Beatnik Bandit, Custom Barracuda, Custom Camaro, Custom Corvette, Custom Cougar, Custom Eldorado, Custom Firebird, Custom Fleetside, Custom Mustang, Custom T-Bird, Custom Volkswagen, Deora, Ford J-Car, Hot Heap, Pithon y Sillouette, nombres que seguramente harán sonar algunas campanas...
Y no es de extrañar, esos son los famosos (o infames) Dulces 16, a saber, los primeros productos lanzados por una marca de autos de juguete que empezaría una revolución en este segmento: Hot Wheels, una revolución en la cual la jugabilidad y la apariencia general fueron cambiadas dramáticamente, con respecto a lo que estaba disponible en el mercado en esa época, ofreciendo colores ostentosos, acabados metalizados y ruedas super rápidas...
Pero también fue una revolución en la cual el mercadeo fue muy utilizado para promocionar la marca, en un tiempo cuando otros fabricantes de coches de juguete estaban más enfocados en la buena relación precio-calidad, que en el mercadeo, Hot Wheels lo usó con el fin de generar una reputación que no siempre correspondía con la realidad: este último factor ha definido la marca más que cualquier otra cosa desde entonces...
Ahora, volviendo a los Dulces 16, puedes encontrar en esta lista algunos rasgos que llegaron a ser tópicos recurrentes para la marca del logo llameante: Muscle Cars, Cultura Custom, autos lujosos norteamericanos, autos conceptuales, autos de carreras, autos de diseñador y Hot Rods; tal vez la única "disonancia" es un Escarabajo en la mezcla, pero incluso en su caso, "el estilo de vida norteamericano" está presente con su indignante personalización y un estilo hotrodesco.
No obstante, lo que llama poderosamente mi atención en estos Dulces 16 es la inclusión de un Custom Car basado en un Show Car de la vida real, diseñado por Don Tognotti, llamado "King T" o "Tognotti’s T", el cual a su vez estaba basado en un Ford Modelo T Roadster de la segunda década del siglo pasado y estoy hablando del Hot Heap.
De hecho, las décadas de los 20s y 30s del siglo pasado han estado representadas consistentemente desde el comienzo de Hot Wheels, desde luego, raramente con modelos en su forma de serie, porque las versiones custom se ajustan mejor al estilo de la marca.
Talbot Lago, ’32 Ford Delivery, Classic Packard, 1932 Bugatti Type 50, ’34 Ford, Super Smooth, ’32 Ford Coupe, Midnight Otto, Shift Kicker, Phaeton, Classic Cord, A-OK, Auburn 852, ’31 Doozie, Crooze Ozznberg, Fangula, Straight Pipes, Bone Shaker, ’29 Ford Pickup, Mod Rod, Phantastique, son solo algunos de los modelos basados en o inspirados por coches de esa era.
Y hoy estoy introduciendo dos modelos más que complementan esta lista: el Way 2 Fast y el ’34 Ford Sedan Delivery, ambos basados en carros creados por Ford en 1932 y 1934 (un Ford Sedán 2 Puertas de 1932 y un Ford Deluxe Custom Sedán de Envíos de 1934, respectivamente)...
Ambos visiblemente personalizados, pero el primero fue modificado extravagantemente hasta el hueso y con todo, hay un auto real, provisto con motores de supercargadores gemelos V8 HEMI, clasificados en 2.500 hp y vendido a finales de 2013 por Hemmings, que quizás estaba basado en esta pequeña bestia (Way 2 Fast)...
Los Hot Rods han sido uno de los focos principales de mi colección, puedes revisar este blog para encontrar más ejemplos de esta clase de coches, así que de vez en cuando introduzco publicaciones donde ellos son los protagonistas...
En el caso de Hot Wheels, estos Hot Rods han sido una de las principales razones de porque coleccionaba productos hechos por la marca del logo llameante, pero como mis visitantes regulares saben, ya no colecciono productos recientes de HW, desde 2018: son simplemente demasiado costosos para lo que ofrecen...
Conseguí todos los modelos incluidos en esta reseña a través del mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un par de amigos, colegas coleccionistas e importadores / vendedores privados, entre 2012 y 2016.
Ya que ambos modelos fueron notablemente personalizados, están de alguna manera en una línea borrosa entre carros de juguete licenciados externamente y conceptuales / de diseñador / de fantasía / originales / licenciados internamente, hechos por Hot Wheels, pero no tengo reparos acerca de eso.
El Way 2 Fast fue desarrollado por Bruce Baur, un ex-empleado de Mattel entre 1987 y 2002, también fue un diseñador de planta entre 1993 y 1997, puedes ver por su trabajo que ha sido fuertemente influenciado por la Cultura Custom (Kustom Kulture) y gente como Ed "Big Daddy" Roth y George Barris; mientras que el ’34 Ford Sedan Delivery fue diseñado por la leyenda Larry Wood, quien no necesita presentación y es la segunda versión de este modelo.
Conseguí 2 versiones del Way 2 Fast, una perteneciente a la Serie First Editions de 1997, parte de la Línea Principal (categoría Regular), el otro perteneciente a la Serie Street Show de 2007, una Exclusividad de Walmart y parte de la categoría Adulta (cuando los modelos de HW para esta cadena minorista eran realmente atractivos, con buena relación calidad-precio, no como hoy en día); mientras que el ’34 Ford Sedan Delivery pertenece a la Serie Pop Culture - Nostalgic Brands - Hanna-Barbera (Honk Kong Phooey) de 2012, parte de la categoría Adulta.
Todos estos modelos ofrecen carrocería y chasis en diecast, la dosis de diecast es en efecto apropiada, para variar y el nivel de detalle es sobresaliente para carros de juguete, particularmente en el Way 2 Fast, algo que no ves más en los productos actuales de Mattel.
Por eso es que es claro para mí, no de acuerdo con mi opinión, sino de acuerdo con la evidencia que puedes verificar a simple vista, que Hot Wheels fue grandiosa alguna vez: hoy en día, como coleccionista conocedor, realmente lo dudo...
Hay trabajos de pintura bonitos para los Way 2 Fast, complementados por decoraciones realmente buenas con tampos y/o calcomanías, que gritan "Hot Rod", una generosa dosis de cromado en los motores y los interiores, además, la versión Street Show recibió pintura negra con acabado brillante para el chasis.
Por otro lado, el ’34 Ford Sedan Delivery ofrece un trabajo de pintura agradable, complementado por una decoración deficiente en impresión digital de inyección de tinta...
El año 2012 marcó el inicio del declive para los productos de Hot Wheels en muchos aspectos, particularmente en los acabados y el control de calidad, lo cual en mi caso, me hizo finalmente quitarlos de mis preferencias con respecto a coches de juguete en diecast.
Hay interiores cromados para ambos Way 2 Fast, los cuales son parte del molde de los motores y la parrilla frontal, mientras interiores verde oliva fueron ofrecidos para el ’34 Ford Sedan Delivery, los cuales son parte del molde de los guardafangos frontales / traseros y los estribos laterales.
La selección de ruedas es variada, con ruedas plásticas presentando diseño de rimes 5 Spokes en cromado para la primera muestra del Way 2 Fast, ruedas multiparte Real Riders presentando diseño de rimes Street Show 5 Spokes en cromado (hechos exclusivamente para esta línea y nunca usados de nuevo), con llantas en caucho sintético labradas para la segunda muestra y ruedas multiparte Real Riders presentando diseño de rimes Dish (Moon Disc) en plateado, con llantas en caucho sintético labradas; fueron hechos en Malasia, China y Tailandia respectivamente...

And it’s no wonder, those are the famous (or infamous) Sweet 16, namely, the first products released by a brand of toy cars that would start a revolution in this segment: Hot Wheels, a revolution in which the playability and overall appearance were changed dramatically, regarding what was available in the market at that time, offering flashy colors, metallic finishes and super fast wheels...
But also it was a revolution in which marketing was heavily used to promote the brand, at a time when other manufacturers of toy cars were more focused on good value for money, than in marketing, Hot Wheels used it in order to generate a reputation that did not always correspond with reality: that latter factor has defined the brand more than anything else ever since...
Now, returning to the Sweet 16, you can find in this list some traits that became recurring topics for the brand of the flaming logo: Muscle Cars, Custom Culture, luxury American cars, concept cars, racing cars, designer cars and Hot Rods; maybe the only "dissonance" is a Beetle in the mix, but even in its case, the "American way of life" is present with its outrageous customization and hotrodesque style.
Nonetheless, what draws powerfully my attention in these Sweet 16 is the inclusion of a Custom Car based on a real-life Show Car, designed by Don Tognotti, called "King T" or "Tognotti’s T", which in turn was based on a Ford Model T Roadster from the second decade of the last century and I’m talking about the Hot Heap.

And today I’m introducing two more models that complement this list: the Way 2 Fast and the ’34 Ford Sedan Delivery, both based on cars created by Ford in 1932 and 1934 (a 1932 Ford 2-Door Sedan and a 1934 Ford Deluxe Custom Sedan Delivery, respectively)...
Both were visibly customized, but the first one was outrageously modified to the bone and yet, there is an actual car, provided with twin-supercharged V8 HEMI engines, rated at 2,500 hp and sold in late 2013 by Hemmings, that perhaps was based on this little beast (Way 2 Fast)...

In the case of Hot Wheels, these Hot Rods have been one of the main reasons why I collected products made by the brand of the flaming logo, but as my regular visitors know, I don’t collect anymore recent products by HW, since 2018: they are just too expensive for what they offer...
I got all the models included in this review through the secondary market, with a help of a pair of friends, fellow collectors and importers / private sellers, between 2012 and 2016.
Since both models were noticeably customized, they are somehow in a blurry line between externally licensed and concept / designer / fantasy / original / internally licensed toy cars made by Hot Wheels, but I have no qualms about that.
The Way 2 Fast was developed by Bruce Baur, a former employee at Mattel between 1987 and 2002, also he was an in-house designer between 1993 and 1997, you can see by his work that he has been strongly influenced by the Custom Culture (Kustom Kulture) and people like Ed "Big Daddy" Roth and George Barris; while the ’34 Ford Sedan Delivery was designed by the legend Larry Wood, who needs no introduction and it’s the second version of this model.
I got 2 versions of the Way 2 Fast, one belonging to the 1997 First Editions Series, part of the Mainline (Regular category), the other belonging to the 2007 Street Show Series, a Walmart Exclusive and part of the Adult category (when the models by HW for this retail chain were really appealing, with good value for money, not like nowadays); the ’34 Ford Sedan Delivery belongs to the 2012 Pop Culture - Nostalgic Brands - Hanna-Barbera (Honk Kong Phooey) Series, part of the Adult category.
All these models offer diecast body and chassis, the dose of diecast is indeed appropriate, for a change and the level of detail is outstanding for toy cars, particularly in the case of the Way 2 Fast, something you don’t see anymore in the current products by Mattel.
That’s why for me is clear, not according to my opinion, but according to evidence you can check naked eye, that Hot Wheels was once great, nowadays, as knowledgeable collector, I really doubt it...
There are nice paint jobs for the Way 2 Fast, complemented by really good decorations with tampos and/or decals, that scream "Hot Rod", a generous dose of chrome in the engines and the interiors, besides, the Street Show version received black paint with glossy finishing for the chassis.
On the other hand, the ’34 Ford Sedan Delivery offers a nice paint job, complemented by a subpar decoration in digital inkjet printing...
The year 2012 marked the beginning of decline for Hot Wheels products in many aspects, particularly in finishes and quality control, which in my case, made me finally drop them from my preferences regarding diecast toy cars.
There are chrome interiors for both Way 2 Fast, which are part of the mold of the engines and front grille, while olive green interiors were offered for the ’34 Ford Sedan Delivery, which are part of the mold of the front / rear fenders and side running boards.
The wheels selection is varied, with plastic wheels featuring 5 Spokes rims design in chrome for the first sample of the Way 2 Fast, multipart Real Riders wheels featuring Street Show 5 Spokes rims design in chrome (made exclusively for this line and never used again), with styled synthetic rubber tires for the second sample and multipart Real Riders wheels featuring Dish (Moon Disc) rims design in silver, with styled synthetic rubber tires; they were made in Malaysia, China and Thailand respectively...
