Si hay algo que he admirado de los fabricantes de autos norteamericanos, bueno, al menos en los viejos buenos tiempos, es cómo ellos pusieron todo ese poder, masculinidad, insolencia y encanto, en las manos de tantas personas cuando la fiebre de los Muscle Cars empezó oficialmente en el primer lustro de los 60s... 

Esta vez, estoy del lado de los "puristas" (a los cuales estoy acostumbrado a "despellejar", a causa de su estrechez mental), meramente para efectos prácticos... 

Estoy completamente consciente de los intentos previos para ofrecer alto rendimiento, en la plataforma de coches de pasajeros, representados por el Oldsmobile Rocket 88 de 1949, el Hudson Hornet de 1952, el Chrysler C-300 de 1955 o el AMC Rambler Rebel de 1957; pero me enfocaré en los coupés de tamaño mediano, hechos durante la década sicodélica que nos atañe... 

Tal vez fue la libertad de elegir que podrías haber sentido en el aire en esa época, tal vez fue la agitación social de una década llena de cambios en la mentalidad de la gente, tal vez fue el surgimiento de una generación joven con más poder adquisitivo que antes; pero las personas estaban listas para carros rápidos, pintorescos y viscerales... 

El entusiasta americano promedio de los autos en los 60s no estaba realmente interesado en los coches deportivos extranjeros; quiero decir, estos vehículos eran exóticos y maravillosamente diseñados, pero sus peculiaridades, complicado mantenimiento y más que nada, sus precios obscenos, mataron cualquier deseo que pudieran despertar. 

Ellos querían algo real, asequible, poderoso, despojado de cualquier refinamiento innecesario y más que cualquier cosa, algo enmarcado dentro del gusto norteamericano. 

El hecho que la vasta mayoría de los Muscle Cars eran básicamente autos familiares con hormonas, los hizo únicos; ya sé que "únicos" sonó algo trillado, es decir, ¿cuántas veces has escuchado esto antes (hablando de esta clase de vehículos), cómo chorrocientas mil veces?... 

Pero, permíteme desarrollar un poco más el asunto: los coches deportivos han sido diseñados y producidos, prácticamente desde cero, para su propósito específico; su silueta es bastante obvia, ellos lucen veloces y son veloces, no hay lío con eso, nadie preguntará: "¿en serio, este Lamborghini es más rápido que el carro de mi abuelita?"... 

Por otra parte, tienes los Muscle Cars americanos, ellos podrían ser el auto de tu padre (quiero decir, literalmente), su silueta no grita: "disculpa, ¿tu lastimera carretilla no puede mantener mi ritmo?"; siendo objetivo, son más bien encajados, masivos y algo pesados para los "estándares internacionales" de carros deportivos; aún más, en casos particulares, si no fuera por algunos gráficos y emblemas estratégicamente colocados, podrías confundirlos fácilmente con cualquier auto inofensivo... 

No obstante, una vez escuchas ese ronrroneo gutural que fluye del capó, sabrás que tus ideas preconcebidas son completamente erróneas y eso es más o menos lo que experimentarás con el Coupé 2 Puertas de Techo Duro Dodge Coronet Super Bee 440 6-Pack de 1969. 

En la plataforma de un coupé de tamaño mediano, de la quinta generación del modelo Coronet, el Super Bee fue construido; siguiendo el éxito de su primo, el Plymouth Road Runner y encarnando la misma filosofía: un auto listo para carreras drag desde fábrica, es así de simple. 

Sin embargo, detractores del Super Bee dicen que fue solo una copia al carbón del Road Runner, que era un modelo "redundante" para Dodge, ya que esta marca tenía al Charger R/T, al Coronet R/T y 500, al Dart GTS (sin mencionar al Challenger)... 

Pero pregunto yo: ¿a quién le importa, cuando la fauna de Muscle Cars es mejor, gracias a modelos como este?... 

Para aquellos que todavía ven al Super Bee como un Road Runner rebautizado, bien, no fueron clones en realidad; el Super Bee tenía un diseño más elegante para las fascias delantera y trasera, suspensión de trabajo pesado, estaba mejor equipado con accesorios de más alta calidad, era ligeramente más pesado y más costoso que su contraparte Road Runner. 

Las tripas de este monstruo eran un motor de 440 pulgadas cúbicas, 7.2 L, Dodge V8, clasificado en 390 hp, dotado con el "six-pack" (tres carburadores Holley de 2 barriles), acoplado a una transmisión manual de 4 velocidades, que recibió una palanca de cambios Hurst Competition-Plus con acoplamiento Hurst así que, puedes difamarlo cuanto quieras, pero estas especificaciones mantendrán tu boca cerrada, ¡a menos que quieras morder el polvo, desde luego! =PPPPP... 

Cuando se trata de Muscle Cars americanos, muy pocas marcas pueden mantener el ritmo de la tristemente extinta Johnny Lightning, especialmente desde la era Playing Mantis (1995-2005) y hasta su casi ofensivo retiro del mercado de diecast por Takara Tomy. 

En vez de estar con los brazos cruzados frente a semejante disparate de una marca japonesa que respetaba, pero ya no tanto, decidí traer más modelos hechos por Johnny Lightning a mi colección, siempre y cuando esten dentro de mi ajustado presupuesto. 

Conseguí este hermoso modelo gracias a los buenos oficios de un amigo mío, coleccionista de diecast (mucho antes que yo) e importador, cuyo principal objetivo son las réplicas a escala de modelos Renault. 

Esta es una reproducción impresionante de otro Muscle Car clásico, con toda la dedicación, calidad y respeto por los coleccionistas, que puedes esperar de JL. 

Pertenece a la Serie Muscle Cars 1969, que consiste de solo 4 modelos y es una muestra de la era RC2 Brands Inc. 

El modelo venía dentro de una tarjeta grande y gruesa, impresa a todo color presentando un diseño más bien simple, con una burbuja grande complementada por una bandeja interna, que mantiene el contenido protegido, hasta que es destapada, como debe ser, obviamente. 

Tiene construcción completa en diecast (JL sabía qué es lo que nosotros exigimos, pero no consiguieron apoyo suficiente de nuestra parte), lleno de lindos detalles; el trabajo de pintura es muy preciso en rojo ladrillo (casi naranja oscuro), uno de los colores disponibles para el coche real y complementado por finos tampos y/o calcomanías que verdaderamente replican los fabulosos gráficos, molduras cromadas, luces y demás, logrando un realismo maravilloso. 

Los interiores en negro, son fieles como siempre, las ruedas son multiparte, con rimes negros realistas, llantas en caucho labradas, presentando lindas franjas rojas, como es usual tiene apertura de capó (el cual es plástico, en vez de diecast, para emular el capó de colectores gemelos de inducción de aire Ramcharger en fibra de vidrio) y una tarjeta de colección, impresa a todo color, con las vistas principales del vehículo al frente y unas pocas especificaciones en la parte de atrás, es el bonus final y muy bienvenido que viene con esta edición, ¡simplemente brillante!...

If there is something I have admired about the american carmakers, well, at least in the old good times, is how they put all that power, masculinity, insolence and charm, in the hands of so many people when the Muscle Cars’ fever officially began in the first half of the 60s... 

This time, I’m siding with the "purists" (to which I’m used to "skinning", because of their mental narrowness), merely for practical purposes... 

I’m fully aware of the previous attempts to provide high performance, on the platform of passenger cars, represented by the 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88, the 1952 Hudson Hornet, the 1955 Chrysler C-300 or the 1957 AMC Rambler Rebel; but I will focus on the medium size coupes, made during the psychedelic decade that concerns us... 

Maybe it was the freedom to choose that you could have felt in the air at that time, maybe it was the social upheaval of a decade full of changes in the mindset of people, maybe it was the emergence of a young generation with more purchasing power than before; but people were ready for fast, picturesque and visceral cars... 

The average american car enthusiast in the 60s was not really interested in the foreign sports cars; I mean, these vehicles were exotic and wonderfully designed, but their quirks, complicated maintenance and more than anything, their obscene prices, killed any desire that these might arouse. 

They wanted something real, affordable, powerful, stripped of any unnecessary refinement and more than anything, something framed within the american taste. 

The fact that the vast majority of Muscle Cars were basically family cars with hormones, makes them unique; I already know that "unique" sounded kinda trite, I mean, how many times you have heard it before (talking about this kind of vehicles), like zillion thousand times?... 

But, let me develop the subject a little more: the sports cars have been designed and produced, virtually from scratch, for their specific purpose; their shape is pretty obvious, they look fast and they are fast, there is no mess with that, nobody will ask: "are you serious, this Lamborghini is faster than my granny’s ride?"... 

On the other hand, you have the american Muscle Cars, they could be your father’s car (I mean, literally), their shape doesn’t scream: "excuse me, your pitiful barrow can’t keep my pace?"; being objective, they are rather boxy, massive and kinda heavy for the "international standards" of sports cars; even more, in particular cases, if not for some strategically placed graphics and emblems, you could easily mistake them with any harmless car... 

Nonetheless, once you listen to that throaty purr that flows from the hood, you will know that your preconceptions are completely wrong and that’s pretty much what you will experience with the 1969 Dodge Coronet Super Bee 440 6-Pack Hardtop 2-Door Coupe. 

In the platform of a mid-size coupe, from the fifth generation of the Coronet model, the Super Bee was built; following the success of its cousin, the Plymouth Road Runner and embodying the same philosophy: a car ready for drag racing from factory, is that simple. 

However, detractors of the Super Bee say that it was just a carbon copy of the Road Runner, that it was a "redundant" model for Dodge, since this brand already had the Charger R/T, the Coronet R/T and 500, the Dart GTS (without mentioning the Challenger)... 

But I ask: who cares, when the Muscle Cars’ wildlife is better, thanks to models like this one?... 

For those who still see the Super Bee as a rebadged Road Runner, well, they were not clones actually; the Super Bee has a sleeker design for the front and rear fascias, heavy-duty suspension, it was better equipped with higher quality accessories, it was slightly heavier and more expensive than its Road Runner counterpart. 

The guts of this monster are a 440 cu in, 7.2 L, Dodge V8 engine, rated at 390 hp, gifted with the "six-pack" (three two-barrel Holley carburetors), coupled to a 4-speed manual transmission, that received a Hurst Competition-Plus shifter with Hurst linkage so, you can defame it all you want, but these specifications will keep your mouth shut, unless you want to bite the dust, of course! =PPPPP... 

When it comes to american Muscle Cars, very few brands can keep the pace of the sadly extincted Johnny Lightning, specially since the Playing Mantis era (1995-2005) and until its nearly offensive retirement of the diecast market by Takara Tomy. 

Instead of stay idly in the face of such blunder from a japanese brand that I respected, but now not so much, I decided to bring more models made by Johnny Lightning to my collection, as long as these are within my tight budget. 

I got this beautiful model thanks to the good offices of a friend of mine, diecast collector (way before than I do) and importer, whose main target are the scale replicas of Renault models. 

This is one impressive reproduction of another classic Muscle Car, with all the dedication, quality and respect for collectors, you can expect from JL. 

It belongs to the Muscle Cars 1969 Series, consisting of barely 4 models and it’s a sample of the RC2 Brands Inc. era. 

The model came inside a big and thick card, printed in full color featuring a rather simple design, with a big bubble complemented by an internal tray, that keeps the content protected, until it’s opened, as it must be, obviously. 

It has full diecast construction (JL knew what’s what we demand, but they didn’t get enough support on our part), full of nice details; the paint job is very accurate in brick red (almost dark orange), one of the colors available for the actual car and complemented by fine tampos and/or decals that truly replicate the fabulous graphics, chrome moldings, lights and else, achieving a wonderful realism. 

The interiors in black, are faithful as always, the wheels are multipart, with realistic black rims, styled rubber tires, featuring nice red stripes, as usual it has openable hood (which is plastic, instead of diecast, to emulate the fiberglass Ramcharger twin-scooped air induction hood) and a trading card, printed in full color, with the main views of the vehicle on front and a few specifications at the back, is the final and very welcome bonus that comes with this edition, just brilliant!...
