En términos humanos, no hay tal cosa como una creación o desarrollo original en sentido absoluto, porque obtenemos inspiración de alguien o algo más y simplemente no podemos evitarlo: en un sentido profundo estamos siempre en deuda, no solo por lo que tenemos, sino también por lo que somos y probablemente solo nuestros errores y defectos son completamente nuestros...
En un sentido profundo también, no hay nada nuevo bajo el sol y, con todo, siempre estamos buscando con ansia cosas nuevas; quizás por eso es que las personas tienden a desarrollar alguna clase de animosidad contra las nuevas interpretaciones de cosas antiguas...
Si estuvieramos hablando de medios masivos (TV, cine, etc.), hay un par de conceptos, relacionados en ciertos niveles, que han estado rondando muy a menudo últimamente, conceptos que pueden ser aplicados en otros contextos como, por ejemplo, la industria automotriz: "remake" (nueva versión) y "secuela"...
Sí, hay animosidad contra los "remakes" y/o "secuelas", pero hay una buena razón para eso: con regularidad, los "remakes" y/o "secuelas" terminan siendo versiones de pacotilla de antiguos clásicos, que nunca alcanzarán la trascendencia de sus referentes; aunque, al menos, estos fracasos motivan a la gente a volver a la fuente.
Las personas tienden a asociar a los "remakes" y/o "secuelas" con una carencia descarada de creatividad y no los culpo, pero recuerdo también que, de vez en cuando, hay "remakes" y/o "secuelas" que logran más que solo homenajear al original, como Aliens (1986) o Terminator 2 - Día del Juicio (1991).
La industria automotriz es más rica en ejemplos de "remakes" y/o "secuelas", que rivalizan o incluso superan a su inspiración original y la primera década del siglo actual fue particularmente notable en ese sentido.
Hoy estoy introduciendo una de esas recreaciones de vehículos clásicos: el Ford Shelby GR-1 de 2005, un Gran Turismo / Super Auto / Auto Conceptual Coupé 2 Puertas compacto, inspirado por el legendario y despampanante Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupé de 1964 - 1965, uno de los coches de carreras americano más grandiosos de todos los tiempos.
Por esa época, la gente en el departamento de Diseño de Ford estaban buscando "musas" para poner la marca del óvalo azul en boca de los amantes de los carros alrededor del mundo y ¿qué podría ser más útil que traer de vuelta íconos de los deportes a motor?...
Entre las varias interpretaciones de viejas glorias en las carreras, esta se destaca por sus líneas cinceladas y diseño general pulcro, que no solo respeta elementos clave del estilo original, sino también lo lleva al siguiente nivel, al siglo actual.
Fue magistralmente traducido de una idea a un concepto concreto por el diseñador de Ford George Saridakis, quien se las arregló para impresionar no solo al equipo del Estudio de Diseño Avanzado de Irvine, sino incluso al Jefe de Diseño en ese momento, J. Mays y luego fue traducido a un modelo en arcilla de tamaño real por el Departamento de Creación de Productos Avanzados.
Desafortunadamente, los ejecutivos en Ford no podían dar luz verde a todos los fantásticos proyectos en progreso, con el fin de llevarlos a producción y uno de los afectados con estas decisiones fue el Ford Shelby GR-1 (junto con la nueva interpretación del Shelby Cobra) y permaneció solo como Auto Conceptual.
Algunas personas versadas en estos temas, reclamaron que el GR-1 no habría sido tan maravilloso como el concepto prometía, si hubiera sido llevado a producción más, aparentemente, Ford no podía lanzar dos o tres Superautos simultáneamente así que, solo el Ford GT recibió la luz verde y sorprendentemente, no fue recibido tan bien como se esperaba, aunque está ganando más y más aprecio con el tiempo.
No obstante, Superperformance LLC, una compañía de Irvine, California, constructora y personalizadora licenciada por fabricantes, fundada en 1994, anunció recientemente la materialización de este ícono retrofuturista y están haciendo equipo con Shelby American para perfeccionar los detalles del coche, para producción limitada.
Créeme: hay un montón de expectativa sobre este desarrollo, pero no esperes que este carro sea muy barato, en absoluto...
La llegada del nuevo siglo y un nuevo milenio fueron el catalizador para el surgimiento de nuevas compañías en el mercado del diecast, algunas de ellas con una vida muy corta y, con todo, de alguna forma estas compañías se las arreglaron para dejar una impresión más duradera en la mente de coleccionistas adultos como yo, que otras marcas con más historia y "una reputación más sólida"...
Uno de esos nombres nuevos fue 1 Badd Ride, un fabricante de modelos en diecast de Rogers, Arkansas; la Revista Diecast X reclama que fue distribuida por ProMarkCo, Limited, pero parece que ProMarkCo fue también la dueña de la marca y 1BR tenía un perfil muy particular: el desarrollo de "autos norteamericanos modernos de (alto) desempeño, sobrealimentados, con un foco en las modificaciones realistas, moldes de calidad y toneladas de detalle".
Esta fue una compañía de nicho, con un enfoque similar al de Muscle Machines y sus Series SS Tuner e Import Tuner, que presentaron personalizaciones moderadas en coches japoneses, pero a diferencia de MM, 1BR aplicó estas modificaciones a carros norteamericanos y sus modelos en "Escala 1:64" no ofrecen apertura de capó o puertas...
Más sobre 1 Badd Ride en una publicación futura y mientras tanto, pongamos el reflector en mi invitado para esta reseña, otra joya fuera de la aburrida corriente principal en el mundo del diecast...
Lo conseguí en el mercado secundario, a través de una tienda de coleccionables local (una que en la actualidad vende sus artículos virtualmente, una tendencia en alza debido a los costos de operación de una tienda física, desafortunadamente), hace más o menos 3 años y estuvo disponible por largo tiempo como pude comprobar con uno de los dueños de la tienda, bajo el radar del coleccionista promedio, esperándome...
El modelo pertenece a la Serie 1 Badd Ride - Lanzamiento 1, consistente en 6 modelos con 2 variantes, 12 en total; justo como el modelo anterior de esta marca que conseguí para mi colección (que puedes ver aquí), venía dentro de un clamshell con un diseño de tarjeta agradable y llamativo, impresa a todo color e incluyendo el emblema de la serie en relieve.
Si bien la escala es más bien grande (1:54, lo cual no me molesta), el nivel de detalle y calidad general del modelo son fabulosos, un verdadero ejemplo de lo que realmente significa "la mejor relación calidad-precio" y justo como en el caso de Muscle Machines (la original, no la actual, ya que esta última propiedad de May Cheong Group), con mejoras mínimas cumpliría con los criterios para la categoría Premium, pero pertenece a la categoría De Lujo.
Tiene construcción completa en diecast y fiel a la visión de la marca, ofrece "moldes de calidad y toneladas de detalle", es realmente satisfactoria; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en uno de los colores oficiales para Shelby: azul, con acabado metálico, aunque en uno de los lados la pintura tiene algunas burbujas pequeñas, está complementado por un par de franjas de carreras en blanco y varios tampos y/o calcomanías para la falsa parrilla frontal, luces frontales y de niebla, rejillas falsas laterales, tapa de combustible, luces, rejilla y punteras de los escapes traseros, aplicados con precisión, el chasis recibió pintura negro con acabado satinado.
El modelo ofrece ventanas transparentes e interiores multiparte trabajados en gris claro y negro, con detalles pintados en negro (cinturones de seguridad); las ruedas multiparte presentan un diseño de rimes 9 Spoke muy deportivo y realista, con acabado cromado, llantas labradas en caucho de bajo perfil; hay también una tarjeta de colección impresa a todo color, con algunas estadísticas y fue hecho en China!...

In human terms, there is no such thing as an original creation or development in the absolute sense, because we get inspiration from someone or something else and we just cannot avoid it: in a deep sense we’re always in debt, not only for what we have, but also for what we are and probably only our mistakes and defects are completely ours...
In a deep sense too, there is nothing new under the sun and yet, we are looking eagerly for new stuff; perhaps that’s why people tend to develop some sort of animosity against new renditions of old stuff...
If we were talking about massive media (TV, cinema, etc), there is a pair of concepts, related in certain levels, that have been hanging around very often lately, concepts that can be applied in other contexts like, for instance, the automotive industry: "remake" and "sequel"...
Yeah, there is animosity against "remakes" and/or "sequels", but there is a good reason for that: in a regular basis "remakes" and/or "sequels" end up being shoddy versions of old classics, that will never reach the transcendence of their referents; albeit, at least, these flops motivate people to return to the source.
People tend to associate "remakes" and/or "sequels" with a brazen lack of creativity and I don’t blame them, but I remember as well that, once in a while, there are "remakes" and/or "sequels" that get more than just pay a homage to the original, like Aliens (1986) or Terminator 2 - Judgement Day (1991).
The automotive industry is richer in examples of "remakes" and/or "sequels", that rival or even overcome their original inspiration and the first decade of the current century was particularly remarkable in that sense.
Today I’m introducing one of those recreations of classic vehicles: the 2005 Ford Shelby GR-1, a Compact 2-Door Coupe Grand Tourer / Super Car / Concept Car, inspired by the legendary and stunning 1964 - 1965 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, one of the greatest American race cars of all time.
By that time, people at the Design Department of Ford were looking for "muses" to put the brand of the blue oval in the mouth of car lovers around the world and what could be more handy than bring back icons of motorsports?...
Among the several renditions of old glories in racing, this one stands out for its chiseled lines and neat overall design, that not only respect key elements of the original style, but also takes it to the next level, to the current century.
It was masterfully translated from an idea to a concrete concept by the Ford designer George Saridakis, who managed to impress not only the team at the Irvine Advanced Design Studio, but even to the Head of Design at that moment, J. Mays and then it was translated to a full size clay model by the Advanced Product Creation Department.
Unfortunately, the executives at Ford couldn’t give green light to all the fantastic projects in progress, in order to take them to production and one of the affected with these decisions was the Ford Shelby GR-1 (along with the new rendition of the Shelby Cobra) and it remained just as Concept Car.
Some people versed in these topics, claimed that the GR-1 would not have been as gorgeous as the concept promised, if it would have been taken to production plus, apparently, Ford couldn’t release two or three Supercars simultaneously so, only the Ford GT received the green light and surprisingly, it wasn’t received as well as expected, albeit it’s gaining more and more appreciation over time.
Nonetheless, Superperformance LLC, a company from Irvine, California, factory licensed builder and customizer, founded in 1994, announced recently the materialization of this retrofuturistic icon and they are teaming up with Shelby American to perfect the details of the car, for limited production.
Believe me: there is a lot of expectation about this development, but don’t expect this car to be dirt cheap, at all...
The arrival of the new century and a new millennium were the catalyst for the emergence of new companies in the diecast market, some of them with a very short life and yet, somehow these companies managed to leave a more long lasting impression in the mind of adult collectors like me, than other brands with more history and a "more solid reputation"...
One of those new names was 1 Badd Ride, a manufacturer of diecast models from Rogers, Arkansas; Diecast X Magazine claims that it was distributed by ProMarkCo, Limited, but it looks like ProMarkCo was also owner of the brand and 1BR had a very particular profile: the development of "souped-up modern American (high) performance cars with a focus on realistic modifications, quality casting and tons of detail".
This was a niche company, with a similar approach to that of Muscle Machines and its Series SS Tuner and Import Tuner, that featured mild customizations on Japanese cars, but unlike MM, 1BR applied these modifications to American cars and its models in "1:64 Scale" don’t offer opening hood or doors...
More on 1 Badd Ride in a future publication and in the meantime, let’s put the spotlight on my guest for this review, another gem out of the boring mainstream in the diecast world...
I got it in the secondary market, through a local collectibles store (one that currently sells its items virtually, an upward trend due to the operating costs of a physical store, unfortunately), pretty much 3 years ago and it was available for a long time as I could check later with one of the owners of the store, under the radar of the average collector, waiting for me...
The model belongs to the 2006 1 Badd Ride Series - Release 1, consisting of 6 models with 2 variants, 12 in total; just like the previous model of this brand I got for my collection (that you can see here), it came inside a clamshell with a nice and flashy card design, printed in full color and including the emblem of the series embossed.
While the scale is rather big (1:54, which doesn’t bother me), the level of detail and overall quality of the model are fabulous, a true example of what it really means "best value for the money" and just like the case with Muscle Machines (the original one, not the current, since the latter is owned by May Cheong Group), with minimal improvements it would meet the criteria for the Premium category, but it belongs to the Deluxe category.
It has full diecast construction and faithful to the vision of the brand, it offers "quality casting and tons of detail", it’s really satisfying; the paint job was made in one of the official colors for Shelby: blue, with metallic finishing, albeit in one of the sides the paint has some small bubbles, it’s complemented by a pair of racing stripes in white and several tampos and/or decals for the front faux grille, front and fog lights, side faux grilles, fuel cap, rear lights, grille and exhaust tips, accurately applied, the chassis received black paint with satin finishing.
The model offer clear windows and multipart interiors worked in light gray and black, with details painted in black (seatbelts); the multipart wheels feature a very sporty and realistic 9 Spoke rims design, with chrome finishing, low profile styled rubber tires; there is also a trading card printed in full color, with some statistics and it was made in China !!!...
