Por allá en enero de 2011, presenté por primera vez un modelo de Muscle Machines (MM), una marca que estuvo extinta hasta 2012, cuando fue revivida como parte de las líneas de Maisto... 

No era mío, sino una de las joyas de un viejo amigo mío, ilustrador y colega coleccionista, que fue lo suficiente amable como para permitirme reseñarlo en mi blog (puedes encontrar esa publicación aquí)... 

Fue un asunto de tiempo, muy poco tiempo debo confesar y no pude evitar enamorarme de esta marca, los productos únicos que estaba ofreciendo, en esa época solo en el mercado secundario, eran tan atrayentes, que no podía y en realidad no quería resistir su encanto... 

El amor por esta marca ha estado creciendo de forma consistente y he añadido varios modelos de MM a mi colección, todos ellos pertenecientes a la era cuando fue independiente, a pesar que se están haciendo más difíciles de conseguir y cada vez encuentro más razones para apreciar una marca que rompió el molde del mercado del diecast en los albores del siglo 21. 

Esta vez estoy introduciendo una camioneta personalizada desarrollada por el polémico diseñador de autos y motos Jesse James, dueño del taller West Coast Choppers, basada en una Camioneta Pickup GMC Sierra 1500 Cabina Extendida SLE AWD (Tracción en Todas las Ruedas, por sus siglas en inglés) Platón Corto Personalizada de 2004, una Camioneta Pickup de Tamaño Completo Clase 2a para Trabajo Liviano que fue modificada con buen gusto... 

En una reseña anterior, que puedes encontrar aquí, empecé a profundizar un poco en la historia detrás de Muscle Machines, la marca original creada en 1999 - 2000, porque desde 2012, como ya fue mencionado, Maisto (May Cheong Group - MCG) se hizo cargo del nombre de marca, propiedad intelectual y la mayoría de moldes, también ha introducido nuevos modelos al rango y bueno, el enfoque general de la marca fue cambiado en aspectos muy importantes... 

Como fue establecido previamente, Muscle Machines fue parte de las marcas de Funline Merchandise Co., Inc., (sí, la misma dueña de la marca M2 Machines) y comenzó desarrollos en 1999. 

Si bien fue conocida principalmente por sus versiones caricaturizadas de Clásicos Americanos y Muscle Cars de los 40s, 50s, 60s y 70s, inspirados por el trabajo (ilustraciones) creadas por el artista australiano Rohan Day, fue capaz de producir varias series (alrededor de 30, de acuerdo con la información recopilada por coleccionistas expertos allá afuera), en al menos tres líneas principales: coches caricaturizados, tuners asiáticos y vehículos de Jesse James... 

Precisamente, los modelos caricaturizados le dieron a esta marca la clase de atención que otras marcas buscaron o están buscando por años, casi instantáneamente y ese fue el objetivo que Chris y Ken Leong tenían en mente cuando empezaron con MM, porque para ellos era claro que ya habían más que suficientes fabricantes de diecast enfocados en modelos donde la precisión y el parecido con el carro real, tomado como base, son las mayores prioridades. 

Desde luego, junto con los seguidores, también hubo detractores vigorosos de esta marca, que no entendieron el uso de proporciones alteradas intencionalmente, motores exagerados, techos recortados, toneladas de cromo, llantas gordas y otras características singulares de estas réplicas, que las hacían "inapropiadas para coleccionistas adultos", de acuerdo con su opinión... 

No obstante, el tiempo y los coleccionistas adultos demostrarían que estaban equivocados, y el impacto de estos productos sobre el mercado fue tan enorme, que otros grandes jugadores en este segmento fueron de alguna forma forzados a desarrollar sus propios modelos caricaturizados, por ejemplo: Hot Wheels con sus Series Hardnoze y Fatbax, Johnny Lightning con sus líneas Zingers y Phat Boyz o Maisto con su Serie Hoodz, pero estos no fueron ni de cerca tan exitosos como las versiones de Muscle Machines... 

Más acerca de este tema sugerente en publicaciones futuras, así que ahora cambiémos el foco a mi invitada para esta reseña, un modelo que conseguí en el mercado secundario, en una tienda de coleccionables local, hace más o menos 5 años, durante una de mis cacerías casuales entonces, fue una adición inesperada pero más que bienvenida a mi colección... 

Para esta marca el estándar es la construcción completa en diecast y esa es una obligación para un modelo de la categoría De Lujo / Gama Alta, pero con mejoras menores aquí y allá, este artículo puede cumplir los requimientos para la categoría Premium sin problemas y esto habla muy bien sobre su calidad. 

El nivel de detalle es sobresaliente, mejor que en productos equivalentes de otras marcas y la proporción general tiende a ser un poquitín exagerada, lo cual no es inconveniente en este caso ya que este es un modelo personalizado y eso es lo que esperas. 

El trabajo de pintura es rico y preciso, fue hecho en negro con acabado brillante (también fue ofrecida en blanco y azul), y complementado por calcomanías grandiosas que reproducen el trabajo de aerografía sobre el vehículo real muy bien, aplicadas en los paneles laterales y el capó; hay tampos para las luces frontales y de cola, muy prolijo. 

Un inserto plástico fue creado para el frente, recibió tampos sobre las luces y también pintura en la parrilla; curiosamente, parece que este modelo estaba destinado a presentar apertura de capó, pero al final fue sellado por razones que desconozco; otra gran característica, usual en Muscle Machines, es un trabajo dedicado en los interiores en gris medio, que incluyeron toques de pintura en rojo y negro, para los asientos y el timón, complementados por ventanas transparentes y hay una bonita cubierta del platón. 

Los extras no terminan allí, una característica de acción "Slam!" fue ofrecida para este artículo y otros vehículos en esta línea, la cual básicamente rebaja un poco más el modelo, funcionando más o menos como una suspensión de aire e involucra varios insertos plásticos y partes adicionales: estos productos son verdaderas joyas que ofrecen verdadero valor agregado!... 

Recientemente, Hot Wheels anunció una característica similar para una Chevy S10, que será lanzada como parte de las líneas De Lujo RLC / HWC y ha sido mercadeada con todo el bombo y fanfarrias habituales para esta marca, reclamando que es una completa novedad y cosas por el estilo; muchos coleccionistas de HW estaban sorprendidos, incluso conmocionados que una característica como esta fuera ofrecida "por primera vez"... 

Pero adivina qué: un producto similar (equivalente en general, mejor en varios aspectos) fue introducido hace 15 años por Muscle Machines y a diferencia de los artículos sobrevalorados de los Clubes RL y HW, que alcanzan precios aún más ridículos en el mercado secundario, este fue ofrecido por un precio más que decente, lo que me recuerda que la buena calidad no tiene que ser demasiado costosa (sabes, esa es la clase de falacia que los acaparadores / especuladores quieren difundir a través del gremio de coleccionistas). 

Y hay más incluso, el trabajo en las ruedas multiparte es magnífico, reproduciendo el complejo diseño de rimes con acabado cromado usado en la pickup real, con un nivel de detalle y realismo que marcas como: Kyosho, Tarmac, Tomica Limited Vintage / Neo o Ignition deberían envidiar, por una fracción de su precio, llantas labradas en caucho de bajo perfil, una linda tarjeta de colección impresa a todo color con una foto del modelo a escala en sí, por ambas caras y fue hecho China...

Back in January, 2011, I featured for the first time a model made by Muscle Machines (MM), a brand that was extincted until 2012, when it was revived as part of the lines by Maisto... 

It was not mine, but one of the gems of an old friend of mine, illustrator and fellow collector, who was kind enough to let me review it in my blog (you can find that publication here)... 

It was a matter of time, very little time I must confess and I couldn’t help but fall in love with this brand, the unique products it was offering, at that moment only in the secondary market, were so appealing, that I couldn’t and actually I didn’t want to resist its charm... 

The love for this brand has been growing consistently and I have added several models by MM to my collection, all of them belonging to the era when it was independent, despite they are getting harder to get and every time I find more reasons to appreciate a brand that broke the mold of the diecast market at the dawn of the 21th century. 

This time I’m introducing a custom truck developed by the controversial cars and motorbikes designer Jesse James, owner of the West Coast Choppers workshop, based on a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 Extended Cab SLE AWD (All Wheel Drive) Short Box / Bed Pickup Truck Custom, a Full Size Class 2a Light Duty Pickup Truck that was tastefully modified... 

In a previous review, that you can find here, I started to deepen a little bit in the story behind Muscle Machines, the original brand created in 1999 - 2000, because since 2012, as it was already mentioned, Maisto (May Cheong Group - MCG) took over the brand name, intellectual property and most of the molds, it has also introduced new models to the range and well, the overall approach of the brand was changed in very important aspects... 

As it was established previously, Muscle Machines was part of the brands of Funline Merchandise Co., Inc., (yeah, the same owners of the M2 Machines brand) and started developments in 1999. 

While it was known mainly for its tooned versions of American Classics and Muscle Cars of the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s, inspired by the work (illustrations) created by the Australian artist Rohan Day, it was able to produce several series (about 30, according to information gathered by experienced collectors out there), in at least three main lines: tooned cars, asian tuners and Jesse James vehicles... 

Precisely, tooned models gave this brand the kind of attention that other brands were or are looking for years, almost instantly and that was the goal that Chris and Ken Leong had in mind when they started with MM, because for them it was clear that there were already more than enough diecast manufacturers focused on models where accuracy and resemblance to the actual car, taken as basis, are top priorities. 

Of course, along with fans, there were also vigorous detractors of this brand, who didn’t understand the use of intentionally altered proportions, exaggerated engines, chopped tops, tons of chrome, fat tires and other singular features of these replicas, which made them "innappropriate for adult collectors", according to their opinion... 

Nonetheless, time and adult collectors would prove them wrong, and the impact of these products on the market was so huge, that other big players in this segment were somehow forced to develop their own tooned models, for instance: Hot Wheels with its Hardnoze and Fatbax Series, Johnny Lightning with its Zingers and Phat Boyz lines or Maisto with its Hoodz Series, but these were not nearly as successful as Muscle Machines versions... 

More about this suggestive topic in future publications, so now let’s change the focus to my guest for this review, a model I got in the secondary market, in a local diecast collectibles store, pretty much 5 years ago, during one of my casual hunts then, it was an unexpected but more than welcome addition to my collection... 

For this brand the standard is full diecast construction and that’s a must for a model in the Deluxe / High End category, but with minor improvements here and there, this item can meet the requirements for Premium category without problems and it speaks very well about its quality. 

The level of detail in the molds is outstanding, better than in equivalent products made by other brands and the overall proportion tends to be a tad exaggerated, which is not inconvenient in this case since this is a custom model and that’s what you expect. 

The paint job is rich and accurate, it was made in black with glossy finishing (also offered in white and blue), and complemented by great decals that reproduce the airbrushing work on the actual vehicle very well, applied on the side panels and the hood; there are tampos for the front and tail lights, very prolix. 

A plastic insert was created for the front, it received tampos on the lights and also paint on the grill; curiously, it looks like this model was meant to feature opening hood, but in the end it was sealed for reasons I don’t know; another great feature, usual in Muscle Machines, is a dedicated work on the interiors in medium gray, that included paint touches in red and black, for the seats and steering wheel, complemented by clear windows and there is a nice box / bed cover. 

The extras don’t finish there, a "Slam!" action feature was included for this item and other vehicles in this line, which basically lowers a bit more the model, working pretty much like an air suspension and it involves several plastic inserts and additional parts: these products are true gems that offer true added value!... 

Recently, Hot Wheels announced a similar feature for a Chevy S10, that will be released as part of the RLC / HWC Deluxe lines and it has been marketed with all the hype and fanfares usual for this brand, claiming that it was a complete novelty and things like that; many HW collectors were surprised, even shocked that a feature like that was offered "for the first time"... 

But guess what: a similar product (equivalent in general, better in several aspects) was introduced 15 years ago by Muscle Machines and unlike the overpriced items of the RL and HW Clubs, that reach even more ridiculous prices in the secondary market, this one was offered for a more than decent price, which reminds me that good quality doesn’t have to be too expensive (you know, that’s the kind of fallacy that hoarders / scalpers want to spread through the collectors guild). 

And there is even more, the work on the multipart wheels is magnificent, reproducing the complex rims design with chrome finishing used in the actual pickup, with a level of detail and realism that brands like: Kyosho, Tarmac, Tomica Limited Vintage / Neo or Ignition should envy, for a fraction of their price, low profile styled rubber tires, a nice trading card printed in full color with a picture of the scale model itself, on both sides and it was made in China...
