Me pregunto, ¿cuántas veces has leído en este blog mío, quiero decir, en caso que seas un visitante habitual y lector desde luego, que los buenos tiempos de Matchbox como marca de autos de juguete no están en el presente y probablemente tampoco en el futuro, sino en el pasado?...
Déjame decirte: han sido muchas veces y no es un divagación mía sin fundamento, NO: he estado presentando en varias publicaciones, al menos desde principios de 2017, evidencia concreta con respecto a este asunto y pienso que es lo correcto por hacer, cuando ves tanta gente, ya sean promotores de marca o personas malinformados / desinformadas haciéndose pasar por coleccionistas, diciendo que Matchbox está en la actualidad en su apogeo...
Más aún, en una reseña que puedes leer aquí, compartí una anécdota acerca de mi primer encuentro con un coche de juguete de Matchbox, cuando era un niño y recuerdo vívidamente cuán detallado y realista era esta pequeña maravilla, basada en una Ford F-100 de 1967.
Aunque hay algunas cosas que no mencioné en esa publicación anterior, por ejemplo: por las características generales que tenía, hoy en día puedo decir con seguridad que el modelo era originalmente el Wildlife Truck (MB57), ofrecido entre 1973 y 1981, era un modelo Superfast (este artículo particular no fue ofrecido con las ruedas regulares anteriores, las de la era pre-Superfast); sin embargo, no tenía el toldo transparente, tampoco el león plástico más bien pequeño incluido en el platón.
Precisamente, en la camioneta pickup de juguete de uno de mis amigos de infancia, el platón era plano, a diferencia de la otra camioneta de juguete basada en la misma pickup real y llamada Kennel Truck (#50), la que tenía un tabique en cruz moldeado con el platón e incluía cuatro perros en plástico, agradablemente moldeados: esta última fue lanzada originalmente unos pocos años antes de la Wildlife Truck, en 1969.
Esa camioneta de juguete de mi amigo estaba ligeramente abollada y estaba pintada descuidadamente en negro, como algo que un niño podía hacer y bueno, décadas más tarde aprendí que ni la Kennel Truck, ni la Wildlife Truck fueron ofrecidas en negro, confirmando mis sospechas que este "trabajo de pintura" fue hecho en casa.
Ahora, con los ojos de un niño, realmente admiré el atractivo carro de juguete que mi amigo tenía, por eso es que dije: ‘recuerdo vívidamente cuán detallado y realista era esta pequeña maravilla’, simplemente porque la calidad de este producto antiguo de los 70s, en la forma de auto de juguete, era tan evidente, que incluso un niño podía notarlo.
No hay necesidad de decir que mi buena percepción sobre estos viejos coches de juguete como coleccionista adulto, no ha cambiado, por el contrario, ha sido reafirmada y ahora los aprecio aún más.
Con todo, de alguna forma Mattel, la dueña actual de esta marca inglesa y sus ejecutivos, especialmente en el Departamento de Relaciones Públicas / Mercadeo, creen que los coleccionistas adultos son ciegos y/o idiotas, que nosotros no podemos comparar los productos antiguos con los actuales, sacando nuestras propias conclusiones y en consecuencia, prefiriendo por lejos los carros de juguetes más antiguos hechos por Matchbox...
Quiero decir, estas personas creen incluso que nos tragaremos fácilmente la enorme mentira que los productos que la marca naranja de Mattel desarrolla hoy en día, son mucho mejores que los viejos y/o que la marca misma está en una "era dorada", "apogeo" o lo que sea, ¿en serio?...
El punto es muy simple: la Matchbox antigua es sustancialmente mejor que la nueva, prácticamente en cualquier aspecto que quieras considerar: cantidad de diecast, realismo, calidad de moldes y acabados, nivel de detalle, partes extra, características de movimiento / apertura, distribución comprehensiva y eficiente, precios equitativos, etc., (algo que ya expliqué un poquitín más a profundidad en una reseña que puedes leer aquí)...
Con esta declaración no quiero dar a entender que todos y cada uno de los vehículos de juguete en diecast desarrollados por Matchbox en el pasado eran perfectos, NO, pero la vasta mayoría de productos que esta marca solía desarrollar, son dignos de elogio, porque aún teniendo en mente las limitaciones inherentes a los autos de juguete en diecast, tienen más mérito en conjunto que la aproximaciones plásticas que esta marca desarrolla hoy, por tanto, los productos más antiguos ofrecen mejor relación calidad / precio.
Y el mismo principio aplica cuando comparas las versiones más viejas y más recientes de los lanzamientos contemporáneos, a pesar de lo que ha sido publicitado por campañas de mercadeo con motivo del Aniversario 70º de esta marca o a través de la plataforma Mattel Creations.
A propósito, ese es el caso con mi invitado para esta reseña, basado en el Ford Taurus Interceptor Policíaco Sedán (FPIS, por sus siglas en inglés) Paquete para Trabajo Severo / Unidad de Policía para el Cumplimiento de la Ley de 2010 - 2013, un Auto de Policía de Tamaño Completo 4 Puertas Sedán / Saloon (Ford Police Interceptor) y explicaré por qué...
Si DIOS permite, habrá tiempo para hablar acerca del coche real en una publicación futura, pero en este momento me voy a enfocar en mi invitado, el cual conseguí a través del mercado primario, para variar, en una tienda minorista de cadena local, hace más o menos 7 años, es decir, 2 años después de su lanzamiento original, lo que lo hace un hallazgo muy inusual en mi patria.
Es parte del 5-Pack / Box-Set Matchbox On a Mission / Mission Force: Police Series de 2014 y ya presenté un par de helicópteros, de los cuales puedes leer aquí, incluidos en uno de estos sets especiales que ofrecen artículos de diferentes Líneas: aeronaves y carros de juguete, los primeros habitualmente más caros, por eso la diferencia de precio (25% adicional en promedio) con los 5-Packs regulares.
Ahora, este auto de juguete, llamado simplemente Ford Police Interceptor, fue lanzado en 2011 como parte de la Línea Principal (categoría Regular) de Matchbox, ha tenido al menos 23 iteraciones, incluyendo variaciones y hasta aquí, nunca ha sido parte de ninguna Línea en la categoría Adulta; en 2017 este artículo fue retrabajado y justo como es la costumbre, particularmente con la marca naranja de Mattel, el propósito fue reducir costos, ¡qué novedad!...
Tiene carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico negro; el nivel de detalle es apenas bueno, considerando el tamaño de este coche de juguete, incluso el chasis recibió algo de amor y fueron incluidos los espejos retrovisores laterales, pero el molde de la carrocería no incluyó los pilares B: otra expresión de las odiosas políticas de recorte de costos de Mattel, que perjudican la apariencia.
Con respecto al trabajo de pintura, fue hecho en blanco, con acabado brillante, complementado por una decoración con tampos, solo sobre los paneles laterales, en plateado, rojo, negro y azul cian, realista, aunque no está basada en un vehículo real; tuve que añadir algunos detalles pintados para las luces frontales y de cola, en plateado, rojo metalizado y cobrizo.
Los interiores fueron trabajados en negro, con un nivel de detalle decente, el molde incluye la barra de empuje frontal, lo cual es un toque muy bonito; las ventanas son transparentes y aquí es donde puedes notar una característica adicional en este artículo: un inserto plástico para la barra de luces plana, que con el retrabajo se convirtió en parte del molde de las ventanas.
Obviamente la anterior configuración, usada en mi invitado, era mucho mejor, porque podías tener un color diferente para la barra de luces y más realismo en el carro de juguete, también en este caso, incluí toques pintados.
Esa es la clase de detalles que añaden valor y encanto a un auto de juguete de otra manera simple y en algunos aspectos soso: el equipo de diseño en Matchbox encantado incluye estos extras, pero aquellos que quieren complacer a los accionistas, es decir, la gente que escatima con los costos, los altos ejecutivos, los removerán encantados con el fin de ahorrar dinero, sin importarles el impacto negativo en el producto.
Porque honestamente esos ejecutivos en Mattel que toman las decisiones más influyentes, les importa un bledo los coleccionistas adultos y nunca les importaron (solo al equipo de diseño les importan, pero sus esfuerzos no son suficientes).
Entonces, esos ejecutivos contratan equipos de mercadeo (incluyendo promotores de marca por supuesto) para mentir por ellos y publicitar "cuán grandioso es lo que Mattel y sus marcas de coches de juguete ofrecen".
Sin embargo, el producto no miente y con el tiempo la mella que esta administración avara está haciendo en la reputación de una otrora buena marca de carros de juguete de Inglaterra, se está haciendo cada vez más grande...
Las ruedas plásticas presentan diseño de rimes 6 Spokes Sport, con acabado cromado, que lucen increíblemente bien en esta patrulla de policía de juguete, aunque difícilmente verías algo como esto en un vehículo real de este tipo y, de hecho, es uno de los dos diseños de rimes usados para este modelo (el otro es el Ringed Disc, que luce más realista); finalmente, fue hecho en Tailandia...

I wonder, how many times have you read in this blog of mine, I mean, in case you’re an usual visitor and reader of course, that the good times of Matchbox as toy cars brand are not in the present and probably neither in the future, but in the past?...
Let me tell you: it has been many times and it’s not an unsubstantiated rambling of mine, NO: I have been featuring in several publications, at least since early 2017, concrete evidence regarding this matter and I think it’s the right thing to do, when you see so many people, either brand promoters or uninformed / misinformed people posing as collectors, saying that Matchbox is currently in its heyday...
Even more, in a review you can read here, I shared an anecdote about my first encounter with a Matchbox toy car, when I was a kid and I remember vividly how detailed and realistic was that small marvel, based on a 1967 Ford F-100.
There are some things though that I didn’t mention in this previous publication, for instance: by the general features it had, nowadays I can say safely that the model was originally the Wildlife Truck (MB57), offered between 1973 and 1981, it was a Superfast model (this particular item was not offered with the previous regular wheels, the ones from the pre-Superfast era); however, it didn’t have the clear canopy, neither the rather small plastic lion included in the bed.
Precisely, in the pickup toy truck of one of my childhood friends, the bed was flat, unlike the other toy truck based on the same actual pickup and named Kennel Truck (#50), the one that had a partition in cross molded with the bed and it included four plastic dogs, nicely molded: this latter was released originally a few years before the Wildlife Truck, in 1969.
That toy truck of my friend was slightly battered and it was sloppily painted in black, like something a kid could do and well, decades later I learned that nor the Kennel Truck, neither the Wildlife Truck were offered in black, confirming my suspicions that this "paint job" was homemade.
Now, with the eyes of a kid, I really admired the appealing toy car that my friend had, that’s why I said: ‘I remember vividly how detailed and realistic was that tiny marvel’, just because the quality of this old 70’s product, in the form of toy car, was so evident, that even a child could notice it.
Needless to say that my good perception about these old toy cars as adult collector, has not changed, conversely, it has been reaffirmed and now I appreciate them even more.
Yet, somehow Mattel, the current owner of this English brand and its executives, specially in the Public Relationships / Marketing Department, believe that adult collectors are blind and/or idiots, that we cannot compare the old products with the current ones, drawing our own conclusions and accordingly, preferring by far the older toy cars made by Matchbox...
I mean, these people even believe that we will swallow easily the huge lie that the products the orange brand of Mattel develops nowadays, are much better that the old ones and/or that the brand itself is in a "golden age", "heyday" or whatever, really?...
The point is very simple: the old Matchbox is substantially better than the new one, virtually in any aspect you want to consider: amount of diecast, realism, quality of molds and finishes, level of detail, extra parts, moving / opening features, comprehensive and efficient distribution, fair prices, etc., (something I already explained a bit more in depth in a review you can read here)...
With this statement I don’t mean that every single toy vehicle in diecast developed by Matchbox in the past was flawless, NO, but the vast majority of products this brand used to develop, are worthy of praise, because even bearing in mind the limitations inherent to diecast toy cars, they have more merit as a whole than the plastic approximations this brand manufactures today, hence, the older products offer better value for money.
And the same principle applies when you compare the older and more recent versions of contemporary releases, despite what has been publicized by marketing campaigns on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of this brand or through the Mattel Creations platform.

If GOD allows, there will be time to talk about the actual car in a future publication, but at this moment I’m going to focus on my guest, which I got it through the primary market, for a change, in a local chain retail store, pretty much 7 years ago, i.e., 2 years after its original release, which makes it a very unusual find in my homeland.
It’s part of the 2014 Matchbox On a Mission / Mission Force: Police Series 5-Pack / Box-Set and I already featured a pair of helicopters, of which you can read here, included in one of these special sets that offer items from different Lines: aircraft and toy cars, the first ones usually more expensive, hence the price difference (25% additional in average) with regular 5-Packs.
Now, this toy car, called simply Ford Police Interceptor, was released in 2011 as part of the Mainline (Regular category) of Matchbox, it has had at least 23 iterations, including variations and so far, it has never been part of any Line in the Adult category; in 2017 this item was retooled and just as is the custom, particularly with the orange brand of Mattel, the purpose was to reduce production costs, what a novelty!...
It has diecast body and plastic chassis in black; the overall level of detail is barely good, considering the size of this toy car, even the chassis received some love and the side rearview mirrors were included, but the mold of the body didn’t include the B pillars: another expression of the hateful costs-cutting policies of Mattel, that harm the appearance.
Regarding the paint job, it was made in white, with glossy finishing, complemented by a decoration with tampos, only on the side panels, in silver, red, black and cyan blue, realistic, albeit not based on an actual vehicle; I had to add some painted details for the front and tail lights, in silver, metallic red and copper.
The interiors were worked in black, with a decent level of detail, the mold includes the push bar in front, which is a very nice touch; the windows are clear and here is where you can notice an additional feature in this item: a plastic insert for the flat light bar, that with the retool became part of the windows mold.
Obviously the older configuration, used in my guest, was much better, because you could have a different color for the light bar and more realism in the toy car, also in this case, I included painted touches.
That’s the kind of details that add value and charm to an otherwise simple and in some aspects bland toy car: the design team at Matchbox gladly includes these extras, but those who want to please shareholders, i.e., the people who skimp on production costs, the top executives, will gladly remove them in order to save money, not caring about the negative impact on the product.
Because honestly those executive in Mattel who make the most influential decisions, don’t give a damn about adult collectors and never did (only the design team does, but their efforts are not enough).
Then, those executives hire marketing teams (including brand promoters of course) to lie for them and publicize "how great is what Mattel and its toy car brands offer".
However, the product don’t lie and over time the dent this greedy management is doing on the reputation of a once good toy cars brand of England, is getting increasingly bigger...
The plastic wheels feature 6 Spokes Sport rims design, with chrome finishing, that look incredibly good on this toy police patrol, although hardly you would see something like that in an actual vehicle of this kind and in fact, it’s one of the two rims design used for this model (the other one is the Ringed Disc, that looks more realistic); finally, it was made in Thailand...
