¿Ha sido siempre el lujo un asunto de cosas enormes, extravagantes y costosas o hay algo más involucrado en este concepto, algo que lo haga menos superfluo?...
Se nos ha vendido la idea desde hace mucho tiempo, que el lujo es un privilegio de aquellos que pueden costearlo, lo que significa en la mayoría de casos, personas patológicamente ricas y no es un secreto que esta gente suele ser ostentosa y excéntrica...
Si bien es cierto que la producción de artículos de lujo frecuentemente involucra una combinación de los mejores materiales, técnicas de fabricación, mano de obra con la más alta cualificación y ninguna de estas cosas es barata, hay al menos un elemento inherente que no carga este odioso estigma de lo inalcanzable.
Este elemento puede ser subdividido en tres, para efectos de rigurosidad terminológica: arte, artesanía y diseño, algunas veces los límites entre estas disciplinas son muy borrosos, pero hay todavía algunos rasgos distintivos para diferenciarlas y me enfocaré en el diseño.
Los objetos lujosos son, en más de un sentido, objetos diseñados, ya sea que estemos hablando de un yate, un auto, un anillo, un traje, una casa, un reloj, un bolso de mano, lo que sea; el diseño puede ser considerado un lujo en sí mismo: en un mundo donde los objetos son usados solo por necesidad, sin otras consideraciones, el diseño añade valores como más funcionalidad, estética y empatía con los usuarios.
El diseño hace a los objetos más deseables y de alguna forma, ha popularizado al lujo en un nivel que el arte o la artesanía muchas veces simplemente no pueden, sin hacerlo algo carente de buen gusto o dignidad.
Esto es algo que los diseñadores y/o ingenieros entendieron desde hace tiempo, una visión particularmente influenciada por el Movimiento Bauhaus y a pesar de su desaparición en 1933, bajo la presión del regimen Nazi, su legado ha continuado hasta nuestros días.
Mi invitada para esta publicación: la Volkswagen Tipo 2 T1b Deluxe Station Wagon / Samba Microbus Techo Corredizo (21 Ventanas) Custom de 1958 - 1962, un Minibus Compacto de Lujo Cabina Adelantada 5 Puertas / Vehículo Ligero de Pasajeros / Minivan, hecho para el mercado americano, es un ejemplo fabuloso de como un artículo de producción en masa puede expresar el concepto de lujo democrático.
Este vehículo no es enorme ni extravagante, en la época en que fue lanzado originalmente era también muy asequible, especialmente en el mercado europeo; sin embargo, el tiempo ha pasado, tiene prácticamente 60 años, es un clásico y hoy puede ser muy caro poseer y mantener en funcionamiento una belleza como esta: supongo que con el tiempo, el lujo del diseño gana valor inevitablemente...
Si le preguntas al coleccionista promedio de Hot Wheels cuál es una de las licencias más redituables que esta marca ha conseguido, es muy posible que la respuesta fuera: Ferrari y la mayoría de personas en este gremio estarán de acuerdo casi automáticamente, es algo que se ha dado por sentado, como muchas otras cosas en esta afición...
Tengo que estar de acuerdo en que la licencia Ferrari ha tenido un impacto importante en las ventas para Hot Wheels, particularmente en escalas más pequeñas y no es raro escuchar a gente en grupos o foros pidiendo el retorno del "cavallino rampante" a las "caballerizas" de HW...
Sin embargo, Ferrari no ha sido una presencia tan frecuente en el catálogo de la marca azul: tenemos más o menos 4 modelos en los 70s y 3 en los 80s, solo los 90s y los 2000s fueron décadas particularmente activas con esta franquicia, pero ¿que hay acerca de Volkswagen?...
Bueno, la presencia de VW ha estado desde 1968 como parte de los Dulces 16, obviamente era un modelo modificado y apodado Custom Volkswagen, pero cualquiera puede reconocer al Escarabajo en este modelo monstruoso.
Luego tenemos el "santo grial" de Hot Wheels, también conocido como Beach Bomb (del cual la versión de carga trasera, en rosado, perteneciente a los primeros prototipos, fue vendida por más de US$ 70.000; un precio ridículo si me lo preguntas, pero las personas pueden ser demasiado locas y/o demasiado estúpidas algunas veces: no es lo que cuesta (incluso teniendo en mente sus particularidades), es solo lo que alguien pagó por ella, que son dos cosas diametralmente opuestas, a propósito.
Tenemos también la variación de este último molde, apodada Volkswagen Beach Bomb Pickup, el VW Bug, el VW Golf, la VW Drag Bus, la VW T1 Drag Bus, el Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, la VW Brasilia, la VW ’65 Fastback, el Custom ’56 Drag Beetle, el VW Golf GTI, el VW New Beetle, el Evil Wheevil, el VW SP2, el VW Custom Beetle, la Cool Kombi, la Customized VW Drag Truck, la VW Caddy y la lista continua...
De hecho, la franquicia Volkswagen ha tenido una presencia más consistente a través del tiempo que digamos Ferrari y otras, también sigue siendo bastante popular entre los coleccionistas (incluyendo el suscrito), lo cual es una gran hazaña, considerando que no es una marca de superautos exóticos o algo por el estilo, pero su diseño es simplemente icónico.
Hoy estoy introduciendo una réplica a escala llamada Volkswagen Deluxe y fue lanzada en 2008 para la Serie HWC (Hot Wheels Collectors) - Neo Classics, Lanzamiento 7, una línea en la categoría De Lujo y luego, en 2010, fue ofrecida también para líneas en otras categorías, tiene 6 iteraciones hasta aquí.
Conseguí este modelo con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador, como es usual, hace más de 5 años; es el debút del modelo en una línea Adulta, pertenece a la Serie Hot Wheels Delivery - Slick Rides de 2010, consistente en 34 modelos; no hay información sobre el diseñador involucrado en su creación.
El trabajo general en este molde es realmente bueno para los estándares de Hot Wheels, con montones de finos detalles por todos lados, aún el chasis tiene algunos detalles básicos también, la proporción correcta y es en efecto fiel a la escala 1:64 (debemos recordar que HW muy esporádicamente cumple con esta condición, aunque está difundida la falsa creencia que todos sus modelos son escala 1:64 por defecto).
No obstante, hay un par de características que no concuerdan con la alta calidad lograda aquí: primera, los descomunales arcos para los guardafangos, no lucen solo desproporcionados, NO, en realidad lucen espantosos y arruinan un modelo que de otra forma seria extraordinario y segundo, el vástago que ayuda a mantener el remache en la parte posterior, visible claramente a través de la ventada trasera, es un feo turupe, por decir lo menos; afortunadamente los otros elementos salvan el día.
La carrocería y el chasis para este modelo fueron hechos en diecast; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en plateado con acabado Metalflake para la parte superior y rojo candy para el área inferior, está complementado por una decoración inspirada en PPG Industries con tampos y/o calcomanías prácticamente sobre todos los paneles, para las luces frontales, manijas de las puertas, techo corredizo y placa trasera, en negro, blanco, rojo oscuro y plateado, una decoración encantadora.
Las ventanas son transparentes, mientras que los interiores fueron trabajados en negro, las ruedas son multiparte presentando diseño de rimes Real Riders Mag 5 Slot en cromado, llantas labradas en caucho con línea roja de contorno y fue hecho en Tailandia...

We have been sold the idea since long ago, that luxury is a privilege of those who can afford it, which means in most cases, people pathologically rich and it’s not a secret that these people use to be ostentatious and eccentric...
While it’s true that production of luxury items frequently involves a combination of the best materials, manufacturing techniques, labor with the highest qualification available and none of these things is cheap, there is at least one inherent element that doesn’t carry this hateful stigma of the unattainable.
This element could be subdivided into three, for purposes of terminological strictness: art, craftsmanship and design, sometimes the limits between these disciplines are very blurry, but there are still some distinctive traits to differentiate them and I will focus on design.
Luxurious objects are in more ways than one designed objects, either we’re talking about a yacht, a car, a ring, a suit, a house, a watch, a handbag, you name it; design can be considered a luxury in itself: in a world where objects are used just by necessity, without further considerations, design adds values like more functionality, aesthetics and empathy with users.
Design makes objects more desirable and somehow it has popularized luxury in a level that art or craftsmanship many times just cannot, without making it something lacking of good taste or dignity.
This is something that designers and/or engineers understood since long ago, a vision particularly influenced by the Bauhaus Movement and despite its demise in 1933, under the pressure of the Nazi regime, its legacy has continued to this day.
My guest for this publication: the 1958 - 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 T1b Deluxe Station Wagon / Samba Microbus Sunroof (21-Windows) Custom, a Compact Luxury Cab Forward 5-Door Minibus / Light Passengers Vehicle / Minivan, made for the american market, is a fabulous example of how a mass production item can express the concept of democratic luxury.
This vehicle is not huge or flamboyant, at the time it was originally released it was also very affordable, specially in the european market; however, time has passed, it has virtually 60 years, it’s a classic and today it could be very expensive to own and keep running a beauty like this: I guess over time, the luxury of design gains value inevitably...
If you ask the average collector of Hot Wheels what’s one of the most profitable license this brand has ever gotten, it’s very likely that answer were: Ferrari and most people in this guild will agree almost automatically, it’s something that is taken for granted, as many other matters in this hobby...
I have to agree that the Ferrari license has had an important impact in sales for Hot Wheels, particularly in smaller scales and it’s not rare to hear people in groups or forums asking for the return of the "cavallino rampante" to the "stables" of HW...
However, Ferrari has not been such a frequent presence in the catalog of the blue brand: we have pretty much 4 models in the 70s and 3 in the 80s, only the 90s and 2000s were decades particularly active with this franchise, but what about Volkswagen?...
Well, the presence of VW has been since 1968 as part of the Sweet 16, obviously it was a modified model and dubbed Custom Volkswagen, but anybody can recognize the Beetle in this freakish model.
Then we have the "holy grail" of Hot Wheels, also known as Beach Bomb (of which a rear loader version, in pink, belonging to the first prototypes was sold for over US$ 70,000; a ridiculous price if you ask me, but people can be too bonkers and/or too stupid sometimes: it’s not what it costs (even bearing in mind its particularities), it’s just what someone paid for it, which are two diametrically opposite things, by the way.
We have also a variation of the latter mold, dubbed Volkswagen Beach Bomb Pickup, the VW Bug, the VW Golf, the VW Drag Bus, the VW T1 Drag Bus, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, the VW Brasilia, the ’65 VW Fastback, the Custom ’56 Drag Beetle, the VW Golf GTI, the VW New Beetle, the Evil Wheevil, the VW SP2, the VW Custom Beetle, the Cool Kombi, the Customized VW Drag Truck, the VW Caddy and the list continues...
In fact, the Volkswagen franchise has had a more consistent presence over time than let’s say Ferrari and others, it also remains quite popular among collectors (including the undersigned), which is a great feat, considering that it’s not a brand of exotic supercars or something like that, but its design is simply iconic.
Today I’m introducing a scale replica called Volkswagen Deluxe and it was released in 2008 for the HWC (Hot Wheels Collectors) - Neo Classics Series, Release 7, a line in the Deluxe category and then, in 2010, it was offered also for lines in other categories, it has 6 iterations so far.
I got this model with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, as usual, more than 5 years ago; it’s the debut of the model in an Adult line, it belongs to the 2010 Hot Wheels Delivery - Slick Rides Series, consisting of 34 models; there is no information about the designer involved in its creation.
The overall work on this mold is really good for the Hot Wheels standards, with lots of fine details everywhere, even the chassis has some basic details too, the right proportion and it’s indeed faithful to 1:64 scale (we must remember that HW very sporadically meets this condition, albeit it’s widespread the false belief that all its models are 1:64 scale by default).
Nonetheless, there are a pair of features that don’t go along with the high quality achieved here: first, the humongous arches for the fenders, they not only look disproportionate, NO, actually they look dreadful and ruin a model that otherwise would be extraordinary and second, the stem that helps to hold the rivet in the back, clearly visible through the rear window, it’s an ugly lump, to say the least; fortunately the other elements save the day.
Body and chassis for this model were made in diecast; the paint job was made in silver with Metalflake finishing for the top and candy red for the lower area, it’s complemented by a decoration inspired in PPG Industries with tampos and/or decals on virtually all the panels, for the front lights, door handles, sunroof and rear plate, in black, white, dark red and silver, a lovely decoration.
The windows are clear, while the interiors were worked in black, the wheels are multipart featuring Real Riders Mag 5 Slot rims design in chrome, styled rubber tires with red line contour and it was made in Thailand...
