Algunas veces todavía me pregunto por qué me gustan tanto los vehículos de la década de los 50s, hechos en y para el mercado de los Estados Unidos; quiero decir, nací décadas más tarde, pero de alguna forma siento alguna clase de lazo y definitivamente admiración por estos productos automotrices... 

Los vehículos existentes de esa era tienen ya entre 60 y 70 años de edad, prácticamente una vida y todavía están alrededor, recordándonos que los 50s trajeron a la vida muchos de los desarrollos automotrices más deseables, emblemáticos e influyentes hechos jamás... 

Pienso que mi formación y experiencia como diseñador gráfico profesional tiene mucho que ver con esta admiración que mencioné, porque desde un punto de vista de diseño, los 50s del siglo pasado representan un Renacimiento, que se extendió a la cultura global como un todo, algo que he planteado en publicaciones anteriores, un punto de contacto entre lo nuevo y lo viejo, de allí el carácter trascendente de esta década. 

Hay un sentido de atemporalidad arraigado profundamente en los productos que la industria ofreció en esa época, diseño e ingeniería hechas para durar, donde la calidad, practicidad y estilo iban de la mano: los vehículos son testimonios tangibles de esa Era Dorada. 

Precisamente, estoy introduciendo para esta reseña una de esas bellezas utilitarias de la buena vieja escuela: la GMC Serie S 100 (Blue Chip) de 1959 Cabina Regular Wideside (Fleetside) Platón Regular Custom, una Camioneta Pickup de Tamaño Completo 1/2 Tonelada Clase 1 para Trabajo Liviano, el último modelo producido para la legendaria línea Task Force. 

Mientras que la Serie Apache por Chevrolet y la Serie S 100 por GMC compartieron varios componentes de la carrocería y el chasis, como puedes esperar de dos productos de la misma compañía, hubo importantes diferencias en la fascia frontal y las plantas de poder disponibles para cada modelo. 

El frente de la GMC S 100 luce más audaz, más lujoso, barroco si quieres, probablemente inspirado por el frente de algunos Cadillacs, las molduras alrededor de la parrilla son más voluminosas y el emblema en la parte superior más grande y más elaborado. 

Los motores V8 de bloque pequeño para las camionetas pickup de trabajo liviano GMC eran suplidos por Pontiac u Oldsmobile y en términos generales, estos motores eran ligeramente más potentes que sus contrapartes Chevrolet, todo en acuerdo con la posición más alta de la marca GMC con respecto a esta última. 

No es precisamente fácil encontrar "en la espesura" una de estas camionetas pickup aquí en mi patria, si las Apaches de Chevrolet son más bien escasas en condiciones de funcionamiento, ni hablar de encontrar ejemplos inmaculados, las S 100 de GMC son una rareza, porque los productos GMC no tienen distribución oficial aquí, hasta donde sé, pero Chevrolet si. 

Si resulta que encuentras una, está ya sea en un estado realmente malo, machacada por el trabajo al cual fue sometida o pobremente restaurada, pero todavía puedes percibir la excelencia de su diseño antiguo pero relevante, incluso después de más de medio siglo... 

Tuve un encuentro más bien precoz con M2 Machines a finales de 2009 (como mencioné aquí), un punto cuando los coleccionistas locales de diecast en tamaños pequeños solo tenían ojos para marcas de autos de juguete, así que modelos a escala apropiados en 1:64 y similares fueron ignorados por las masas y apreciados únicamente por coleccionistas expertos... 

No descubrí M2 Machines por mí mismo, me fue presentada por un apreciado amigo mío, quien resulta ser coleccionista también y que fue lo suficientemente amable como para regalarme uno de sus modelos, el cual obviamente es parte de mi colección, perteneciente a la Serie Ground Pounders. 

Me encantó el nivel de detalle y excelentes acabados de ese modelo: una Chevy Nomad de 1957 y aún hoy la encuentro un producto sobresaliente, comparado con otros modelos de las categorías De Lujo y Premium los cuales llegué ha conocer después en mi jornada como coleccionista. 

Encontré muy interesante que los modelos de esta Serie (Ground Pounders) tenían las proporciones alteradas con el fin de lucir caricaturizados y me tomó algún tiempo darme cuenta que esto era un guiño a la marca con la cual los creadores de M2 Machines comenzaron: Muscle Machines y su línea principal de coches caricaturizados, indignantes pero divertidos. 

Más sobre mis impresiones acerca de M2 Machines y sus productos en conjunto en publicaciones futuras, pero ahora introduciré otro modelo grandioso de esta marca, basado en una camioneta pickup clásica, el cual conseguí en el mercado secundario, con la ayuda de otro amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador, hace un poquitín menos de 8 años. 

Pertenece a la Serie Auto-Lift 2-Pack de 2013, Lanzamiento 9, esta Serie incluye un elevador de carros de 4 Postes, completamente hecho en diecast luego es pesado, puedes fijar los modelos con tornillos al elevador y el elevador a la base de exhibición de la misma manera; debido a sus características y calidad general, este producto cumple los requerimientos para estar entre las categorías De Lujo y Premium, lo que habla muy bien de M2 Machines. 

El modelo ofrece construcción completa en diecast con gran nivel de detalle para su punto de precio, el cual particularmente en el caso de las camionetas pickup de esta marca, se está volviendo más y más alto con el tiempo, un poquitín demasiado, especialmente para los lanzamientos antiguos, como este. 

Este es, por cierto, un Modelo Chase, con acentos dorado cromado y dorado aquí y allá, de hecho solo una de las variaciones de modelos chase de M2 Machines, incluyendo Super Chases ofreciendo la aleación Zamac desnuda, cubierta por tampos y/o calcomanías de la decoración y una laca transparente para proteger este acabado. 

El trabajo de pintura fue hecho en un hermoso verde oliva con acabado metalizado y complementado por una decoración sobria con tampos y/o calcomanías sobre todos los paneles de la carrocería, en blanco, dorado, negro, rojo y amarillo, presentando un logo vintage de Hays Clutches & Flywheels sobre las puertas. 

Hay varios insertos plásticos para las molduras frontales de las luces, parrilla y bómperes, con acabado dorado cromado, el chasis fue pintado en dorado con acabados satinado / escarcha metálica. 

Ofrece apertura de capó y puertas, bahía del motor detallada y pintada, los interiores fueron bien detallados también, trabajados en un gris muy claro, con acentos pintados en negro, las ruedas multiparte ofrecen diseño de rimes realista 5 Slots con acabado dorado cromado, llantas en caucho labradas, delgadas al frente y muy anchas en la parte de atrás, para una pinta dragster (las llantas traseras son labradas también, lo cual no es tan apropiado para una dragster en realidad, pero en el modelo a escala no lucen mal) y fue hecha en China...

Sometimes I still wonder why I like so much vehicles from the decade of the 50s, made in and for the market of United States, I mean, I was born decades later, but somehow I feel some kind of tie and definitely admiration for these automotive products... 

The existing vehicles from that era are already between 60 and 70 years old, virtually a lifetime and they are still around, reminding us that the 50s brought to life many of the most desirable, emblematic and influential automotive developments ever made... 

I think that my training and experience as professional graphic designer have a lot to do with this admiration I mentioned, because from a design standpoint, the 50s of the last century represent a Renaissance, which extended to the global culture as a whole, something I have posed in previous publications, a point of contact between the new and the old, hence the transcendent character of that decade. 

There is a sense of timelessness deeply rooted in the products that the industry offered at that time, design and engineering made to last, where quality, practicality and style went hand in hand: vehicles are tangible testimonies of that Golden Era. 

Precisely, I’m introducing for this review one of those utilitarian beauties of the good old school: the 1959 GMC Series S 100 (Blue Chip) Regular Cab Wideside (Fleetside) Regular Bed Custom, a Full Size 1/2 Ton Class 1 Light Duty Pickup Truck, the last model produced for the legendary Task Force line. 

While the Apache Series by Chevrolet and the S 100 Series by GMC shared several components of the body and chassis, as you can expect from two products of the same company, there were important differences in the front fascia and the powerplants available for each model. 

The front of the GMC S 100 looks bolder, more luxurious, baroque if you will, probably inspired in the front of some Cadillacs, the moldings around the grille are more voluminous and the emblem on top is bigger and more elaborate. 

The small-block V8 engines for GMC light duty pickup trucks were supplied by Pontiac or Oldsmobile and in general terms, these engines were slightly more powerful than their Chevrolet counterparts, everything in accordance with the higher position of the GMC brand regarding the latter. 

It’s not precisely easy to find "in the wild" one of these pickup trucks here in my homeland, if the Apaches by Chevrolet are rather scarce in working condition, let alone finding immaculate examples, the S 100 by GMC are a rarity, because GMC products don’t have official distribution here, as far as I know, but Chevrolet does. 

If you happen to find one, it’s either in really bad shape, crushed by the work to which it was subjected or poorly restored, but you can still perceive the excellence of their old but relevant design, even after more than half a century... 

I had a rather precocious encounter with M2 Machines in late 2009 (as I mentioned here), a point when local collectors of small sizes diecast only had eyes for brands of toy cars, so proper scale models in 1:64 and the like were ignored by the mass and appreciated only by seasoned collectors... 

I didn’t discover M2 Machines by my own, it was introduced to me by an appreciated friend of mine, who happens to be collector as well and who was kind enough to gift me one of its models, which obviously is part of my collection, belonging to the Ground Pounders Series. 

I loved the level of detail and the excellent finishes of that model: a 1957 Chevy Nomad and even today I find it an outstanding product, compared with other models from the Deluxe and Premium categories, which I got to know later in my journey as collector. 

I found very interesting that the models from this Series (Ground Pounders) had altered proportions in order to look tooned and it took some time for me to realize that it was a wink to the brand with which the creators of M2 Machines began: Muscle Machines and its main line of outrageous but funny tooned cars. 

More on my impressions about M2 Machines and its products as a whole in future publications, but now I will introduce another great model by this brand, based on a classic pickup truck, which I got in the secondary market, with a the help of another friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, a bit less than 8 years ago. 

It belongs to the 2013 Auto-Lift 2-Pack Series, Release 9, this Series includes a 4-Post car lift, completely made in diecast so it’ heavy, you can fix the models with screws to the lift and the lift to the display base in the same way; due to its features and overall quality, this product meets the requirements to be between the Deluxe and Premium categories, it speaks very well about M2 Machines. 

The model offers full diecast construction with great level of detail for its price point, which particularly in the case of pickup trucks of this brand, it’s getting higher and higher over time, a bit too much, specially for older releases, like this one. 

This is, by the way, a Chase Model, with golden chrome and golden accents here and there, in fact just one of the several variations of chase models by M2 Machines, including Super Chases offering the bare Zamac alloy, covered by the tampos and/or decals of the decoration and a clear lacquer to protect this finishing. 

The paint job was made in a beautiful olive green with metallic finishing and complemented by a sober decoration with tampos and/or decals on all the panels of the body, in white, golden, black, red and yellow, featuring a vintage logo of Hays Clutches & Flywheels on the doors. 

There are several plastic inserts for the moldings of the front lights, grille and bumpers, with golden chrome finishing, the chassis was painted in golden with satin / metal flake finishes. 

It offers opening hood and doors, detailed and painted engine bay, the interiors are well detailed too, worked in a very light gray, with accents painted in black, the multipart wheels offer realistic 5 Slots rims design with golden chrome finishing, styled rubber tires, skinny in front and very wide at the rear, for a dragster look (the rear tires are styled too, which is not so proper for a dragster actually, but in the scale model don’t look bad) and it was made in China...
