut de 427 pulgadas cúbicas introducido para 1967, su tamaño y peso más que compensaban esta "debilidad", por eso es que el modelo del 66 fue usado como base, junto con el del 65, para los autos de carreras GT350R más buscados (de los cuales puedes leer aquí y también fue incluído en la sesión de fotos). 

Sin embargo, para 1966, el GT350 recibió asientos traseros plegables, transmisión automática (opcional), ventana lateral trasera en plexiglass, a diferencia del Mustang GT regular con ventana de vidrio (en lugar de la persiana del modelo del 65), inductores de aire en los paneles de los cuartos traseros, tacómetro Cobra, timón de lujo recubierto de madera y otras amenidades, no demasiadas así el carro podía mantener la mayor parte de su brutalidad. 

En realidad, no muchos de estos GT350 fueron hechos, las cifras son las siguientes: 1.368 GT350; 1.001 GT350H (modelos Hertz); 4 GT350 Dragsters; 4 GT350 convertibles y 11 GT350S (Supercargados por Paxton), haciendo un total de 2.388 unidades. 

Entonces encontrar uno de ellos en condición pristina y original es bastante difícil y los precios están actualmente comenzando apenas por debajo de US$100.000 luego tal vez no es precisamente el auto deportivo asequible para la clase media, ya no... 

Estar en el momento correcto, en el lugar correcto, con las personas correctas, no podría resaltar lo suficiente cuán importantes son estos tres factores para los coleccionistas; la mayoría de personas, incluyendo simples compradores, dirían que esto es solo un asunto de suerte, pero la suerte no tiene nada que ver con eso, es más bien un asunto de intuición y eso es algo que tú solo desarrollas a través del conocimiento y la experiencia... 

Cuando estos tres factores se unen, como coleccionista no estás adivinando, estás considerando las probabilidades y luego tomando una decisión consciente. 

Cuando encontré este set al cual pertenece mi invitado para esta reseña, estaba en el momento correcto: ya sabía acerca de Shelby Collectibles porque tuve la oportunidad de conseguir unos pocos modelos de esta marca y fui gratamente sorprendido por la calidad consistente de sus productos, 2012 era todavía un buen momento para conseguirlos a precios asequibles, porque para 2013, la compañía de diecast estaba ya fuera del negocio. 

Estaba también en el lugar correcto y con las personas correctas: conseguí este set en el mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador, hace un poquitín más de 8 años, él tiene una tienda especializada de coleccionables y juguetes, aquí en mi ciudad natal y tenía uno de estos sets para la venta cuando fui a visitarlo. 

Tengo que admitir que no hay muchas tiendas locales con el surtido de productos que él se las arregla para ofrecer, a precios asequibles encima de eso y me ha ayudado a conseguir muchos artículos para mi colección, los cuales son prácticamente imposibles de conseguir aquí. 

De nuevo, algunas personas podrían decir que eso es exactamente lo que muchas tiendas allá afuera ofrecen, pero una cosa es confiar en un slogan agradable pero tal vez falso de una tienda que no conoces y otra bastante diferente saber por experiencia que puedes conseguir algo para tu colección, a precio razonable, una y otra vez, a través de alguien honesto, responsable, que te asesora y con el cual puedes compartir conocimiento, porque el o ella son coleccionistas también... 

Estafadores, acaparadores / especuladores, vendedores deshonestos abundan, toma algún tiempo, conocimiento e intuición identificar esa clase de gente y también para encontrar personas confiables: si sabes lo que estás buscando, no hay lugar para el azar, por eso es que esto no tiene nada que ver con suerte, ¿correcto?... 

Justo como otros productos de Shelby Collectibles, una marca de la categoría Premium, ofrece construcción completa en diecast, apertura de capó (con bahía del motor detallada) y puertas, insertos plásticos para los faros, parrilla y bómper frontales, así como bómper trasero, que incluye las luces de cola, la proporción es correcta y el nivel de detalle es bastante satisfactorio. 

El trabajo de pintura fue hecho en un color muy inusual: rojo oscuro, casi burgundí, el cual es diferente a una de las opciones reales de fábrica para el GT350 del 66, Candyapple Red, pero supongo que Shelby puede jugar un poquitín con sus propios productos, está complementado por una decoración con tampos y/o calcomanías, incluyendo un par de franjas de carrera que van a través de la carrocería en Azul Guardsman y Blanco Wimbledon, las molduras de las ventanas y limpiabrisas, parrilla y luces de señal frontales, pines del capó, emblemas G.T. 350 de los paneles inferiores, molduras de las puertas, luces de cola y tapa de combustible; el chasis recibió pintura plateada con acabado de escarcha metálica y el ensamblado se hizo con tornillos en vez de remaches. 

Los interiores fueron trabajados en negro, agradablemente detallados como siempre; las ruedas multiparte presentan una reproducción muy precisa del diseño de rimes real Shelby Aluminum 10 Spoke en cromado, llantas en caucho labradas y fue hecho en China...

Mustangs and Cobras don’t get along too well in normal conditions, I mean, Cobras actually don’t get along too well with anything else, just because the last thing you want is a Cobra hissing close to you, unless we are talking about the automotive world... 

Just imagine the strength and agility of an untamed horse, the Mustang, one that was once domesticated, but now roam free, joined to the fierceness and lethality of the Cobra: sounds like a great blend and a serious threat too... 

I don’t know if this kind of ideas roamed around the heads of those involved in this joint-venture between Ford and Shelby, perhaps, perhaps not, but what I do know for sure is that these people wanted to "stamp" a much more burly (or rather badass) character in a model that had room for novel developments and improvements. 

You can feel that they wanted to create a sort of "not docile" car and reading about the experiences from owners, that was precisely what they got, particularly during the first two years of this fruitful relationship, between a horse and a snake, so to say... 

My guest for this publication is the second rendition of a car that stir passions among car buffs and car collectors alike: the 1966 Ford Shelby (Mustang) GT350, a Compact 2-Door Fastback Coupe Pony Car / Muscle Car / Sports Car, one that followed the success of its ’65 brother, with some modifications. 

If we are talking about key years for the Mustang, 1965 and 1966 definitely qualify in that sense, because the Pony Car essence was thoroughly respected and the car had a quite favorable power / weight ratio, probably even better than in later years. 

While its 289 cubic inches engine was not nearly as powerful as the 427 cubic inches mammoth introduced for 1967, its size and weight more than compensate this "weakness", that’s why the ’66 model was used as basis, along with the ’65, for the most sought after GT350R racing cars (of which you can read here and it was also included in the photoshoot). 

However, for 1966, the GT350 received fold-down backseats, automatic transmission (option), rear side window in plexiglass, unlike the regular Mustang GT with glass window (instead of the louver of the ’65 model), functional rear quarter panels scoops, Cobra tachometer, deluxe wood rimmed steering wheel and other amenities, not too many so the car could keep most of its brutality. 

Not many of these GT350 were made actually, figures are the following: 1,368 GT350; 1,001 GT350H (Hertz models); 4 GT350 Dragsters; 4 GT350 convertible and 11 GT350S (Supercharged by Paxton), making a total of 2,388 units. 

Then finding one of them in pristine and original condition is quite difficult and the prices are currently starting barely below US$100,000 so maybe it’s not precisely the affordable sports car for the middle class it was once, not anymore... 

Being at the right time, in the right place, with the right people, I couldn’t highlight enough how important are these three factors for collectors; most people, including simple buyers, would say that it’s just a matter of luck, but luck doesn’t have anything to do with that, it’s rather a matter of intuition and that’s something you only develop through knowledge and experience... 

When these three factors come together, as collector you are not guessing, you’re considering the odds and then making a conscious decision. 

When I found the set to which belongs my guest for this review, I was at the right time: I already knew about Shelby Collectibles because I had the chance to get a few models by this brand and I was pleasantly surprised by the consistent quality of its products, 2012 was still a good moment to get them at affordable prices, because for 2013, the diecast company was already out of business. 

I was also at the right place, with the right people: I got this set in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, a little more than 8 years ago, he has a specialized collectibles and toy store, here in my hometown and he had one of these sets available for sale when I went to visit him. 

I have to admit that there are not many local stores with the assortment of products he manages to offer, at affordable prices on top of that and he has helped me to get many items for my collection, which are virtually impossible to get here. 

Again, some people could say that this is exactly what many stores out there offer, but one thing is to trust a nice but maybe fake slogan of a store you don’t know and other pretty different to know by experience that you can get something for your collection, at a reasonable price, time and time again, through someone honest, responsible, who advises you and with whom you can share knowledge, because he or she are collectors as well... 

Scammers, hoarders / scalpers, dishonest sellers they abound, it takes some time, knowledge and intuition to identify that kind of people and also to find trustworthy people: if you know what you’re looking for, there is no place for random, that’s why it has nothing to do with luck, right?... 

Just like other products of Shelby Collectibles, a brand of the Premium category, this model offers full diecast construction, opening hood (with detailed engine bay) and doors, plastic inserts for the headlights, front grille and bumper, as well as rear bumper, that includes the tail lights, the proportion is correct and the level of detail quite satisfying. 

The paint job was made in a very unusual color: dark red, almost burgundy, which is different to one of the actual factory options for the ’66 GT350, Candyapple Red, but I guess Shelby can play a little bit with their own products, it’s complemented by a decoration with tampos and/or decals, including a pair of racing stripes that run through the body in Guardsman Blue and Wimbledon White, the windows moldings and wipers, front grille and signal lights, hood pins, G.T. 350 emblems of the rocker panels, doors moldings, tail lights and gas cap; the chassis received silver paint with metal flake finishing and the assembling was made with screws instead of rivets. 

The interiors were worked in black, nicely detailed as always; the multipart wheels feature the a very accurate reproduction of the actual Shelby Aluminum 10 Spoke rims design in chrome, styled rubber tires and it was made in China...
