ENGLISH Affordable luxury are just two words, the curious thing about them is that we hardly use them together because they represent opposite concepts, albeit they are not even antonyms by definition...
Our society has created a halo of inaccessibility around luxury objects, they are reserved for people with the highest purchasing power and/or certain social status so somehow, they are out of place among ordinary people...
In a sense, it could be considered a mere social conventionalism, something arbitrary, imposed and it’s unquestionable that the concept of luxury is classist in essence, but luxury is expensive to produce or at least that’s the common perception...
Even so, from time to time, some people and the companies for which they work, strive for making more accessible products where sumptuousness is a key factor, products that otherwise would be out of reach of the working class or the middle class.
In truth, the 50s were a Golden Age worldwide, a sort of Renaissance of the modern era and paradoxically, much of its splendor lies in the economic boost that came during the post-war period.
One of those companies committed to bring luxury closer to the masses was General Motors, more precisely its entry level division: Chevrolet and I think it’s absolutely appropriate for a car brand whose origin is so illustrious, after all, we should remember that a famous swiss-american race car driver is behind this name.
The model that materialized this commitment I have already mentioned in the brand of the bow tie is the Bel Air, an emblem of style and elegance that unlike many of its contemporaries, including models developed by other divisions of GM, was not meant to cost you and arm and a lung.
The Bel Air is a generous car, generous in size, in space and comfort for its occupants, in allusions to the streamlined design of the 50s, which had its inspiration in the aeronautical world, generous in the accessories department and being the top of the line, it lived up to expectations.
This model, that began as a trim level, was not pretending to be a luxurious car, it was and it is a luxurious car, but one that managed to break the paradigm of luxury as an exclusivity for the elite, just another reason why the 50s were so great and even if a modern version of the Bel Air were developed, nothing beats the original!...
Maybe you wanna know one of the reasons why I’m getting more critical over time about this hobby as a whole (collectors, manufacturers, distributors, sellers, etc.), maybe you don’t, but this is my blog and I’m entitled to publish what I please or to reveal my motivations...
It might sound rude, it is not, people usually mistake respect with tolerance, but there is a good reason why these terms are NOT synonyms, even if some twisted ideologies want to make us believe so.
Now, returning to the point, when you want something for your collection and it turns out to be not available in the local market, your only option is to order it from a store or seller abroad.
This process is far from being straightforward, as it should be in a supposedly globalized world like ours, there are several chances to have issues at any point of such process: a failed electronic transaction for payment, a malfunction of the shopping website, a fraudulent seller or store, a delivery company in bad faith or a corrupted custom officer, among others.
I ordered the guest for this review with a help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, more than 5 years ago, along with the rest of models included in this release / series, a total of 6 items.
Well, only one model arrived at the end and obviously I asked where was the rest of the set, to which my friend replied: an official of the custom office stole the other models and there is very little we could do to recover them...
Then, when you have to deal with this kind of problems and being harmed by individuals like these ones, petty thieves, do you think it’s sensible to shut your mouth, tolerate this corrupt customs system, just because it’s politically correct or something like that?...
If so, you’re out of your mind and as far as I’m concerned, I don’t give a damn about political correctness...
You can’t be happy when you are involved in this kind of situations and you shouldn’t, I don’t think my case is isolate and in fact, it happened to me more than once so, yeah, there is a good reason for my indignation.
Now, albeit this stuff really riles me and it’s no wonder, I still try to enjoy this hobby and continue to promote it, because there are more good than bad things; thereupon and in full contrast with the previous tirade, I’m delighted with this model that I was able to rescue from the claws of those birds of prey, I would have preferred the whole set, but one is better that none.
It belongs to the 2008 Clearly Auto-Thentics Series, Release 1, as far as I know only two releases were made, which makes it probably one of the shortest production run ever offered by M2 Machines and if this diecast brand wanted to create something different for collectors, they did it in a categorical way.
You can find models made mostly of plastic everywhere (ask Mattel for that matter), but this line was just THE RIGHT APPROACH on what an adult collector would want, because they look cool and they still offer all the other features you expect from M2 Machines; as I read somewhere else, it’s like having "an X-ray look into the cars".
It has plastic body made in translucent green and diecast chassis painted in satin black, the level of detail and amount of parts is the same of the full diecast construction counterpart so it clearly looks stunning; there are tampos and/or decals for the trims on the panels of the body, emblems and windows moldings; most plastic inserts received chrome finishing, while others are clear.
It offers openable hood and doors, the engine received additional touches of paint in light blue and black, the interiors were worked in silver and light green, as always they are very realistic and neat; the wheels are multipart featuring realistic chrome rims with a red chrome contour and clear rubber tires, they look odd, but I have no issue with that.
The extras are the signature M2 display base and a trading card printed in full color, with an interesting picture of a mold for this model in front and a brief description of the selection process for models in Castline at the rear; finally, it was made in China...
Joe 2:11-15 "And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for HE is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it? Therefore also now, saith the LORD: turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: and rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your GOD: for HE is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Who knoweth if HE will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your GOD? Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly..."
The choice of clear plastic used in this is simple intricate and a stroke of genius! It gave an impression like somehow the car was been x-rayed or probably like seeing it through night vision. Maybe just maybe this is the mobile for Green Lantern...
Green Lantern’s ride ??? That would be an awesome idea !!! (although I guess the one from the golden age would feel more pleased with this stupendous vehicle)... Or maybe Wonder Woman, because she has her invisible jet and this car would be the perfect complement, unless she has some issue with green LOLOLOLOL... =OOOOO
I like Bel Air but not this color scheme and rare transparent look but then again I knew you always like something different from the usual standard boring stuff and that is absolutely OK.
Yeah pal, you’re absolutely right, I love crazy/unusual/odd stuff so, when I finally got this model (the only one that could be rescued from a filthy thief of the custom office), I felt it was a sort of compensation in this bothersome incident !!!... =OOOOO

I’m a professional graphic designer and a restful collector, but above all: I’m someone who doesn’t take for granted anything, just because someone else says so. I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...
