ENGLISH Truly, the motorsports lovers are eager to create crazy races, they take any place available, from the city streets to the wilderness, anything with at least a far resemblance with a road. Recently, and thanks to my hobby, I realized that a very particular race takes place in one of the summits of Northamerica’s mountains: Pikes Peak, Colorado...
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is, in fact, the second oldest motorsport race in America, which began in 1916 so, almost a whole century has passed and I had no idea about it!...
Now, what makes this race something singular?...
Uhmmm... The course covers 12.42 mile (19.98 km) and has 156 turns...
So far, nothing exceedingly demanding or different to a "standard" rally race, but...
It begins at 9,390 feet (2,863 m) and finishes at 14,115 feet (4,302 m), through narrow roads, at high speeds, with the high risk involved in such conditions and obviously, the more you climb, the thinner becomes the air around you.
This is a huge challenge, both for the pilot as for the car; in the case of the first element in this equation, with the thinner air, the reflexes are slowed and the muscle strength is undermined, also the second element suffers a 30% power loss for the same reason!...
That’s what I would call demanding and hence, in order to participate in this race, the contenders must spend several hundred thousand dollars and months of preparation, if they wanna win something.
Many prestigious automakers like: Peugeot, Toyota, Audi, Suzuki, Ford, Datsun / Nissan, Dodge, Porsche, Shelby, Corvette or Saab, inter alia, usually associated with independent automotive technology companies, have participated in this race so, it has gained a legendary status.
This vehicle is a prototype, designed and built by Rod Millen (from New Zealand), founder of Rod Millen Motorsports (recently this company changed its name by Millenworks, when it was sold to Textron) and also racing competitor in rally, off-road, hill-climbing, drifting and super touring.
It’s based on a Toyota Celica but heavily modified for the Unlimited Class, with a chromoly (chromium / molybdenum) tube frame / structure, covered by a carbon fiber body, an almost exaggerated dose of spoilers to achieve more aerodynamic downforce than a modern F1 car (absolutely necessary, because of the demanding driving conditions), heavy duty suspension, rack and pinion power assisted steering, and a total weight of 885 k (1,951 lbs).
All this paraphernalia is complemented by a monstrous TRD Inline 4, 128.1 cu in, 2.1 L, DOHC, fuel injection turbo engine, transversely mounted on front, rated at 850 hp and coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission with 4-wheel drive, which obliterated the previous record by more than 30 seconds with a 10’04”54 time, in 1994, keeping this record for about 13 years...
A quite mean machine, don’t you think so?...
Time for more off-road racing and Asian muscle machines made cleverly by Hot Wheels.
This cast was designed by Mark Jones and released in 1998.
The resemblance and level of detail in this model is quite good for the HW standards, which is very satisfactory.
I got two versions of this mold that are in the two extremes of the production, with 16 years of separation.
The first one belongs to the First Editions Series, part of the Regular lines features diecast body with black plastic chassis, red interiors including the safe cage and red details in plastic for the front and rear spoiler, smoked windows, yellow (slightly reddish) paint job, nicely detailed decor and plastic golden Wire Spoke Lace Wheels. It was made in Malaysia.
The last one belongs to the Off-Road Hot Wheels Racing Series, an Adult line, features diecast body with diecast chassis painted in black, black interiors without safe cage, black front spoiler and rear spoiler painted in yellow, smoked windows, yellow paint job, nicely detailed but simpler decor and chrome Real Riders Exotic wheels with rubber tires featuring BFGoodrich tampos in white; it was made in Thailand.
2 Joh 1:6-9 "And this is love, that we walk after HIS commandments. This is the commandment, that, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that JESUS CHRIST is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of CHRIST, hath not GOD. He that abideth in the doctrine of CHRIST, he hath both the FATHER and the SON."
Kind of refreshing to see Celica modified to more off road frame as we usually see the sport version more. In comparison, I would prefer the one made by Thailand. It seems to have more paint works and the tires and spoiler looking realistic.
HEHE... the one from Thailand will be more appealing for the people, because of all the features it has, since it belongs to an adult line and it’s meant to be nicer... but in some points, the older one (from Malaysia) is indeed more faithful to the actual car, specially because it has safe cage, the sponsors’ logos also are more accurate in amount, unlike the last one... the wheels, on the other hand, are not accurate, but i love that wheels design and even more in golden... =)

I’m a professional graphic designer and a restful collector, but above all: I’m someone who doesn’t take for granted anything, just because someone else says so. I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...
