ENGLISH Normally, the continuity of certain brands in the automobile market entails several changes for them, some of these changes are just a matter of form, cosmetic, while others are deeper and involve the essence...
The evolution of Mini from a designation for certain models made by Austin and Morris, british carmakers, to a brand on its own, was already a big step; but not as big as what we are witnessing since 1994, when the Rover Group was acquired by BMW and most notably since 2000, when this group was splitted up and BMW retained the Mini brand...
The precedent of a reputed german car brand: BMW, giving a second breath to a british car brand: Mini, sounds for me like a strange reminiscense of what happened after the World War II, for at that time a representative of the british government decided to give a second chance to the bludgeoned Volkswagen carmaker (before it became a brand), when no other nation of the Allies wanted to do it.
Maybe it’s just me and I know that the specific circumstances are quite different in both cases, yet, in the essentials, you can see some unexpected coincidences, albeit the other way around, you got it, right? =PPPPP...
The point is that the hand of BMW on Mini is more evident that ever since 2001, when the first "new" Mini was released and I can’t help but feeling that this case is pretty similar to what happened with the New Beetle.
Reinvent automotive icons is always a double-edged weapon for car manufacturers, mainly because it’s impossible to reproduce not only the style, but also the "experience" of certain vehicles, when the people themselves who used to own them have changed, with the passage of time.
So, the usual approach for this kind of projects and also the most sensible, is to focus on the new generations who are going to use these vehicles in the end and connect them with the original vehicle through key elements in the design.
In a certain sense, the current Mini or "BMW" Mini is not a Mini anymore; I mean, the original Mini was a spartan ultracompact 2-door hatchback coupe, created for the frugal 60s: space-saving without sacrificing habitability, fuel-economizer and yet offering a fun driving (pretty much like a kart), but the most remarkable thing is: its huge attitude, that makes contrast with its tiny size!...
The current Mini Cooper S Countryman, on the other hand, is a subcompact (or compact, depending on the market) 4-door crossover, that almost duplicate the size of its predecessor, offers a rather luxurious and roomy cabin, it’s dressed as a SUV, features unthinkable for the original Mini and yet, the overall design recalls the past in a particular way, being also quite successful in terms of sales!...
I’m starting another stage in my adventure through this hobby, something I briefly mentioned in a recent review, referring to this as "a return to my roots" as a collector and those who have followed my blog since the beginning will know what I mean, but others will need some clues...
If you’re a recent visitor or maybe you have been visiting this blog since late 2012, your first impression is that this is just another blog of a diecast lover, but in a sense you’re wrong.
I’m a collector in the broad sense of the word, which means among other things, that in fact my first flirtations with the world of collectionism were not through the diecast scale replicas of vehicles.
When I got my first diecast models, I already had more than 3 years of experience as a collector of other kind of stuff, that gradually will be featured here again so, my approach on the diecast world is different to what you find in the average collectors of these mini replicas.
One thing I certainly don’t share with them, is their loyalty (in some cases exaggerated, even sickly) for certain diecast brand or brands, regardless of what they offer; my loyalty is with quality, design, realism and great value for my money: a brand doesn’t mean anything to me, if it’s not accompanied, as minimum, by the features previously mentioned.
Kyosho is not the kind of brand that began manufacturing toy cars for kids and later decided to entice adult collectors with virtually the same molds, in many cases, upgraded with some extra features although retaining much of their general appearance and appealing to nostalgia, NO (I’m talking to you Hot Wheels / Matchbox / Mattel).
I’m not saying that the approach previously mentioned is completely wrong, only extremely overrated, but Kyosho offers a product for the current serious collector, who is more trenchant with accuracy and is not easily impressed by an eccentric paint job or things like that.
The model I’m introducing in this publication is part of the 2012 BMW & Mini - Minicar Collection, a premium series including 8 models (6 BMW and 2 Mini), with three variations each one, this Cooper S Countryman is offered also in red and dark blue.
Since I already have a nice version of the original Mini Cooper, included in the photo shoot, by one of those brands focused in nostalgia and that obviously is not in the same scale, I thought it was a great idea to get something that represents the Mini for the 21st century, made by a brand for the current adult collector.
I got it with the help of a friend, fellow collector and importer more than 3 years ago; it’s a perfect complement for my growing selection of SUVs and one that is very distinctive.
It has diecast body and black plastic chassis, the level of detail and finishes are exactly what you expect from Kyosho; the glossy black paint job that gives it a luxurious and sleek feeling, is complemented by several tampos and/or decals for the front grille, Mini Insignia on the hood and tailgate, door handles, some moldings, tail lights and exhaust system in the chassis, in silver and matte black.
As usual, there are plastic inserts for the front and tail lights, as well as for the side rearview mirrors; the interiors were worked in black, very accurate, the wheels are multipart, featuring realistic 8 Spoke rims design in silver and styled rubber tires; it includes a display base in black, featuring the name of the model printed in golden, a special trading card printed in full color and it was made in China...
Ezr 1:1-6 "Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying: thus saith Cyrus king of Persia: the LORD GOD of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? his GOD be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD GOD of Israel, (he is the GOD,) which is in Jerusalem. And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of GOD that is in Jerusalem. Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit GOD had raised, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem. And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered."
SUV sure has gain much attention in recent years and especially in Singapore I saw a lot of SUV on the road and amount them, boarded many Grab / Uber SUV car. Having a big family, I would prefer a 7 seater car instead if I have the spare cash. Nevertheless, SUV has it own style and provided driver a taller view while on the road. I didn't know this car is a shared R&D between 2 companies till I saw the card. The sun roof is pretty cool. I personally think that Kyosho did a great job on the details of the model, like the sharp logo and tires threadings. For a 1/64 scale, I believed the model is slight bigger than those regular HW car models.
The fact that even the most luxurious and/or exotic car brands have made or are developing a SUV, is also a clear signal of the steady growing of this segment of the automotive market... BMW officially took the reins of Mini since 2001 and yeah, this SUV is a shared R&D and is a kind of "offbeat" variation of the original Mini !!!...
About the size/scale inconsistency you mentioned pal, I guess you were talking about the model by Hot Wheels, on the right of a pair of the latest pictures, because Kyosho is accurate regarding 1:64 scale, but with Hot Wheels that’s something you find only marginally; in fact, that green beauty by the blue brand of Mattel is 1:54 scale and if both models were faithful to 1:64 scale, the HW Mini would be almost half the size of the Cooper S Countryman by Kyosho, yet the latter is a compact/subcompact vehicle !!!... =D
With the CountryMan, the Mini isn't so mini anymore but apparently quote a lot of people especially women would love the CountryMan. If I can afford and be able to chose, I will still go to the tiny little Mini... maybe with the letter "S" on it coz "S" means "Sports" and that means its a little faster maybe LOL LOL LOL...
These two Minis are Cooper S so actually they are the performance oriented versions, offering a sport feeling, but the Countryman adds some basic off-road capabilities that expand its potential market... The original Mini is a sure winner because of its cuteness and surprisingly good performance bearing in mind its tiny engine... Obviously, I like them both, each one in a particular way due to their evident differences and I thought it was a great idea to put the old and the new, side by side, despite their disparity of scale, diecast category and their heterogeneous manufacturers (Kyosho and Hot Wheels respectively) !!!... =D

I’m a professional graphic designer and a restful collector, but above all: I’m someone who doesn’t take for granted anything, just because someone else says so. I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...
