Los camiones de bomberos o máquinas de bomberos son impresionantes, algunas personas estarán de acuerdo conmigo, otras, bueno, considerarán otra clase de vehículos como su delicia, lo cual está bien, créeme, el mundo de los autos es fascinante, pero una vez empiezas a cavar un poquitín, el calificativo "impresionante" alcanza, en su caso, un nivel completamente nuevo...
No hace mucho, pensé que la historia de lo que algunas veces llamamos aparatos contra incendios había comenzado hace relativamente poco, quiero decir, con el siglo XX, pero tuve que cambiar de opinión cuando descubrí que las máquinas de bomberos más tempranas conocidas hasta ahora, se remontan a la antigua Grecia...
Este ‘proto-camión de bomberos’ era básicamente un enorme bomba que dispara agua, el dispositivo sería bastante rudimentario hoy, pero era avanzado para la época; era manipulada por un grupo de esclavos, llamados Familia Publica en Latín (esclavos del pueblo)...
Este antiguo "departamento de bomberos" de Roma era usualmente lento para responder a las emergencias: los esclavos tenían que cuidar su propia seguridad, sabes...
La verdad es que en Roma, los grandes incendios eran frecuentes y solo en el año 6 A.C., cerca del 30% del área de la capital del imperio fue devastada por una serie de incendios; tiene sentido que esta gran ciudad fuera pionera en las tareas de combatir conflagraciones.
Los costos para el gobierno en ese tiempo, derivados de la extinción de estos incendios, fueron aparentemente demasiado altos así que, el emperador Augusto decidió crear un grupo de bomberos públicos (también con deberes de policía), llamado los Vigiles Urbani (vigilantes de la ciudad) o Cohortes Vigilum (cohorte de los vigilantes).
El legado de estos cuerpos de bomberos se perdió por un rato (de acuerdo con algunos cálculos, más o menos un rato de 1.700 años), pero reapareció poco a poco en los tiempos del Viejo Oeste, en Norteamérica, cuando las circunstancias fueron propicias ya que el uso de madera en la construcción de edificios era extendido y el riesgo de incendios, en consecuencia, no era precisamente bajo.
Podrías preguntar cuál fue el "reemplazo" de la antigua bomba de agua usada durante el imperio romano, lo creas o no fue algo incluso más rudimentario: un balde de agua, que era requerido en cada casa, sobre el porche frontal, en caso de incendios en la noche...
Esto me hace recordar a aquellos que piensan que la historia humana siempre fue una especie de progresión hacia un estado más evolucionado o cosas por el estilo, solo digo...
Hasta principios del siglo XVIII, en Norteamérica, más precisamente en Boston y Filadelfia, fueron usadas las primeras bombas de agua manuales, pero tomó casi dos siglos ver las primeras máquinas de bomberos autopropulsadas...
Este es solo un atisbo de lo que hace a las máquinas de bomberos o camiones de bomberos tan impresionantes y si te sentiste al menos un poco sorprendido sobre cuán larga puede ser su historia, créeme, yo también, más de lo que imaginas...
Prácticamente desde mi infancia, estaba ansioso de conseguir algunos camiones de bomberos para jugar, desafortunadamente, no estaban disponibles tan fácilmente en esa época como podrías pensar y Majorette, la marca de diecast con la mejor distribución, no tenía muchos de esta clase de modelos...
Mattel y sus productos en diecast: Hot Wheels y Matchbox, no tenía presencia oficial en nuestro país (Colombia) y solo podías conseguir sus modelos a través del mercado de las pulgas, tiendas especializadas (muy pocas disponibles a nivel local) o tal vez si tenías un pariente viviendo en EE.UU. o Europa y bueno, era un niño, con cero experiencia en esos asuntos luego, estas marcas para mí simplemente no existían.
Las cosas cambiaron años más tarde, cuando Mattel estableció una subsidiaria aquí y al menos en el caso de Hot Wheels, estaban disponibles fácilmente y eran relativamente asequibles; Matchbox nunca fue muy "suertuda" a nivel local, como supongo es el caso en muchos países alrededor del mundo.
La marca naranja de Mattel ha tenido siempre una distribución más bien pobre, lo cual no es de sorprender, considerando que en su país de origen la distribución es pésima, una bofetada en la cara de los coleccionistas de RU...
Con todo, fui capaz de conseguir los invitados para esta publicación a través de los canales regulares de distribución (tiendas minoristas), hace más de 3 años; siempre prefiero conseguirlos de esta forma, porque en el mercado secundario estos sets son muy propensos a ser objeto de especulación, debido a su alta demanda entre coleccionistas de cualquier clase de vehículos de emergencia.
Ambos artículos son modelos conceptuales / de diseñador pero, como es usual con la marca naranja de Mattel, hay un gran nivel de realismo y detalle que hace a estos modelos muy deseables; también, ambos modelos son parte del mismo 5-Pack: Serie Matchbox Heroic Rescue de 2015 y debo decir que la selección de modelos fue bastante equilibrada y atractiva.
El primer modelo fue llamado simplemente Fire Engine y fue lanzado en 2006 para la Serie MBX Metal - Regular, con al menos 25 iteraciones, solo para la Línea Principal; en 2014 fue modificado y adivina: más plástico fue añadido; sin embargo, al menos la parrilla frontal luce mejor como parte del chasis (punto extra para el diseñador).
No hay indicio sobre cual máquina de bomberos fue tomada como referencia, pero tiene algún parecido con modelos de los 90s fabricados por Dennis Sabre.
Tiene carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico plateado; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en blanco, complementado por una decoración simple pero bonita con tampos y/o calcomanías sobre los paneles laterales, en rojo, negro y plateado, representando el Matchbox Fire Department.
Los interiores fueron trabajados en gris oscuro e incluyen la base de la escalera, que a su vez fue hecha en plástico rojo y puede ser levantada, mientras que las ventanas son transparentes; las ruedas plásticas presentan diseño de rimes 6 Spoke Utility con acabado cromado.
El segundo modelo recibió el nombre de Blaze Blitzer, pero en realidad está muy basado en la Máquina de Bomberos para Aeropuertos Scania / Carmichael Viper Serie P300 / P400 Crewcab 4x4 de 2006 y es una recreación increíblemente buena de un vehículo de emergencia bastante imponente.
Fue lanzado por primera vez como parte de la Serie Heroic Rescue de 2013, al menos 7 iteraciones han sido hechas hasta aquí, incluyendo 2 para líneas Adultas (una de ellas como modelo de convención), pero nada con construcción completa en diecast.
La carrocería fue hecha en diecast, mientras el chasis en plástico negro; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en rojo, con tampos y/o calcomanías sobre los paneles laterales en amarillo, azul, negro y blanco, añadí detalles de pintura en plateado para ambos modelos.
Tiene interiores en negro, ventanas transparentes (que incluyen las luces en el techo, un toque muy ingenioso), las ruedas plásticas presentan diseño de rimes Ringed Gear en blanco y ambos fueron hechos en Tailandia...

Fire trucks or fire engines are awesome, some people will agree with me, others, well, they will consider other kind of vehicles as their delight, which is fine, believe me, the cars’ world is fascinating, but once you begin to dig a bit, the qualifier "awesome" reaches, in their case, a whole new level...
Not so long ago, I thought that the history of what sometimes is called fire apparatus had begun relatively recently, I mean, with the 20th century, but I had to change my mind when I discovered that the earliest fire engines known until now, date back to ancient Greece...

Until early 18th century, in North America, more precisely in Boston and Philadelphia were used the first hand-pumped fire engines, but it took almost two centuries to see the first self-propelled fire engines...
This is just a glimpse of what makes fire engines or fire trucks so awesome and if you felt at least a little surprised about how long could be their history, believe me, I do too, more than you imagine...
Virtually since my infancy, I was eager to get some fire trucks to play with, unfortunately, they were not as easily available at that time as you would think and Majorette, the diecast brand with the best distribution, didn’t have many of this kind of models...
Mattel and its diecast products: Hot Wheels and Matchbox, had no official presence in our country (Colombia) and you could only get their models through flea market, specialized stores (very few available locally) or maybe if you have a relative living in U.S. or Europe and well, I was a kid, with zero experience on those matters so, these brands for me just didn’t exist.
Things changed years later, when Mattel established a subsidiary here and at least in the case of Hot Wheels, they were easily available and relatively affordable; Matchbox never was "lucky" locally, as I guess is the case in many countries all over the world.
The orange brand of Mattel has had always a rather poor distribution, which is no surprise, considering that in its country of origin the distribution is appalling, a slap in the face of UK’s collectors...
Yet, I was able to get the guests for this publication through the regular channels of distribution (retail stores), more than 3 years ago; I always prefer to get them this way, because in the secondary market these sets are very prone to being object of speculation, due to the high demand among collectors of any type of emergency vehicles.
Both items are concept / designer models but, as usual with the orange brand of Mattel, there is a great level of realism and detail that make these models very desirable; also, both models are part of the same 5-Pack: 2015 Matchbox Heroic Rescue Series and I must say that the selection of models was quite balanced and attractive.
The first model was called simply Fire Engine and it was released in 2006 for the MBX Metal - Regular Series, with at least 25 iterations, only for the Mainline; in 2014 was modified and guess what: more plastic was added; however, at least the front grille looks better as part of the chassis (point extra for the designer).
There is no hint about which actual fire engine was taken as reference, but it has some resemblance with 90’s models manufactured by Dennis Sabre.
It has diecast body and silver plastic chassis; the paint job was made in white, complemented by a simple but nice decoration with tampos and/or decals on the side panels, in red, black and silver, representing the Matchbox Fire Department.
The interiors were worked in dark gray and include the base of the ladder, which in turn was made in red plastic and it can be lifted, while the windows are clear and the plastic wheels feature 6 Spoke Utility rims design with chrome finishing.
The second model received the Blaze Blitzer name, but actually it’s heavily based on the 2006 Scania / Carmichael Viper P300 / P400 Series Crewcab 4x4 Airport Fire Engine and it’s an incredibly good recreation of a quite imposing emergency vehicle.
It was released for the first time as part of the 2013 Heroic Rescue Series, at least 7 iterations has been made so far, including 2 for Adult lines (one of them as convention model), but nothing with full diecast construction.
The body was made in diecast, while the chassis in black plastic; the paint job was made in red, with tampos and/or decals on the side panels in yellow, blue, black and white, I added paint details in silver for both models.
It has black interiors, clear windows (which include lights on top, a very witty touch), the plastic wheels feature Ringed Gear rims design in white and both were made in Thailand...
